Ciprofloxacin poisoning?
Posted , 76 users are following.
Hi All - I was prescribed a course of Cipro and Diclofenac (NSAID - apparently not a good idea)
and after day one I had to call my GP as I had anxiety, stomach problems and shaking - of course they said can't be the Cipro keep taking it. After 5 days I couldn't go on, so agreed I would stop - then after a couple of weeks the pain hit - severe muscle cramps, pain in joints, leg pain, headaches, neck pain, and worst of all severe anxiety, some of this has cleared up but 5 months later I'm still suffering.
I noticed there haven't been any posts on here for a while - is there anything happening in the uk to make people, Doctors etc more aware of this poison, are there any known legal actions against the makers by someone in the uk?
It seems Cipro is prescribed as a first line drug for relatively minor problems when something else would be better - to be honest I would rather have put up with the original symtoms than go through this. The worrying thing is how long will it go on for - it is very difficult to function at work when you feel this way
regards
Mike

Thank you for logging on to the forum. I am dismayed but not surprised concerning your Dad's plight. You have my backing and I am prepared to spread the word any way I can
kind regards

I have spoken to 2 attorneys, (I live in NJ and my father died in Pennsylvania)....both attorneys say that there is no way to prove that Cipro killed my father......plus he was 85 years old and if he didn't die of Cipro poisoning, he would have died of something else. His death certificate reads "Sepsis" as the cause of death....he had complete organ failure, which we were told about at 5 PM on the day he died....we were never told he had Sepsis.....#2 cause of death is listed as Diverticulitis, which he never had a problem with, nor have I ever heard of anyone dying from this.
Can anyone shed light on this? how can the hospitals and doctors get away from murdering a healthy 85 year old????? Everything I read about Cipro fits the profile of my father's illness.....needless to say, my mother cannot accept my father's passing.....it makes no sense and no doctor wants to talk about it. I did pick up his 500+ page medical report from the hospital, and am in the beginning stages of reading the report. Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Perhaps this post can help and possibly save someone's life. Al's daughter.

I am not finished, as I will be writing to the president of the hospital after I read thru all of my Dad's medical records....can you imagine 523 pages for a 6 day hospital stay? 108 pages of lab tests alone? and on the 6th day he expired.....he should still be here with my mother and I. No doctor wanted to discuss Cipro.....what is going on?
This is for you, Dad.....please know that we are trying for justice in your name. One day I will give your name to the world, but right now I need to keep all names private.

I just wanted to run something passed you all.
I'm in the uk, 30 years old male. I was incorrectly prescriped cipro 500 tablets recently. Despite my hesitation to continue taking after first tablet I was encouraged to keep going as the doctor knows best. I managed 5 tablets in total as i was so worried about feeling sick and having headache. I don't like tsking tablets at best of times. I stopped taking them in saturday but ive developed pind and needles in my feet and shooting pains I my left leg.
Ive seen another gp today who said that I shouldn't have been given them and just sent for an ultrasound as there was no infection. I'm so worried now about what the next 12 months hold for me. The doc and pharmacist just said to give it a few days for whatever id still in my system to come out. However upon reading the internet the damage could already have been done??
Im a regular runner 30-40 miles a week and petrified this could screw me up. I also have a wife and two small children so petrified for them too.
Am I over analysing everything? Some reassurance would be good as I'm so scared.
I also don't knw whether to put in a complaint about this gp! He shpuld have known better!

Hi, I have the same issues right now. After taking 2 days of 1000mgs of levoflaxcin I am left with pain in my leg like cramp and the arches of my feet are tight and painful. My stomach is ruined and I m still getting dizzy. It's only been 30hours since I last took it so really hoping it clears from my system. This stuff is poison!

Hi Claire,
I'm sorry to see you've been given Levofloxacin. Most posts on this thread are from over a year ago, but if you read through it you may find some help and advice. For your stomach I would suggest you try and eat some natural Greek yoghurt, little and often to try and replace you natural flora which the levo will have stripped out. The Greek is high fat and the toxins are fat soluble so hopefully it will also help flush out any residual poison that might still be in your gut.
Unforunately, most of the toxins will have spread into your cells around your body (like in your legs and feet), so will be harder to do anything about. The main thing is not to overdo any exercise as it can make your muscles worse. Go to this thread here on this site
https://patient.info/forums/discuss/fluoroquinolone-toxicity-syndrome-427305
it was started by the moderator so that people can easily find useful addresses and information. There is a new UK website plus US sites and groups.
Hope this helps!

Hi Claire, I'm writing to ask if you're doing OK. I always worry when people stop posting after saying how ill they feel!
I see Madge recommended taking magnesium, which is a good idea as it helps 'escort' the toxins out of the cells - albeit slowly. It can upset your tummy in high doses. You can also get magnesium oil in a spray which you apply directly to the painful areas of your legs and feet (and it goes straight in, thus not affecting your gut).
