Chronic nausea for 15 years, still no answers!

Hi all.

I'm posting this in the hope that someone can relate and offer some sort of help or advice as this has gone on far too long!

I'm a 25 year old female and I've had spells of almost constant nausea since I was around 10 years old. When I was younger it got to the point where I would just not eat (not helpful!) for fear of being sick, as I've grown up I've almost accepted that feeling sick is a part of my life now and I try to carry on/eat as normal unless I have a particularly bad "flare up". However I really shouldn't have to live like this!

When I first complained of it my parents took me to the doctors numerous times and at a very young age, after complaining the nauseous feeling was at the back of my throat, I was told I had reflux and given lansaprozole. When it didn't work whatsoever my dose was doubled until my mother actually complained that I was being given such a high dosage at a young age!

After this I just tried to put up with it. My final year at high school I was mostly off school feeling unwell! I struggled through but by the time I got to university I was fed up. I went back to the docs and this time was diagnosed with IBS and prescribed mebeverine. The most this did for me was reduce the gas and bloating that came with my upset stomachs but after a month of taking it it actually gave me nausea EVERY single day til I stopped it!

In recent years after finally realising how much this has been ruling my life, along with realising how bad my symptoms can get - nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, fatigue, headaches etc and sometimes feeling sick to the point of thinking I'm going to be physically sick, only to burp! I've finally gone to the docs several more times.

I've tried domperidone which helped a little but I was eventually taken off it as I still felt unwell, I tried omeprazole (mostly to please docs as they still insist its reflux) and was recently given erythromycin which I never took after a consultant was horrified I'd been prescribed it in the first place.

I've had a endoscopy which revealed I have a hiatus hernia (my dad has one too so must be hereditary) however I very very rarely get heartburn or any kind of reflux and my symptoms are not related! It also revealed an inflamed stomach lining but nothing else. I've also had a stomach emptying test which came back normal, I've been tested for helicobacter pylori NUMEROUS times over the 15 years and most recently I've had an ultrasound scan of my liver and gallbladder. I was referred to a consultant in the past few months who believes my symptoms are not stomach related, hence liver etc tests! I'm still awaiting blood testsbut no word yet. Im meant to get referred to a G.I but again no word yet.

The most recent tests have been over a span of one year so it's a terribly slow process! I have infact just been told my next appointment with the consult is 7 months from now which is frankly ridiculous. Hence I've come here!

I would greatly appreciate any help with this as its starting to take over my life! I've had years with no nausea at all but this has been over a year now with almost constant nausea. I've also been tested for celiac disease which came back negative, I've bizarrely never had stools tested despite upset stomachs and I've tried a lacto-free diet for two weeks which made no difference! I additionally tried to eat 100% healthily/no processed foods etc for two weeks which equally made no difference, still chronic nausea and fatigue!

Any suggestions on what this could be would be massively appreciated!

Dear Zoriana....I posted something the other night that helps with nausea. What works for me and my daughters is tea...either Ginger or Chamomile. Most supermarkets carry it or an asian supermarket, they have everything. I find myself nauseous when I have not eaten enough. If the tea works, you will find yourself very hungry afterward. I hope it it works.

    Hey All,

After reading all of this, and thank you for sharing, has any of you had the following occur?

About 2 years ago, I was on an inverted ab machine doing abs and slipped coming down, instead of centering myself on bench, I re-lifted myself up with my left side and immediately it felt like something went up under my left rib cage. I immediately stopped working out and went to my primary care doctor a week later. He thought a hernia and sent me to a specialist.

After a CT and MRI was done, they said that they didn't see anything and told me to go to pain management. I then got a second opinion from another general surgeon and they didn't see anything either. I talked to a doctor on Live Health Online and just based on my symptoms said that it could be Abdominal Aorta so I am waiting on seeing a Vascular Surgeon.

To fast foward, in the last 6 months, during the day I am dizzy and light headed and have constant pain daily below/under left rib. I recently took it upon myself and got blood work done which only showed high levels of Non -HDL Cholesterol and LDL Cholesterol.

When I lay on my back, within 30 min I will immediately wake up with both calves burning and a crazy irregular heart beat with pulsating/palpations near left rib and sometimes by belly button. If I lay on my stomach or right side, then I will immediately wake up due to similar symptoms but also feels like something trying to beat so hard and out of chest below left rib. What's crazy is that when I sit up and work in my office chair, I feel like a bump on left side above hip; but when I lay down at night, I cannot feel this bump. One night my BP was 80/45 with a 74 pulse.

Any help is greatly appreciated and please ask me any questions. I have been logging a journal with symptoms and what I have been eating throughout day.

    Warm Regards,

    Lewis Linscott

Ask your doctor to see if you have H Pylori!!!

    several ways to get tested.

Look it up online to understand what it is.

I promise its worth ruling out!

I'm so sorry! I see you said you were tested for HPylori. I hope you figure this out. I had similar symptoms.

In spite of the fact that you think your Hiatus Hernia is not the problem, I personally think it might be because I too had a long bout of nausea, with the usual tests to find the cause. All came back negative.

I did not have any other HH symptoms either, but my consultant said that the stomach pushes up through the opening of the hernia and into the chest, where it is obviously not supposed to be.

You can also experience a 'backflow' of stomach acid into the oesophagus without experiencing the usual acid reflux symptoms.

All of this can make you feel quite ill - and certainly fatigued. I would recommend a further consultation with a medical professional to discuss the possibility that this hernia is causing your nausea.

Hi to All...My first time posting anything like this, please have patience. I am in my sixties and have two adult daughters, also have some nausea. I have found over the years that the more I eat, the less I feel sick in the stomach. When I was young and had no appetite, my doctor recommended periactin to enhance my appetite. I also had a friend who took it to increase the amount of eating. So when you are nauseous and cannot eat, it only makes the situation that much worse. Two years ago, I had an endoscopy to find I did have H. Pylori. Past December I had a stool test to see if the antibiotic regimen worked, and it did. He did find that I had an inflammed stomach but since the H. Pylori is gone, then why do I still get nauseous. At around 28, I had my gallbladder removed because of a bilirubin stone. I am still perplexed as to why I get nauseous since I never skip meals, and wonder how much food is enough to quell the sick feeling. I do have lots of trapped gas in my stomach which I feel makes matters worse. I suffered in my youth from dizziness which I can now say was related to not enough food. My youngest daughter is not well if she doesn't eat enough also. Maybe it is our makeup...the amount of acid in our stomachs. How some people can starve themselves and act as if they have no stomach at all is a mystery. It is miserable to feel unwell and have no appetite and most of all nauseous. Ginger Tea and Chamomile help so much for upset stomachs. You can get it at most supermarkets...for us it has worked like a charm. I've thought about this over the years so much because these are the things it seems doctors can't fix. If they themselves don't have it, they are clueless. It is not a disease, but a symptom and I'm guessing that everyone's reason to be nauseous varies. Let me give an example of how doctors can be naive. I take high blood pressure medication which can be a nightmare because of all the side effects. After taking a new one, I had a weird stomach for months. I assumed it was a stomach disorder. I talked to him to see if I should stop the medicine. He said that stomach discomfort was not one of the side effects. Anyway, I convinced him to allow me to stop it to see. I did and my stomach was back to normal....then to prove it, started to take it again and voila, my stomach was off again. I tried another medication in the same family of medicines, and there it was again. So...if it happened to him, he would know better. Being nauseous can take over your life and its a sick cycle that is impossible at times to break. I would suggest the Ginger or Chamomile Tea (they can't hurt you) and if it works, try eating plain food, not spicy to try to increase your eating. I wish you all good luck...

    Hi All:-

I had Nausea for 3 months inexplicably once.....turns out I just needed antidepressants for anxiety. Nausea went away in three weeks for good.

I developed Nausea again about 3 years later. Turns out I am withdrawing from Ativan and Anti depressants after gradually chopping and changing and coming off anti depressants. Still coming off of them and have been living this hell for one year. Praying for the day I am off everything and turn the corner on the withdrawal.

Nausea, puking and dizziness are a common part of anxiety.

have you ever come back with high bilirubin in your blood test results? I had the same issue until I figured it was Gilberts Syndrome. It flares up at stressful times.

I'm so sorry about what you are going through. I've been struggling with the same problem for 10 years or more myself. BUT I HAVE A NEW CLUE. It all may be due to POST NASAL DRIP!! look into it. just press your nasal blade a bit or take some over the counter meds and that might help!!! plz let me know of that actually works. I just wanna make sure

Thank you so much for the Reply. And we will try this, because at this point we are trying anything for her to feel better.

Wow! Still no relief and they never found the cause. My daughter is 15 and has been going through the same thing since she was 10. I am out of ideas at this point. Her last test was an MRI of the brain and it was normal. She has had a ultrasound/Endoscopy/MRI and several blood test that was all normal. It seems like all the doctors don't believe her but I do. I'm sorry you have had to go through this for so long. Hope one day there will be an answer that all of us can share.

I believe your digestion is Neurologically way to slow. My GF has MS and her lifelong nausea was always blamed on MS. she is 60 now and was diagnosed with MS 30 years ago. She has had 2 abdominal blockage surgeries since we got together in the last 5 years. She has had 8 abdominal surgeries since being diagnosed with MS 30 years ago. Her last surgery was April of 2021 and the hospital doctor was telling her she may need to be on intravenous nutrients for the rest of her life because her intestines and digestion was not working. The surgeon instructed the doctor to start intravenous Reglan and it worked right away. Now she takes one too three Reglans daily. Typically only one a day before our daily meal in the evening. Because of Reglan she is still alive, eating well, never has nausea and her bowl movements and quality are almost as good as mine now. She used enimas once a week for four years to empty some out if her bowels. Now she does not need them, thanks to Reglan! Are you pooping daily? or at least 3 times per week? If not, try Enima's or better yet Reglan. Reglan is a prescription medication for nausea and more importantly, bowel motility/function. Good luck and God bless you! ps my mom is 76 and in the hospital right now for nausea but Reglan is super secret because the machine wants you to keep coming back!!!

I know this post is old, but did you ever find out a cause?

I've had these exact symptoms for years - I've been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, gastritis and acid reflux disease, the medication for the acid reflux helped, but the nausea still persists.

My doctor doesn't know what to do and this is the first time I've come across someone with the same symptoms!

    Hi,

I know this is years later but I just found this question. I've had very similar symptoms with tests like blood work, MRI's, endoscopies, and a gastric emptying test done. Nothing. I have slight irritation in my stomach but no one thinks it would be causing such severe nausea. Although I do have acid reflux and neutropenia which no one else mentioned but they still don't think this is the cause of my nausea. I was on ondansetron, taking it 3 times a day for 4 months with little to no resolve. Doctors keep saying its in my head and there's nothing physically wrong with me. So I'm on a depression/anxiety medication but I'm still not feeling any better. I also was diagnosed with celiacs but they say it's completely under control and there's no way its still causing my nausea. I've only felt like this for 2 years but in that time my life has been completely derailed. I'm still in high school and can't go to in person school because I feel so bad. I know there's still a lot of time to try and figure out what's going on but the doctors have no ideas. If anyone's had any diagnoses with similar symptoms please respond to this. Thanks!
