Chronic hip and back pain following total knee replacement in August 2016
Posted , 14 users are following.
following my tkr in August I've had most of the usual other people reporting but:-
untill the operation never had hip pain, some times intermittent back pain.
also when I walk my right foot(the operated leg) turns to the right, it's impossible to correct it with every step, and when corrected knee feels uncomfortable.
Has any one else experienced this problem with foot turning out
would appreciate any advice
good luck to all others going down this difficult path

So far so good my foot on the operated leg seems to behaving itself. I have back and hip pain which seems to develop over night. It only affects my right hip and my back on that side. I put it down to the difficulty in getting out of bed. I'm going to talk to my physio when she called on Monday. You need to talk to your physio especially about your foot. You will probably need to go back to you surgeon/medical team.

Hi Alison,
Does not sound right to me. I had a TKR in June 2016 and I am haaving some problems with it now but I think it is because I feel and hit my knee hard. It is getting better each day. As for your knee I think I would ask for an x-ray to make sure everything is ok inside just for piece of mind. Sounds to me like it is not straight. Best of luck with your reecovery and don't push it just let it happen.

Hi Alison sorry to hear you are experiencing back and hip pain as well as the pain that accompanies the. I had a sciatic like pain down my leg starting in my back...i had chiropractic treatment yesterday and was told my L4 & 5 were responsible. He manipulated my spine in that area and my back pain has gone. I still have a bit of pain behind my knee and was told the popliteus muscle is responsible. My chiropractor massaged the muscle (which was very painful) for a bit and the pain eased. It's still there but will take a while before it settles as my knee had been in a bent position for over a year and the popliteus had shortened. Good luck with your rehab

I Was really knock kneed before I had my first knee done, when they tried to force my foot straight to xray my knees, it was agonising.
After surgery, it still went out, and my groin ached like mad if I tried to walk much.
When I went back for my twelve month chech up, the xray showed I had arthritis in my hip.
But it's still going strong, havn't needed to have anyhing done yet.
Back pain is normal for me.

I've tried everything Lesley, including fusion, laminectomy, spinal stimulator, lots of spinal injection, and thirty years later, a chiropractor wouldn't touch me now.
Just have to live with it.

OMG! I really feel for you. I lived with back pain for 7 years until I had an MRI done which picked up osteoarthritis in my lower back and 3 herniated discs. In 2014 I had a lamenectomy and fusion which seems to have sorted me out. I have osteo in my right knee but after my left TKR I don't want to think of having that one done! Take care

Hello Jen.
yes leg and knee straight, and full extension.
when Iam standing my right foot turns lightly to the right, when I walk it turns bit more to the right, it's the leg that was operated on.
if I pull my foot back straight the knee hurts slightly, and it's impossible to walk by correcting the foot with every step.
its a bit concerning, was hoping it was going to be upwoods abd on woods.
iam also the only carer fir my husband who has Alzheimer's,

Hi Alison,
I'm sorry you are going through this, but it's nice to know I am not crazy/alone 😞 I have been dealing with the EXACT same symptoms. The left foot yanks to the side when walking and when trying to keep it aligned, its uncomfortable. The hip and groin pain as well as low back pain are killing me too. I plan on discussing this with my surgeon if he will listen. He seems to not want to ever hear of anything "wrong", but it's my body and I can't take it anymore. My Left TKR was done on May 24th of this year and I ended up having a MUA (manipulation under anesthesia) 6 weeks later as I could not get my ROM past 80. I am 45. I am scheduled to see my Dr again on the 14th and report back to work on the 15th and I am scared to death. I work for Chrysler at the Toledo Jeep plant and I am on my feet all day for 10 hours/6 days a week. Not sure how that is going to play out.

Hello tneel317
just don't want to beleave Iam going to have to live with thus hip and back pain, it's been so hard trying to get over this surgery, I knew it was going to be hard, even very hard maybe, but I can not beleave it's been so bad, and Iam really no wimp.
what makes it even harder is Iam the only carer for my husband who is 82 and has Alzheimer's, so I really need to be able to get about.
Today my knee has started to click, the knee cap painful and very hot, and the hip and back making every thing very worrying.
The only reason I had this operation was to deal with excruciating knee pain, not e nd up with all this pain, and different problems on a daily basis.

You may have to talk to a pain management center and see if a series of spinal injections can get some relief for you. I understand completely way you are going through. My wife is 79 and in advanced stages of Parkinson's disease. About 3 months ago she fell ( Parkinson's related fall) and broke her hip necessitating a partial hip replacement. Since then dementia has really kicked in and created a need to be there every time she needs meds. The physical side doesn't even start to compare to the mental strain. I am fighting the hip/spine pain since I twisted my back a few months ago and have been getting massage therapy but its so slow that I think I'm going to have to give in and go back to the injections. Its just too much of a burden to fight it on your own. I might suggest you discuss your whole set of circumstances with your primary care Dr (not surgeon) and get a plan of action.

Hello thanks for your message, yes going to get advise, although when I went for my check up I did advise them about the foot.
they said there was nothing wrong, I did not gave the cronic pain in my back and hip at the time, but I did advise them I was having a very bad balance problem.
to day the pain in hip and back is so bad it's really affecting my mobility.
will get advise and let you know how I get on, also really worried about the amount of pain killers Iam having to still take.
