I have had the black shadow at the outside corner of my left eye. The only one done so far, but I am due to have the other eye done before long. My surgeon has said that he will place in a different lens, which is larger, to try to avoid the effect on the other eye.

I have had the effect for about 1 1/2 years. I kept being told that it would go away, but it didn't so I kept on going back. In the end I searched the web for professional information, and concluded it was Negative dysphotopsia. It was months later that I was told that it was that, though it did not help! About 1.5% of people get this and it does not go away. It is very irritating and I feel that if I had known, I may have known what it was and worried less about it, having the expectancy of it going.

Hi Dennis, sorry to hear you are are have the same annoying experiences as I am.My surgeon said it would go away in 4 months.Eight weeks have passed with no improvement ,he didn't tell me it was "Negative Dysphotopsia",I assume he didn't position the lens correctly, because I didn't have this problem with my right eye that developed a cloudiness on the back of the lens, which causes blurriness.

You think they would be more up front with the patent, instead of misleading them to think it will go away ,which it doesn't from your experience.

I go back next month to have the laser treatment to clean up the cloudiness on my right eye lens, hopefully it doesn't causes this black effect on the right eye.You mentioned that the surgeon said a larger lens should correct the black shadow effect.Once you have it done ,please post your results on whether it did solve the problem. If it does, hopefully I can get the same thing done.Take care and have a great day.

Hi Freeman62151 - just wanted to caution you about the laser (YAG treatment) to clear up the cloudiness on the capsule behind the lens (for PCO).   If you are contemplating a lens exchange you shouldn’t have that procedure as it removes the capsular bag and although it will clear the cloudiness without the capsular bag in tact it makes a lens exchange more difficult if not impossible.  Requires a more skilled surgeon.

Yes - the YAG procedure should only be done if there is definite PCO clouding of the capsule behind the lens.  When I got a new refraction last weekend at an optometrist, I mentioned I wondered if I might be starting to get early PCO. But he told me it wouldn't get blurry/cloudy one day and clear the next and he looked closely in my eye and could tell the capsule was clear.

So that means my vision variations day to day is probably just the cornea astigmatism varying most likely due to dry eye. Fortunately most days I'm getting 20/25 or better, maybe one day a month where its worse like 20/30-20/40.

Hi Sue.An I am getting laser (YAG treatment) on my right eye,the surgeon said their is cloudiness on the back of the lens. However I think the left eye lens will have to be replaced in the future,to correct the black shadow/rim in the corner of my eye, which I don't think will go away on it's own.One gentleman here posted that he has had the black shadow/rim for 1 1/2 years and was told it was  "Negative Dysopoptosia " and will be getting a larger lens, which should correct the problem. So you say it removes the capsular bag in the YAG treatment, and a lens would be harder to replace, then I should be OK to go ahead with the treatment or should just live with the blurriness for fear of more complications,I don't have any other issues with my right eye except for the cloudiness.

I haven’t looked up sizing and IOLs but I think most are a standard size of 6mm - a few are smaller at 5mm.

I did read that the ones with a square edge can cause more issues with edge glare and unwanted images like you are experiencing with seeing a rim vs the IOLs with round edges.   However the square edge ones do a better job of preventing PCO than the round edge ones.

I thought I had problems but not after reading your comments. So sorry you have all of those issues.

?I have just cancelled an appointment for Tuesday 29th May as I feel from all the things people have contributed  it is an ongoing problem without a solution. I had no intention of any more intervention whatever they offered me, just wanted to make the point that patients are not being informed enough. did not want to waste the appointment as there are so many people waiting for treatment.

?After support from this site I am just going to try to cope with the 'binocular effect' as it does not sound to be the worst thing that could happen. Would definitely not have had any more operations.

?Thanks to all that contribute and hope everyone finds some kind of improvement. Will follow the blog with interest.
