I sat on a pillow on the settee Alan. Did you not have to measure the height of your toilet, chair/settee and bed so the physios could check they were okay, if not they supply items for your recovery.

I too have a low soft couch and it was painful to sit on and impossible to get out of. Getting up I would need to bend myself over the 90 degrees and risk dislocation. It's important to have one with arms so you have something to balance and keep you straight getting up.

What I did was move one of my mesh lawn chairs, light and straight but comfortable sitting, and put it in front of the TV where I could reach the coffee table to put stuff on. Basically look around your house, maybe a dining room chair with arms or some chair that's in your bedroom and move whatever you need to to use this. It's only temporary but it will make your recovery so much easier and comfortable. They are not expensive and you might even get one in the thrift shop before your surgery or borrow one. Put it where you need to, its only temporary. Don't forget picker up thing. The most useful thing.

Also, prepare that coffee table with stuff you use and need so you - or whoever will be with you- won't be running back and forth for things. snack bars, t remotes, tissues, water, a bag for trash, phone, etc. My recovery went quicker and less painful that I thought beforehand and here's hoping yours does too.

I had my LHR in september 2019. no cement. I used a rattan chair we bought for the garden and put extra cushions on to give me the right angle. I could push myself up and had the crutches to use to help me up.

NHS brought round a medical chair at a pre measured height for me. Now sits in the lounge. Hideous to look at, but was vital in the first month or so post-op

Don't forget to ask for a commode if your bedroom is far away from your bedroom. I have one just outside in case the stairs are a bit much in the morning.

Hi Alan if you're in the UK which sounds as if you are, you should have an OT assesment a few weeks before your surgery. They should provide you with the aids you need for your recovery. I never had a suitable chair and they loaned me one along with the other aids such as a trolley crutches and a high stool. When is your surgery ?

Hi Dawn, I suppose I'm not really surprised at that . I live in Cornwall and was lucky as only waited a few weeks from referral to having my THR .
