Carbimazole - weight gain

I have so struggled with weight gain since taking Carbimazole. I have been taking it for 18 months now and despite being quite fit and constant daily exercise, I am not losing it and struggling to keep my weight down.I am a size 10 to 12 but recently found that I was moving to just the size 12 and had to revamp my wardrobe with baggy clothes. I am so depressed about my weight and when I mention it to my consultant, his professional opinion is \"its to do with the amount of daily calories I am having\". I have just come across this forum and am so grateful to see that it is not just me and that there are real people out there with the same concerns that I am experiencing.

Yep, me I have gained 15kg and I am struggling more so to lose it. It's sooo hard and I want my size back. I hate taking these pills and make me moody if I don't take them. Every day is premenstrual day if I fail to take them. I hate drugs.

Hello. I feel so reassured hearing your stories, that I am not crazy or an attention seeker, I have a serious illness! after 2 lots of treatments of Carbimazole over 2 years, my Graves Disease is returned. it is well controlled with Carbimazole but it's a poisonous substance I don't want to rely on forever. And it wasn't an option from my Endocrinologist doctor. I have done soooo much reading about this subject, I now feel ready to have RAI treatment.Graves has taken enough of my life from me. i have put on weight on Carbiz, & a few 'friends' have enjoyed telling me if my thyroid was overactive I should be as thin as a rake! It seems to make a big difference if you are treated by the specialist rather than a GP. After RAI I will continue to be monitored by the specialist to get thyroid levels right on Thyroxine. When they get my level to where it needs to be, I'm hoping to lose weight as my body should revert to its usual patterns & rate of metabolism etc. I will also feel fit to do exercise. Although Carbiz allows me to perform at work (better than without it), I have little energy left for anything else. Thyroxine is an exact replica of thyroid hormones made by the body, so not dangerous. Whereas living with Graves is. Hope my optimism pays off! wish me luck. Alice in Wonderland if you see this, I would live to know how you got on.

I have had graves disease on/off for a long time now and I feel that whilst it is a physical condition it is linked closely to emotions. i had been in remission for some time when i went into dispute with employer about pay. I won my dispute but my thyroxine levels soared. This is not my only example of anger induced relapse. We all suppress negative feelings towards others because we cant afford to be honest & fired. I read an interesting article last year about how this disrupts a number of hormones. Im now back in remission, carbimazole free & trying to manage stress. I run in green spaces each morning to manage well being but trying to avoid irritation..... Last month I was chased in the park three times in one week by the same dogs & as teeth clonked against my elbow the stupid woman stood shouting about along the lines of "don't worry it's ok." Hence violent thoughts. I don't have any tips on maintaining inner calm but I do feel that emotional well being is key to recovery. Running helps me & helped me to lose the weight I gained in the medication. I hope you feel better soon. try & think about which people cause you torment & avoid them if you can.
