Chemical sensitivity affecting throat/chest

Hi, I am a regular on here as some of  you will know.  I am still battling, esophagitis/gerd/hh/reflux which was diagnosed by scope earlier this year.  I refused PPI and doc gave me 150mg Zantac to take am and pm.  I also take mastic gum and seemed to be getting better.  I also cut out spices, way down on alcohol, onions, garlic, fizzy drinks, citrus, most meat and anything that hurt my tum.  I feel better for weeks then something sets me off again and I start again.

However, I have developed a sensitivity to smells like: perfume, after shave, deodorant, toilet cleansers, diesel and even the normally lovely smell of passing a log fire if it is smoking.  This is making my life a nightmare (we have a log fire at home).  Within seconds my throat and chest start burning and can last for hours.  I have had this for the last couple of months and my hubs scratches his head and can't understand why I won't let him use body cologne any more.

No one has heard of it just says - you are weird!!!!!!!

Before I go back to my doc with this and no doubt she will say she has never heard of it, can I have any thoughts from you guys.  I actually think you will know more than my doc anyway.  Other than that, I will google all day tomorrow to find something or someone who has this flippin  horrible complaint.

Thanks to you all.

G.

I thought I was going crazy when i couldn't tolerate and stopped using perfumes and my husbands colognes. I also react to cleaning supplies. I start to get a scratchy throat and vapors in my nose and feel like gagging! It's gotten to the point that when I am in church I try to stay away from anyone who smokes because that triggers it too! I do pretty well without being on anything with my lpr but had a flu shot the other day and have been having problems again! Please anyone who is reading this don't put off the shot because I said this! It could just be me!

Same here. Deodorant Spray is the worst for me. I've had to change to roll ons but even the smell from that can sometimes send me coughing! Xx

Same gem with deodorant.  I have bought the bog basic non sensitive non smell very boring one - and that started my throat.  When it did, I really thought I was being over dramatic and that maybe this was in my head.  Obvs not.  Thanks for your response - and all you guys - so I am not really losing the plot after all...................G.

For twenty probably going on 30 years I have used order free everything from bar soap to clothes soap, to deodorants, etc. Sometimes I buy baby products because they are less offensive with the smells. When I am around cigarette smells or exhaust they are the worst and my stomach bloats up like a blow-fish and I start getting sick. I am not around smoke at all and if I go somewhere with smoke I leave immediately. When planes had "non-smoking" sections (there is no such thing) I would be sick by the time I got to where I was going. It doesn't take a lot either if I smell a truck or even car exhaust I can be sick in seconds not minutes but seconds. No one has ever brought this up before so it is nice to hear once again I am not the only one. There are so many stupid things that you just let slide because if you remembered or repeated them all we would sound nuts. I have felt like I was nuts many times from this LPR BS!

Yes, I am glad I mentioned it.  You are right it happens in seconds.  I used some non scented hair spray today and first put cotton wool up my nose and also covered by mouth with a towell and it STILL managed to get through to my chest and throat.

It is a nightmare.  My hubs and I used to love going to car auctions but can't now as they wreak of exhaust fumes - it would see me off.

I saw my ENT last week, he suggested that my problem with sensitivity to smells was non allergic rhinitis - I had tried all the stero id sprays with no success. He suggested Rinar - have given that a go - just one treatment regime so far - has seemed to help a little. Walked thru the cosmetic area of shop yesterday a few times and didn't react as much - maybe just a fluke will see how it goes!

was the Rinar from the ENT? I think l will suggest it to my doc.  I  am not on PPI although specialist who did endo this year prescribed it.  What are you taking.  Zantac 2 x daily for me.

Hi Gwen, thne treatment regime is 3 days then only use again after 15 days in successive use. I have used one 3 day treatment - it seems to have helped the post nasal drip somewhat. It is capsicum based so a bit burny sensation.

Hi norma, did it help with the smells irritating you at all ?

Would say small positive result at this stage. But out walking in the spring with the pollens I think is having a negative impact - might try another 3 day "treatment" and see how I go

Rinar doesn't need a script in Australia where I am. i ordered it on the internet through Rhinoscience. It has Almond oil in it, so no good for nut allergy people I figure. I am on Somac 40mg twice a day along with Motillium before each meal. sometimes pop Gaviscon double strength tablets if required after meals.

I had a reaction to Febreze about a week ago...my throat and esophagus burned so badly all day long and even the next day....Today I had an ice coffee with a flavor in it and I right away had the same symptoms I had last week...heart burn and burning...terrible

Oh god forget coffee - that is a no no for me.  I have had a beakthrough, I am 90% better.  Ok now with exhaust and hubs can use his cologne.

I went to see a Kinesiologist.  She said she has had loads of success with acid problems.  She released inflammation via muscles in my hand.  Two days later it had gone, that was before Xmas and I am still ok today.  Not sure where you are, but Google it.

Not sure if this will be printed, if not I can PM you.

Hi gwen45436, LPR sufferer for 4 years with all the classical symptoms on 40mg Pantoprazole (Protonix) and Gavsicon Advance.  Over the past year I’ve noticed an increasing sensitivity to chemicals/odours.  Started when we had new carpets installed in early 2017 and I had a huge nasal/airway reaction due to offgassing.  Has since worsened to everyday chemicals into full blown multiple chemical sensitivity  currently with hyperosmia after we bought a new sofa (offgassed like mad) - I should’ve known better in hindsight!  I can now smell the faintest odour miles away, and anything in close proximity which a normal person could smell makes my nose bleed and severe airway irritation to the point I can “taste” smells in my mouth - boke.  In the process of going fully ‘unscented’ in our household.  MCS is clearly beyond the knowledge and capability of UK Doctors.....”are you feeling OK within yourself”.

Seen your post regards Kinesiology; how are you currently with regard to your chemical sensitivity and reflux?  Was the Kinesiology worth it?  Have you used any other methods to keep the symptoms at bay?

Still researching to see if there are any scholarly studies that show a link between reflux/LPR and MCS.  Also have asthma.  I don’t wheeze with LPR and MCS symptoms but voice hoarseness, breathless sensation below voicebox (but above lungs, no wheezing) , sinus irriation and ear ache are typical and inhalers do ease breathlessness and steroids massively help.  It was a laryngoscopy that confirmed my LPR (I have Bupa and my ENT is brilliant).  Anyone who is struggling with GP/Doctor’s in the UK can also use the Peptest to confirm an LPR diagnosis (see Peptest website).  Currently awaiting my test kit.

Have been managing LPR symptoms for 4 years but this escalation in MCS is a complete pain in the proverbial!

      Thanks in advance.

Hi there Pork - yes it is a real pain.  BUT I have to say I am still soooo much better after the Kinesiology.  I have BUPA also but as yet never used it.  My doc could not help me and shrugged her shoulders on my MCS.  So went to Kine - best thing I ever did.  £30 for just over 2 hours and she refused to accept any more!!!!!  I actually bought hubs a body splash at Xmas which was taboo before.  I can use laquer on my hair again but do have to hold my breath or can taste it but I think that it obvious.

The other day my hubs washed out some paintbrushes in our cellar and left the brushes in turps !!! The smell was blooming awful and kept rising up and into the bedrooms.  Needless to say I was  not amused at that smell in the house and yes I could taste the smell.  So he removed the brushed to outside in his garage - dumbo - should have done that in the first place lol - but that normally would have set me right off with massive sensitivity for days.  Throat would have burned and chest would have hurt a lot, along with pain in my back.  But it did not - the taste went away and no pain.  I can only put this down to the Kinesiology - for sure acid suppressors for gerd/reflux did not help my MSC.  I can also go shopping again and petrol fumes do not bother me like they did before my Kine.  My hubs laughed when I was going to see her but it is the best £30 I have ever spent.  Went again 2 times after (she says only one visit every 4/5 weeks is necessary) and I am still so much better.

You are UK - have a look  at Kine - this MSC is just awful.  We have a log fire and the fumes were killing me - now they don't.

Your Asthma won't help - but I can bet you this weird treatment will - pretty awesome and not to believe until you lie on that bed and experience it first hand.

      All the best to you.

      G.
