Changes to accessing notifications

Posted , 4 users are following.

Now I have to click twice to read a notification.  There used to be a permanent notifications tab and I could go directly to a notification.  Now I have to open the notifications list every time.  Is this supposed to be an improvement?  Does anyone know how to contact the site to question this change?

I don't think it was an error. The "improvement" created blank space for advert at the cost of extra clicks for user. Anoying, isn't it? Have no idea how to request the change back to original.

I don't get any ads.  It saves no space anyway as far as I can see.  It just mean the tab closes every single time you view a notification.  I used to be able to read a notification scroll to the top, click on the next.  Now I have to click on notifications again.   Not so bad if you are only looking at a dozen or so items, but if you don't keep up, as I didn't this week because I was busy, suddley there are dozens or maybe a hundred notifications, and you have to click on notifications tab, and then the notification itself, for every single one of them!  i don't think my already overused mouse hand is going to like this.  frowncry

Counted them, 71 notifications left to view this morning.   Sigh, I feel tired just thinking about it.  Although I do try to read all the responses on a given post and then scroll through the list and click them as read, so guess I'll have to be more diligent about that.  Double sigh.

You probably have advert block. Screen realestate is limited. You know how the notifications were listed (top right) in the scroll box, and then you can pick any to click as alink to the actual post.  That scroll box was using a space ( about 1/4 of the screen hight) . If you don't have advert blocked, then in that space it shows advertisment, which is gone as soon as you open " Notifications & badges".  I think that is the reason for change in setup/design of the screen.

Of course I have an ad block!  But correspondence from the moderator - the IT people claim that nothing has changed.  My theory is that AI is developing methods of manipulating us!

Maybe it's a simple as the most recent update to Windows.  Sometimes things just get "improved" too much.

no it is not the window updates... I am on win7 and still in control when/if the updates are installed. There was a change on the web site for sure.

I turn adds on/off. Some of the sites don't work or get hung if you have addvert block on.

There is so much to read on the internet, I figure if a site won't let me in I can find the info somewhere else.  Although I did break down and send $$ to The Guardian so I wouln't feel guilty...  I know one can disable the adblocker and have done so occasionally.  But that is not the issue here.  It's just a nuisance - a tab that used to stay open until I chose to click on a different tab now closes every time I've opened a notification.  Seems so pointlesss.  Why?

I have Windows 10 and there have been a few updates lately, although I think this change occurred a few days later so you are probably right it's not that.

and the "last reply" links are no longer a link for me. But they were annoying anyway as they only went to the topic not the last reply as they used to, and the sort order doesn't help.

it really means I don't read as much as I used to

If I've ever had last reply links I've been totally oblivious to them.

I always have had to open the list...

I don't know what Julian is referring to as that is an annoyance I haven't encountered yet.  It is really annoying to have to open notifications tab for every single notification.  Why would something like this change?  I always follow all the topics in this forum and many in the osteoporosis forum, so having to add perhaps fifty or a hundred clicks on a given day, depending how busy the site has been, is excessively annoying!  Would this be a result of a recent update to Windows and not the site?  Who and how can I contact Patient?

Just report your post using the flag at the bottom.

None of it bothers me really - the grey tone for the flash is silly, you have to look for it, but otherwise I have every post delivered to the door in my email and work through the 50 or so a day from the 2 forums in order. Which is why it irritates me when the notifications aren't working.

Worse things happen at sea - and I can tell you, the last big revamps they did were awful! You couldn't get on the site!!!

What grey tone for the flash?  What's the "flash".  And really early on I stopped notifications coming to my email, except new posts or messages, because it filled up my inbox (well, truth be told, spam folder) too quickly.  That wouldn't save the clicks anyway, would it?  Still have to toggle back and forth to email.

On my version in Chrome, up in the right corner of the page is an area with my avatar and name, two boxes with My messages and My discussions, Number of points and a grey star with Notifications and badges which flashes when there are still unread notifications. Previously it was in red and the whole thing flashed (I think, sort of thing you don't really register and then when it is gone...) Now it is just wishy grey and the star winks - too pathetic to say it flashes really!

Oh, I never had a flashing red star but now that you mention it, there is a feeble winky grey one now. Seems unnecessary to say the least.  I'll give that up if they give me back my more convenient access to notifications.  rolleyes
