Carbimazole - weight gain

I have so struggled with weight gain since taking Carbimazole. I have been taking it for 18 months now and despite being quite fit and constant daily exercise, I am not losing it and struggling to keep my weight down.I am a size 10 to 12 but recently found that I was moving to just the size 12 and had to revamp my wardrobe with baggy clothes. I am so depressed about my weight and when I mention it to my consultant, his professional opinion is \"its to do with the amount of daily calories I am having\". I have just come across this forum and am so grateful to see that it is not just me and that there are real people out there with the same concerns that I am experiencing.

I asked my Endo yesterday if I could come off Carbimazole and Thyroxine early, instead of the expected end date of next June and he suggested not to, as I have a mild form of thyroid eye disease as well as graves and coming off medication could make my eyes worse.
So I'm sticking to putting up with the weight gain of nearly 2 stone and trying to get on with things the best I can. I eat heathily and exercise every day, if not out nordic walking, I'm at home on my cross trainer.
You will get through this like the rest of us, weight gain or come off Carbimazole and symptoms back - for me it was an easy call.
I'm not much help I'm afraid with a solution to the weight gain, but to let you know you're not on your own there must be hundreds of us in the same situation and we're all here to support each other.

I wouldn't advise coming off them all together. I remember how the weight gain did get me down and no matter how much I tried to lose it nothing worked. I resorted to baggier clothes which helped me to cope with my weight gain, as I resorted to the fact that I wasn't going to lose it whilst on the Carbimazole.
I am in remission for the second time now and despite not being on Carbimazole I am strugglilng with my weight despite going to the gym on a regular basis.
Keep on a dose and try and beat this. Worry about the weight later once you are back to normal.
Good luck.xxx

Hi naz. I have gained weight dramaticly since taking carbimazole 5 months ago because of graves disease. I am now putting on 2/3 pound's a week every week. I have decided to STOP taking carbimazole altogether as from today. I was on 15mg then 10mg then recently just 5mg a,day. Still gaining weight weekly. Miserable is an understatement. I am going to try buggleweed herbal now. See what happens.

Hi Millie89504
I can so relate to everything you have said. I remember writing my first thread on here. I had never even entered a forum before. I was so depressed about my weight gain. It was however reassuring that it wasn't just me and that it was the effects of the Carbimazole, whereby my consultant was just shrugging me off.
After years of struggling with this, and several spates if it going into remission it had come back. I refused for months to go back on the Carbimazole because of the weight gain. But with family pressures constantly persuading me to go back on the medication I have gone back on it. I have refused to go back to my consultant as all he says is remove it. I'm not willing to do that unless I really have to. I have just asked my GP to perscribe me 5mg which I have been on for a month. I know it's not right to stop medication but I would not go on it too for months in fear of the weight gain. I'm currently on the 5mg and thankfully at the moment it hasn't affected my weight.
Please update me on the buggleweed, I'm going to get some of that too.
Know that you are not on your own but I just came to terms with that if I am gaining weight it's not my fault and it.was out of.my control.
Remember beauty isn't always about weight. I know how depressing it becomes but try to work.with it and not against it. Good luck.x

Hi Karmaway
Wow. You're exactly the same as me. Feel like crap, extremely fatigued but for the time being refuse to go on a higher dosage in fear of weight gain. I'm definitely going to try the buggleweed though.

Hi
I know it's been a whole since you posted this but wanted to know how you got on, did you stop the carbimazole?
I'm feeling fed up too and was thinking of stopping it, but then I don't want my symptoms to get worse.
Ive been on it 3 weeks, will exercise and a healthy diet not help? Or am I just fooling myself here?
