Hi

i usually post on the IBS boards as my Doctor seems to think that's what i have. I dont !

Again today i have been in bed all day as i was up for 3 hours during the night with diarroeah and bad stomach cramps. My anus is really sore now.

But why I am here is because I feel i may have Colitis. Im due to see my Gastro in January again and am going to demand some tests EG@ colonoscopy. Today after I had been to the toilet so many times there was nothing left in my stomach, except mucus, but this mucus had bright red blood in it, not loads but it was definetely there. This scared me a lot. Also when i wiped it had a tiny amount of bright red blood on the paper.

I have had so many test done over the past 2 years. Ultrasound of my organs EG liver, pancreas, kidneys, and uterus including ovaries. I have also had a HIDA gall bladder scan done too, all came back normal.

So what am i suffering from? I have almost constant diarreah with mucos but today there was blood and I'm scared sad(

It definitely sounds like colities.  Normally a colonoscopy will be able to determine if it's colitis or not.  A colonoscopy is not a big deal and you should insiste on it.  Ask the doc. to give you lots of sedation (intravenous valium or some such thing) so you feel no pain and wake up after an hour with no memory of the procedure.  A sigmoidoscopy may do the trick as well which requires no sedadation but doesn't go as far and you can stay awake and see the inside of your colon! (If you want).  You may see ulcerations which indicate ulcerative colitis.  Medication should then help.  Try to reduce stress in your life and try relaxation exercises - they helped me.

    Good luck!

Thank you. I cannot pin point when this all started. All i know is its getting worse by the week. Now blood ! that really scared me. I have had mucoousy bm's for a long while though and i tend to alternate between constipation and diarreah, mostly diarreah though. Does it wipe you out though? ive been in bed all day today and because im scared to eat, I feel wiped out. i have a stressful job and home life, does stress make it worse? thanks

First, don't be scared!  This can and will be controlled and you will get better.  I had my first attack when i was 25 and was brought on (I believe) by tremendous family stress.  I too had bloody diarrhea, that third year medical student friend diagnosed on the phone as colitis, soon confirmed by my family doctor.  I was hospitalized for a few weeks and recovered.  I can't remember what medication I was given but probaly prednisone.  I also started doing relaxation exercises.  I would lie down, close my eyes and go through the ritual of saying (and actually relaxing) "relax your toes", "relax your ankles" all the way to the top of my head.

I did this for a few weeks and also did everything possible to reduce stress in my life.  During the day I would examine my body and try to relax it if I found my stomach muscles tense, for example.

Now I don't know if this has anything to do with  it, or if I was simply lucky or had a mild form of the disease, but i basically remained colitis free for twenty-five years, got married, had children (I'm a man), held a job, travelled - in other words led a normal life.

This is why I tell you not to worry, try to reduce stresses in your life, but insiste that you get a colonoscopy to find out what's going on and then receive the proper medication. If you doctor won't do this for you, change doctors!

i think i have it in my head its something really bad. But i have had so many tests done i shouldnt really fear the worst.

i just wish next month would come so i can get a diagnosis because the people around me are starting to think its all in my head and i know it isnt.

In the meantime try cutting down on sugar, dairy and insoluble fibre (do a search on the internet) and try metamucil and other soluble fibre foods.  This may help reduce your diarrhea.

i mostly have pain and problems in my lower stomach, but is it usual to have a feeling of being raw and sore from my oeasophagus to my rectum? thats how i feel too.

I really don't know. I've rarely had abdominal pain.  You may want to go to emergency where they can perhaps get a GI doctor come and see you.  Or call your GI doc and ask the secretary to call you if they have a cancellation or perhaps ask if he can see yo sooner.

Oh Kim, you poor poor thing!!sad

I agree with other people here, it certainly isn't IBS. You don't bleed with it.

It is very scary with blood I know as I have had this. I was originally diagnosed just like you with IBS but my symptoms changed. Weight loss, being sick and feeling nauseous and going constantly on the loo plus blood which was bright red. Also getting up in the night and going and severe stomach pain.

Your symptoms sound like colitis and sound the same as mine. I know it's scary but it will be ok.

Keep a diary of your symptoms and when you bleed, how often you go, this will help your medical team. Also check out the Crohns and Colitis UK website, they are fab and have helped me loads. After 2 long years of feeling yuk in November this year I was finally diagnosed with colitis and am now on meds to try and calm it down.

I agree with gabe ask for lots of sedation and if you can gas which my hospital gave me it really helps. A colonoscopy is not so bad believe me I am the biggest wimp and I had no problems, the hospital staff were brilliant and put me at ease.

I hope this helps you, keep pressing for that all important diagnosis.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!!

Hi Kim,can't get to sleep because of worrying, waking in a sweat in the night, worrying as soon as your eyes are open worrying........ sound familiar? I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis nearly two years ago, after months of being told it was piles!!! I knew it was much more than that, and wasn't just the IBS that I have had on and off for years. I was exhausted ,had urgency, mucus, blood on poo and paper, bloating and horrid cramps. Eventually went private for colonoscopy because I was a wreck. Consultant horrified that I had suffered all this time being told it was piles. Put on Pentasa tablets and enema at night and felt a lot better within week or so,so please don't despair. Your symptoms do sound very much like colitis, but with meds it can be controlled! I do still get cramps and occasional blood on paper BUT again meds help loads with this. Do you take Immodium to help with diarrhoea ? And I find Solpedeine Max helps with the cramps also my GP gave me Dihydrocloverine for IBS pain. Sorry if I've rambled a tad but hope some of the above help. Please let us know how you get on,we all need to help each other on this site! Xxxx

I'm just scared about the blood yesterday it wasn't on poo it was like a ball of bloody mucous. Sorry for graphics.

I get stringy blood mucus from time to time too, scary I know but all part of UC,so don't worry xx

I'm not 100% sure it is UC until I get a colonoscopy hopefully in January. But my symptoms fit exactly. I am text book UC.

I have just eaten some poached egg and toast. I was hungry and felt weak from not eating for 24 hours.

It's good to hear from people suffering as it's interesting to know how you allive with it. Thank you.

    Hi Kim

Thank goodness for that!! Immodium is Loperamide. It is a good medicine to patch your system up while they diagnose. It helps slow trips in the loo quite so much. I had this as a temporary thing to tide me over while they got me sorted.

I have pain and problems at present in my lower tummy and have "red hot poker up the bottom" syndrome which has been a real pain. The bleeding should stop in time, mine has thanks to Mesalazine but the lower half is not behaving.

You do get completely wiped and I haven't eaten much today either due to being caught short. Fed up with raw hide so today phoned GP and said enough is enough. I am now trying Colifoam for my lower half and will let you know how this goes.

Kim are you on any supplements to help your weight? I am and they are a godsend as I can't eat big meals at all. Ensure Plus Juce (Juce is spelt this way) are a good snack if you feel yuk. Ask your GP.

Finally Kim don't let this beat you. Nobody wants to be chained to a loo and not be able to go out. You are inflammed in there somewhere it is just which bit and you need to sort this out so you can get treated and get better.
