Can you still have a uti even if culture came back negative.

Hello,
So basically I've been suffering with bv, yeast infections and Uti's. I've had 3 different antibiotics for bv, and 2 for Uti's. During my last rounds of test everything came back negative, but the problem Is I still have symptoms. It burns when I pee and it smells bad. No frequency. But sometimes when I go pee only a little comes out and the pee is cloudy. My urologist wants to talk about the possibility Of having interstitial cystitis.i rather not have that because there is no cure. I also don't feel like I have that, but maybe I'm just in denial. My question is could I still have a uti even if the the cultures I got were negative? Could it maybe be a small uti? Is it possible. I just need hope I really don't want the other thing.

I'm 65 and have had constant urinating just past week. Went to dr who dip stick urine was negative and sent out for urine culture. I drink about 6 bottles of water a day but it is a different feeling. Feel a lot of pressure but no pain, burning, blood or foul smell. She said I could have a start of bacterial infection which would show up in culture and not in office. Only had this this past week. Us this nirmslbto be negative and positive in culture as I get up 3/4 times a nite to urinate 2 hrs apart. Thanks

From what my urologist told me is if the urinalysis is negative then there is no infection. Mine even ordered a microscopic urinalysis to be sure and it was negative......if there was ever bacteria that grew he said it was contaminated. Every doctor is different......of course.....but I would say if the culture comes back with something, your doctor may prescribe something, but don't be surprised if you feel no difference. If it comes back clear then I would ask for a pelvic ultra sound it can look at everything in the pelvis that could be pressing on the bladder. Also if you are constipated it can cause over active bladder feeling.

the reason they are misdiagnosing it is because they are rubbish doctors, except the one who replied that the doctor said it was because of low becteria levels. BV, bacterial vaginosis or gardnerella is invisible to urine testing. I had symptons, ranging from pain in the urinary area, to vomiting and diarrhea for 5 years, in the other comment they are complaining about it being criminal because they missed it for 4 months,i think in my case they deserve to loose their medical license. All bacteria tests came back negative, they accused it of being in my head due to stress, which is then i decided to but a 15 minute veneris 3 in 1 test candida, gardnerella and trichomas, The test revealed i had gardnerella vaginalis and i believe that i've had it for 4 years now , and initially they refused to test for bacteria believing that my vomiting and diarrhea was just a viral infection, that i was getting nearly all the time. They even said my daughters had a viral infection, even though the infection never seemed to go away. My children went to an alternate doctor in Spain who actually tested them and found out it was an infection. They blamed me for my daughter having a UTI even though my doctor misdiagnosed the infection as being viral. If you want to avoid my predicament, then learn to do urine testing yourself at home through youtube, which is what i did and purchase the 3 in one veneris test, and i found out my doctor got it wrong.

Caulodren Your post is so on the level to my thoughts re over twenty doctors I have had 'looking after me'......... I don't know if you saw my post about a specially qualified nurse who evaluates in A&E....
She said my dad had a catheter in for 3 months that he did not need !!!!! She said please don't get me going re Urologists! She was astounded that several doctors and Urologists think that a male cannot pass
bacteria onto his female wife/partner...... she said how do you get an STI then...... The doctors I have been seeing seem very short on cocum because they have not looked at my previous medical history
which seems nuts to me.... Although a long time ago when I was diving the notes state clearly attached to my chest xray = calcifications on both lung fields confirm a previous tubercular infection....
I think prison should be the outcome for negligence but it's a waste of time trying unless you have plenty of money.......... mmmmmmm

Hi all, I don't usually get I get involved forums but this issue is now close to me. I have been suffering with UTi symptoms for about a month with two unsuccessful rounds of antibiotics.
I've done a huge amount of research and seen a urologist in London. He gave me useful info on natural supplements you can take to resolve this, potentially. The such as interphase plus (attacks bad bacterial biofilm), monolaurin to help
Kill the bacteria the is not e-coli. D-mannose good for flushing out e-coli. Quercitin for inflammation.
Basically the symptoms could be and are likely caused by bacteria that have become resisitent to antibiotics over time. They are good at evolving quickly and adapting. This is why so many women are suffering like this. Also, infections not treated quickly with strong antibiotics are likely to form bio-films. They remain undetected in urine samples. Sometimes you will
Have high white and epithilial cell count indicating infection and sometimes you won't when bacteria formed biofilms and remain undetected but can still can intermittent or constant symptoms.
Apparently urine broth cultures and DNA testing by some specialist clinics can detect the bacteria but biofilms still difficult.
My current solution which is starting to help is using the natur supplements ie biofilm protocol to try to get rid of it and taking very strong probiotic and prebiotic plus l-glutamine to help bladder and stomach lining. And Quercitine complex to help
With inflammation. Apparently this regime may need to go on for around 1-3 months depending on when symptoms subside.
Let's see. Urologists are quick to label IC but har often means that they can't find what the cause is. I don't very much that the majority of women with symptoms but undetected bacteria have an autoimmune disease making bladder repair impossible. That is rare!!
Don't give up hope
Ladies and do some proper and thorough research into natural medicine and biofilms. There are a number reports of women 'healing IC' in this way. I doubt they had IC!!
I hope that this all makes sense and can help some of you.
On a final note I do ageee that antibiotics are not good for the bladder in long term and can actually encourage the formation of biofilms. They need to be taken for adequate time too if they are taken.
I have taken two and they only helped for a few days then symptoms return. Another indicator of biofilm.
I have also found Accupuncture helpful.
Best of luck and hang in there.

The answer to that question must be a resounding yes but are the doctors taking the correct samples to test ?
Secondly there are infections that can 'hide' in tissue. That must be the case when an eminent Urologist in the
USA stated that some tissue harbors bacteria can be/is 'walled off'. That situation caused by the bodies immune reaction to infections and this makes one wonder whether all bodies are the same? Unfortunately
no we are not all the same.
The research is ongoing with every aspect of health & urinary problems are rife in every generation but are the problems re antibiotics caused by too short a course of those drugs? Even right this minute some practitioners are saying three days is enough for the ladies and some are disagreeing that the short courses are not long enough for complete eradication of the infective organisms.......RIGHT ON....
Believe it or not several so called experts 'think' that bacterias cannot be passed from a man to his wife or partner????????? A cleaver special nurse agrees with me when she says = well how do you get STI then? Is it any wonder in Urology the mirriad problems that those suffering from these disabling problems
seem to feel they have absolutely now where to turn?

Hi sorry to hear you've been suffering. I finally saw someone at the hospital who agreed that sometimes results show negative I still have a uti I am now on nitrofurotoin as and when needed. I always take one before intercourse and then again next day and if I feel symptoms coming on I take them again. This has actually kept my infections at bay and made my life a lot easier. Consultant said some women have to stay like this forever I being one of them. It's not good to keep taking antibiotics I know but tbh it's better than suffering. Good luck I hope you find someone understanding who will treat you like they have me x

My urologist just prescribed Methenamine which I am told will prevent bacterial infections. I just started them last night so it is too soon to say if it will work, but I am PRAYING. I am physically and emotionally exhausted. I miss going places its so very depressing. I just want my life back, I would do anything to be where I was a few months ago. My Dr wanted to put me on long term antibiotics but I am so resistant to them from being on so many he didnt recommend it. Hope all is well :-)

Hi Sassy
I'm pleased you have been given something to try fingers crossed it works for you. I know what you mean about getting your life back some people just don't realise how bad it is. I still suffer with thrush and BV which is awful and no cure apart from using creams/pessaries but I'm lucky I have an understanding boyfriend otherwise I think I would now be single forever it still gets me down though knowing this is what I now have to do for rest of my life but it's no different from a diabetic etc having to take meds I'm just glad I have been given stuff to try.
Let me know how it goes. Do you take this daily? I've never heard of it
Take care good luck xx

Your urologist must be one in a million or much more. If I mention have you heard of a certain tabley they all grab the Mimms or the other 'bible'! A few people recently have noted that quite a few practitioners have looked at google to see if it enlightens them what to do!
I have a disconcerting letter ( to me anyway) written by one of our 'mature' lady GP's in which the first line says "Dear Doctor please can you advise re this difficult case."
Oh my.......... and I am relying on her and put a lot of trust in her but I ask myself is that trust misplaced?

The Methenamine absolutely took my kidney pain away within 24-48 hours, however, it did not stop the frequency. Tomorrow I am having the Interstim put in for the two week trial. I am SCARED TO DEATH, but willing to try anything at this point. i was going to do the botox injections, but I was too scared that I would need to self catheterize. I will keep you posted and hope you are doing well :-) Karol
