I had both eyes done in the pass 7 weeks,my left eye has a black rim /shadow in the corner, similar to an eclipse of the moon and I get flashes. From what I have read in other posts,is that the original (natural lens) were bigger than the ones they replace it with, which causes this effect. And they say it will got away with time once the brain adjust to the smaller lens.I just hope that this is correct, because this black shadow is very annoying.

Same here I have the same thing going on and you were told verbatim what I was told and I like you hope it's true.

      Hi

After reading about our natural lens versus the new implant lens being smaller than our natural lens in a previous post, where they said the smaller lens was the reason for this shadow/black rim.

If that's the case why did I not have the black/shadow rim in my right eye ,they are both the same lens? Now I am curious if this information is misleading and will ever it go away with time or something I have to live with for the rest of my life.

The surgeon says the brain takes time to absorb these changes and its different for each person but of course they tell you this AFTER the surgery never before, otherwise no one would have surgery

I had this cresent dark shadow for one year already its not going away but im getting used to it already.

I read articles that say that your brain will adapt to it and the shadow will be gone after 3 months. Its not true.

But what else can you do. Just live with it .

I had the same but it did go away completely after a couple of months.

So true Peter ,what else can one do ,but live with it,whether it's annoying or not, I would like to have known that this could happen prior to my surgery. Then I might have had second thoughts on whether to go through with the surgery.

      Freeman,

re the shadow, just dont think too much about it.

If you have 20/20 distance vision after the surgery, that's already a blessing. Reading all the posts in this forum, some people had complications or less than 20/20 after the surgery.

Right now, I just hope pco will not develop, my vision stays at 20/20 , no retina issues, and my other eye (that still have the cataract, no surgery yet) can still last for a few years before a surgery is really needed.

      God bless.

Blindness is really scary and having good vision is really a blessing.

I cant imagine how blind people live their life without depression.

Peter I don't have 20/20 vision,I am scheduled to have laser treatment to clear up the right eye lens and is a little concerned whether this will result in more problems.According to another post on here a gentleman had the back of his lens cleaned by laser(YAG treatment) and the results were only a 25% improvement, but the treatment caused floaters which he found to be more irritating/annoying,makes wonder if I should go ahead with this treatment,Has for the black shadow/rim in the corner of my left eye,it hasn't improved since my surgery 9 weeks ago ,which the surgeon said would go away within 4 months. You think I would have seen some improvements by now.

Like you say, blindness is very scary,it would be very hard to deal with, and like you said surely Blind people must go through a stage of depression having to deal with being blind.

      Thanks for the encouragement

I had one done in January and another in March. I could read better straight away and have not worn glasses since. BUT - feel as though I am looking through binoculars. My eyes feel sore and swollen as though I cannot open them properly. Consequently, feel tired as my eyes feel heavy. Would never have had them done if I had been aware of the problems.

So sorry you are also having the same problems, I thought it was me being impatient. I worked in a hospital and when the patients said they were going to have it done they were full of joy. I never had one that came back and said it was a problem.

?Have written to the eye hospital in Hull and asked if there is a solution. don't really want any more intervention as it could cause more problems.

It is a very difficult things to come to terms with as it is vision and you cannot avoid it.

Hope someone else has improved after this problem.

Me as well, like looking through binoculars,it's very annoying, seeing the black rim/shadow in the corner of the eye.

Judging by the posts on here it is a common problem but it is never mentioned when the initial assessment is done. Would probably have gone ahead anyway as you assume they would have told you. I was not aware I needed the operation, but as I am diabetic I thought they must know what to do. It was the optician who referred me to the hospital, and I was surprised when he did. Without the knowledge we cannot question the experts but the more I see on this site the more I will ask when I go for my appointment. don't think I will risk any more intervention if it is offered.

Will post the results of my appointment when I have been.

Unfortunately for me the dry burning eyes and feeling like I'm looking through binoculars are not my biggest concern, the double vision and blurriness resulting from the cloudy membranes which are left behind so the lenses can be affixed when the cataracts are removed, that's my biggest concern because I can no longer read.
