Celebrating one year....

Thank you to everyone for being so supportive - one year today I was having my THP and could not have got through it without you all! One year on - feeling very happy with the result.

Big hugs to Renee and Rocket especially and so many others too - together we have made such a difference. I am just going to ride a horse now can you believe! And have a lunch planned later with friends - somehow feels more of a milestone and a celebration than a birthday even. Love and light to all of you, wherever you are in the world and whatever the stage you are in - we must thank the inventors of the internet for bringing us all together to share our experiences and provide support in the darkest of hours.

Thank you for being there for me - with a slight lump in the throat. I wouldn't be here without you.

I am glad to know at one year you are so happy. I am 15 weeks post THR and a repair of my Gluteous Minimus tendon. I went to the Dr yesterday and was hoping I could stay running my dogs in agility trials but he said no. I am to do no running and no trials and to see him in 6 weeks. This is very frustrating for me I thought I would be competing much sooner. Hopefully in the future things will be better.

Don't feel disheartened, it is better to wait and be completely better than to rush back to things and for the surgery to go wrong...you have come so far. Is the dr saying no more running ever? Or no more running for now?

To be honest, I don't run  but I can run, I do most other sports - but I don't run like I used to, as I am quite young and want the hip to last....otherwise I could be looking at three or four revisions just in one hip (I need the other one done as well at some point) Is there a reason why you couldn't run a little in the future? Most poeple tend to go back to normal activities in time, and that time can vary a lot it has to be said...15 weeks is still early days really - although we run out of patience by then usually....I did anyway...but we get past it. I hope you will be posting in one year and doing lots of wonderful things with your dogs.

The Dr said I have to wait to run it is to soon. I am walking well but am feeling some discomfort on the outside of my knee and in my quads. I think it is muscle weakness. I just really thought i would be back to normal sooner. I think Posterior takes much longer and the complication of the tendon tear. I am trying to be patient. I can still train my dogs but walking.

There are so many ups and downs, and sometimes I used to wonder if I would ever be better...but we get there...slowly and surely day by day. It is a LONG recovery that is for sure!

This is so lovely to hear. You are doing so well. Only 5 weeks in and walking normally still seems such a long time off.

    Really pleased for you.

Love this site too and all the support as at times you feel quite alone with nowhere to turn for your queries.

    Well done xx

Thanks Kim - you know this forum is an absolute wonder - supports everyone and is completely genuine - we can all share our worries together.

5 weeks is very early days, but time passes, and step by step you will feel so much better. Do you have a physio?

I am new on this site. Did you have bumps in the road with your recovery. I sure am and feeling very discouraged at 7 months.

I had heaps of bumps - it is not an easy ride that is for sure. Why are you feeling discouraged Tracey? Are you still in pain? Are you worried about something?

I was fragile at seven months still...I am still careful now, but not as much, it takes a year to be completely better - and from experience this is absolutely true.

Hi Rose, So I was painful all along and at 3 months developed a flexor tendinitis that has debilitated my with groin pain. I have been back on a cane since sept. I had my sx in may. I recently saw 2 specialists in boston to confirm that my implant is ok and just got a steroid injection into my flexor tendon 2 days ago to try to calm down the inflammation. Too early yet for it to kick in. I am/was an athlete. Jogged beach everyday with my dog. Can barely walk her now. Tennis and yoga every week. I am so tired of being in pain and worried that I am never going to get through this. I've been committed to my PT though it has been very gentle since this tendinitis. Everyone else comes in with their hip surgeries and 6 weeks later ane pain free and elated. I just watch them come and go. I was very fir before surgery and thought I would sail through it all. Has been thhe total opposite and I am so discouraged.

So sorry to hear all of that, Tracy. Those soft tissue injuries can be so debilitating and painful. And there are so many places where those injuries can occur in our hips and legs! I've spent the last 14 months post THR with gluteal tendon tears, unable to walk without a bad limp and pain. Recently I had surgical repair for the tears, and I hope I am on the road to recovery.

Hope your tendinitis gets better. If conservative measures don't work over time, then perhaps you'll need some surgical repair, too. You may need a second opinion from an orthopedist not connected with your original surgeon. I had to go elsewhere for my soft tissue diagnoisis, as my OS didn't have a clue what was wrong with me. My OS saw the results of the MRI I insisted on, and he couldn't see the tears. But the new surgeon that I found saw the tears on the MARS MRI that he ordered. I had to be very persistent.

Tracey as an athlete I can really understand how this surgery would have had a bad effect on you, it has taken away many things you love to do, and any kind of pain is incredibly wearing after a while.

I hope the injection works for you. If you are just 3 months post op - is that right? This is still very very early days, I was not doing anything much at that stage. Those that bounce back at six weeks are incredibly rare, I don't know anyone at all who bounced back at six weeks....I was still on crutches at that stage.

You seem to have a good dr and a physio, and I think what you need most is time, you need to take your time...I have so many days at rock bottom even not so long ago, wondering if I would ever be better. The recovery is not a straight line, and you go up and down all the way through.

Do you have some emotional support Tracey? You sound like you need a big hug (sending one virtually) and some comfort that you WILL come through this, you know this is nothing wrong with your hip - it has been checked, the rest is probably muscles and I am afraid they do tend to take longer to recover. Stay on the forum for support Tracey, there will be so many that feel just the same as you. You will come through this - and we are all here to help.

Annie that is such great advice, quite possibly it does need a proper repair Tracy.

How are you doing now Annie? Are you getting better? Hope so lovely!

Thanks Rose.  I live alone and am single so my emotional support is not as strong. I am 7 months post op. I am almost 1 week post steroid injection and it has has minimal effect. Did you have soft tissue injuries along the way?

I'm doing ok, 5 1/2 weeks out from surgery. Will be taking the brace off on Thursday, allowed to full weight-bear then, too. Will start PT the next day. Soon I'll know if I'll be able to walk normally without pain again!
