Citalopram: 20mg for 8 weeks then 30mg for 2 weeks - feel much worse!

Posted , 247 users are following.

Hi everyone. First time posting here. I am worried that I feel much worse after an increase in my Citalopram dosage from 20mg to 30mg.

Some symptoms I've been experiencing:

- insomnia and bad sleep during the night

- tiredness and "brain fog" during the day

- persistent anxiety and circular thoughts

- feeling reckless and self-destructive

- hopelessness, feeling lost and directionless

- unable to write or be creative for my studies

- panic attacks and chest pains, which have never subsided throughout my 10 weeks on Citalopram

Please can anyone offer some advice or share their experience. I just really want to know that it gets better and that my life will improve on the increased dose. I am really not coping right now and can't see a way forward.

Thank you.

Hang on in there I think we all want/would like immediate results. Reading some of the queries on this subject it seems some folk have to wait a long time (months not weeks they are saying) for good results.

Think we are all guilty of wanting that 'magic' instant effect. We have to stick with it longer.Am having a similar episode myself, not quite the same. All I can say is hang on in there, probably getting anxious about getting a good result makes us impatient & makes it all seem worse.

I have been suffering anxiety for about 6 months now due to overload of stress following the death of 4 people close to me aswell as working lots and long hours at a hospital my anxiety is mainly health anxiety. I tried to treat it naturally and failed miserably have now been on citalopram 20mg for nearly 4 weeks I feel constantly tired still have constant chest and back pain and morning anxiety is awful. I'm due to start cbt this week I know it's early days but can't see an end to this anywhere near. the side effects have been a bit naff wake up every morning from a broken nights sleep still feeling shattered with soaking wet night clothes due to sweating and chest back and jaw pain. please tell me it gets better. in the last 3 months of had heart attacks every cancer u can think of the newest one is mouth cancer due to the fact I started smoking again and the jaw pain. Is there anything I can be doing to get me through this

Hi everyone - and especially to Katecogs

Thank you for all your very helpful and positive comments on here, you have really helped to give me hope that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel of anxiety. I have been taking 20mg Citalopram for 7 weeks now. I do definitely feel better, calmer, happier and the depression has lifted but I still don't ever feel "normal". I seem to want to eat all the time, I am so abnormally tired in the afternoons (I take meds at bedtime) and I feel "odd and strange" all the time. One thing I don't understand is that I have a strange ongoing muscle tightness in my cheeks, forehead and eyes, like I am constantly squeezing my face tight, it aches. When I wake in the morning my facial muscles now involuntarily twitch, I think because they have been so tight and tense constantly. I am doing everything i can eg. meditating, running, swimming, massage etc. but this awful feeling of a tight skowling feeling is constant, affects my driving and its now a vicious circle because it seems to have become a uncontrollable habit and is increasing my anxiety. I have spoken to my GP and am told this is all part of anxiety and it will take time. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced such an odd and debilitating symptom of anxiety (this started 4 months ago before I started taking the meds). I think I am going mad 😕 Many thanks from anyone out there who may have experienced similar 😃. Good luck to you all xx

i did not experience what you experience.but i Definitely had an axnxiety symptom before meds called paresthesia of the scalp and it was severe felt like a million fire ants biting my scalp.and eventually after 8months the celexa got rid of it.so isay hang on the celaxa will get rid of your issue.i assume you got tested for any underlying issues.best regards

Thanks for your reply Lois. No I havent been tested for anything else, as im pretty sure (hope?) it is just very tense tight facial muscles. The muscle tightness in my cheeks and eyes seems to stop when i purposely make myself relax my face. It also stops when i do yoga specifically for migraines! And also not there at all when i first wake in the morning. Glad to hear your symptoms eventually got better 😃

      Hi Cher

Many thanks for your thanks - yes there is always light at the end of the tunnel - its just finding the correct route to it and of course, medicine too.

7 weeks (or 9 now) is good that you feel some benefit already and yes you won’t feel normal yet. It’ll come.

Like Lois, no I’ve never had the muscle tightness in my face or anywhere actually, but meds affect everyone in different ways. Lois is right too about paresthesia and have heard some people do feel something like crawling ants.

Also when we have anxiety we subconsciously tense our body and its very common for people to clench their teeth without realising they’re doing it. Try releasing your jaw, letting it relax as this might be what’s causing the tight facial muscles?

As you say this muscle tightness stops when you do yoga then it does seem that you might be jaw / teeth clenching without realising it? Again when you wake from a deep relaxed sleep in the morning your muscles are still relaxed, and no doubt your body automatically starts to jaw clench soon after.

does not sound right to me. Did you discuss increasing dosage with your doctor first?

If so or in any case either try to see your doctor or if that not possible try to get a telephone appointment with them to discuss the effects you are feeling now.

    Good luck

Hi, I'm new here but have greatly benefited from all the discussion. I'm in week two of citalopram and dealing with the increased anxiety but also have had a few good moments here and there. Katecogs, could you send me both the link and the book you've been mentioning? I'd greatly appreciate it.
