Hi Alan,
I got myself a used electric recliner for my recovery and it was a god send. Otherwise people use those straight backed chairs with wooden arms and legs (sometimes need leg height lifts on them). Try looking on sites like ebay, Nextdoor or schpock to see if anyone is selling something suitable locally - that's what I did.

Hi Alan, after my hip replacement I used an office chair purchased on the internet for about £80.00. Fully adjustable in just about all directions. And it was on wheels so I could move it between rooms while leaning on it as a sort of crutch.

hi
technically you shouldnt use an office chair if it swivels.
measure the length of your lower leg when sitting on a hard chair. The seat should, according to the physios, be no lower than that. I found hard kitchen chairs with arms quite uncomfortable as the sides dig in ( I am average sized). Luckily we had a perfect chair. you just need to find one before you go in

if you are in the uk, some Trusts provide a suitable chair for your recovery - mine didnt but there are some here where they did. Maybe ask if you dont have anything suitable?

This will be a mine field and what was good for one may not be good for another . You don't particularly need anything other than something comfortable and you may just need to sit on cushions on your own suite. It will also depend on your fitness before and grit and determination . There are differing trains of thought though. If you use aids to get up and down ie the lift chairs then you are not using the muscles to get up and down for longer . I just persevered with what I had and got through no problem . Don't over think it .

one that it high enough to allow you hips to be right angle. your hips should be level with knees with your feet placed flat on the floor. you hips should never drop lower than you knees when sitting, most of us slump on cosy sofa /chair.
a chair like they use in hospital, there are loads to choose from but its the most important thing to invest in. you will be resting in it quit a lot.

I am 3 weeks post op. I had hibrid hip procedure...using some cement. I guess it's because of the cement...my dr. gave me no restrictions....I got up from low furniture on day one. But I'm guessing a recliner is the best way to go...the arms of which make it easy to push yourself up.

if you have a pre-op then the hospital should measure your legs and tell you what the minimum height is that you need. you can build up a seat with hard foam or similar if your suite isn't high enough. but you do need to keep your knees at or below the level of your hips, at least for a few weeks.

Hi Alan,
I had low sofa and chairs as well and couldnt get out if them so i bought a riser chair which has been so useful. You could also use a high backed sturdy chair like a dining room table chair. I didnt have a full hip replacement i had pinning but my brother had his full hip replaced and used a riser as well.

Hi Alan1954,
I've had 2 hip replacements. I can't really answer your question. I sat in what I have. I would imagine the answer to your question would depend on your height? I did add a lift to my toilet seat which was very helpful. You can get it with or without arms.
If you do a Google Search: "What kind of chair is best after hip surgery" I'm sure you will find the answer you are looking for and even some information you didn't know you needed.
Good luck.

ask the occupational therapist that's assigned to you to organise equipment for you, they'll have someone come around to raise your sofa etc, raised toilet seat and so on.

Hi Alan, if you're in the UK you should get given stuff. I was given a perching chair which was handy, I sat at the table a lot and read. A company came with loo seats and they raised up our sofa and also our bed. Check at your pre op, all the best, Judith

Depends on the NHS Trust policy. I got some crutches and a raised loo seat, and that was it. I had to buy anything else myself.

Hi Judith, I was in the same position as Martin, a company gave me raised loo seats after my pre op and that was it. I then was given crutches leaving hospital and a bit of material to lift my leg into bed. They did offer grabbers etc but they charged for them at a price! No help with perching chairs or with raising anything.
