Can Stomach Acid Cause Severe Pain WITHOUT Burning?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have been experiencing severe upper stomach pain after using Antibiotics (7 Days Amoxicillin, Clairythromycin). I developed severe pain on the 2nd or 3rd day of antibiotics use but continued to take it for 7 days upon doctors encouragement. I was dying everyday was in so much pain but still completed the course. Till this day after 6 months I am in pain it has not lessened. My endoscopy was clear and did not show any inflammation or abnormality. Docs thought it could be Pancreatitis but my tests so far did not show any pancreatitis (MRCP/MRI, Ultrasound, Bloodtest). Furthermore good members of this forum have told me that if it was Pancreatitis it wouldnt last this long (6 months) continuously without any period of relief.

My pain is in upper stomach and moves around upper left and upper middle stomach. Stomach feels sore and painful from inside. My pain feels like you get punched in your solar plexus or a severe cramp in your upper stomach. Painful to breath when pain is extreme.

So my question is can stomach acid cause severe pain and severe cramp like pain in upper stomach WITHOUT any burning? Does anyone have any experience with such pain?

Yes it can... but if endoscopt show no gastritis it would be more like gallbladder or pancrease infortunately....

Have you been teste for h pylori?

Hpylori was the cause doc prescribed me these powerful antibiotics that made my life hell. I did not have any hpylori symptoms and I regret every moment why I took antibiotics. Pain is unbearable and have left me living a life of a disabled person. None of the tests have shown any abnormality with any organ. I was a healthy and pain free person but this pain has now taken over my life. Endoscopy did not pick any inflammation. My theory is endoscopy only picks up areas which are red in color so if your stomach is not red anywhere its considered normal, but that I believe doesnt mean nothing is wrong with the stomach. I do not have any right side pain so it cant be gallbladder, although symptoms strongly suggest pancreas issue but none of the tests have shown it and I should have seen at least some relief if it was pancreatic inflammation because unless a person has advance disease or functional problem, pancreas pain settle at least for some time. Pain is unbearable like someone punches you in your upper stomach or a severe cramp. Intensity of pain changes throughout the day but I never had pain free day in these last 6 months.

Gallbladder doesnt necesarry show itself the pain when not working properly... just saying..its the symptoms around it....

Bur your case is pylori... you have to be retested and biopsy has to be sent away tp see what abs will work for you..and take tons of probiotics....

Personal tip: green tea + extra virgin olive oil.

my hplylori was detected by blood and breath test. After taking antibiotics all the pain started I did not have any hpylori symptoms I only took antibiotics because docs prescribed me those and also because I read hpylori can cause cancer. I have discussed this with docs and experts antibiotics cant make hpylori worse so if I did not have any symptoms before I shouldnt be having symptoms after antibiotics. Its the antibiotics that have done something, pain is only in the upper stomach and its severe I would die but never take antibiotics again. I have done endoscopy many months after the pain started and it did not show any inflammation at all so my hpylori wasnt active anyway thats why I was not having any symptoms but GOD knows what have these antibiotics done to me. 6 months is a long time and I am the kind of guy who recovers very quickly but this pain has not lessened in 6 months its like 1 step forward 3 step backward its just not leaving me. PPI dont help me but rather bloat my stomach.

Sorry to hear that...and i hope that you gonna crack this and recover quickly....

And antibiotics could have triger some condition that you had before waiting to meet you... aka hernia (sometimes hard to detect on endoscopy) that can cause your pain... but there is tons of options... for start try bland food..and create food diary...

      Again best of luck

Hi Human. In answer to your question, yes, you can you can have continual pain in your upper abdomen which in varying degrees. Anything that irritate your stomach like certain foods of medications can bring it on. I have had stomach problems since I was 25 and I am now 60. Over the last seven years I have been in bad pain everyday and in addition, sickness and nausea. Although I had a number of endoscopes and barium meals they showed no abnormalities, but I still continued to take the P.P.I.s  (acid stomach) last year I found out I had Gastritis and Doudenitis and I currently have a bad stomach ulcer. Which incidentally is my fourth. The issue is the endoscopy's are not always right. Go back to your Doctor and say that your not happy and you want a second opinion. If you do nothing it will only get worse. Watch what you are eating. Stay away from fried, greasy, hot, spicy foods. Plus limit alcohol intake. It sound as if  the acid is eating into the lining of the stomach and in time it may cause the illnesses that I have if not treated. You don't say how old you are. Don,t be afraid to speak up.

    Good luck.

I was always a healthy eater. Since my pain is severe I was not able to eat properly in these 6 months and lost a lot of weight more than 12 kgs. I am eating very light and bland diet but it is not helping me. Even if its stomach acid that is causing so much pain and cramp like feeling, I dont feel any burning which I am surprised because almost everyone gets burning feeling when stomach acid is playing any role. I dont know what it is but it is ruining my life. Even walking hurts and now from the last few weeks I have developed terrible back pain as well either because of malnutrition weight loss or because of some other reason I dont know but its now contributing to the pain. Docs simply dont have any answer they thought it was pancreatitis but it doesnt look like it. My endoscopy was pretty recent it didnt show anything. I have started to believe that there are many conditions that docs are unaware of so in my case I have to link dots myself. One of the doctors did once said that gastritis or acid causes pain but my pain is extreme and its pain only and I have no inflammation in my stomach or at least endoscoy didnt pick it. Mystery is the pain without burning, usually acid pain follows burning, but in my case there is no burning but severe upper stomach pain.

You can get silent acid reflux which can cause severe chest pain without burning.  I have had this.  Ask your doctor for a CT scan.

I did have MRCP (MRI) its used for almost same diagnosis but without contrast or radiation. They didnt find anything abnormal. If it was only chest pain maybe it would have been bearable but when I get the pain like someone punched me in my upper stomach or like a severe cramp in upper left or upper middle stomach, it becomes unbearable and my mind starts to wonder whether its even acid related or not.

Antibiotics can disturb gut flora; have you discussed this possibility with your doctor? Have you tried probitotics?

Hi Human. I have have have ah varying degrees of pain from severe to feeling bruised with my conditions all my life, but never a burning sensation. The pain is like a wide band going right around to my back. I can't carry shopping as it kills bend over and stand for long, When you touch it it feels bruised.I am a qualified Herbal Practitioner, and I am also studying medicine at the moment. Have you done any research  on the digestive system and the the condition that over secretion or under secretion of acid can cause. Also the role of Probiotics (friendly Bacteria depletion). It's well worth a read. Hope you can find some peace.

Susan can I ask what triggered your condition? and have you checked yourself for Pancreatitis? My pain is only on upper stomach and yes the pain is now connected to back as well and it does seem like band of pain covering upper stomach and back.

Yup have taken probiotics. It helped with the bloating that happened when the pain first started but has not helped with the pain or the cramp like feeling.

Your condition is a real mystery!  Maybe keeping drinking milk to try and soothe your stomach.  You may need to drink it frequently to get a benefit.

Yes it really is because nothing is working at the moment thats why I am worried. I have not taken any pain medicines though, neither do I plan to. Because the pain is not a muscular pain but rather a severe upper stomach cramp. I have started drinking milk everyday it does help slightly but the severe upper cramp kills me whenever it happens. Pain intensity changes throughout the day.

My condition is mostly genetic. My mother has suffered from stomach ulcers and hiatas hernias all her life and she is now 91. She had it in her twenties the same as me. I have had every test going. I had a cat scan for the third time in seven years and I definitely don't have pancreatitis.I have had at least 7 Endoscopies , 2 barium meals, normal scan. etc. My pain is only in the upper stomach and at the moment it feels like a big rat is gnawing away in there.I feel sick for hours every day and I have had all of the types of sickness tablets going and they don't work.Due to the Nissan op I can't ever be sick again. My system only goes one way. Neither does Gaviscon as Bicarbonate of soda. The only thing that's brings some relief is crystallized ginger. I had and operation on my stomach valve at the  called Nissans Fundoplication, and am just about to have another called a Partial Gastrectomy, where they remove the bottom half of my stomach as the medications don't work.

Probiotics won't do anything for this condition, but the lack of it can cause abdominal disorders because then theirs more bad bacteria than good bacteria.

Yes it does, But the pain comes from no where and sometimes feels like a mechanical pain which is giving upper stomach cramps.
