Dear Margaret. I get to keep a home supply of steroids and antibiotic which are on repeat prescription. When I get wheezy and more breathless and coughing more than usual I take the steroids soon as possible but not at night cos I couldn't sleep. Normally feel a lot better pretty soon and fine when the course is finished 5 days. I take the antibiotics if the mucus goes coloured throughout the day Take them soon as possible and if you can drop a sputum sample into health centre. I've had this for 7 years and this system certainly works well for me. It is quite a lot I take but get told if I need them take them. Hope this has been a wee bit of help to you

Steroids and antibiotics are used when you have a lung infection, you shouldn't be using them if you do not have an infection.  Make an appointment to see your doctor asap or at least make a telephone appointment to discuss your symptoms.

Your doctor can listen to your lungs to confirm if you do or do not have an infection.  Clear mucus usually indicates there is no infection.

A change in weather, colder, damp, windy can make many of us more breathless, being breathless does not mean there is a lung infection.  Just be sure to take your inhaler medication as prescribed and if this is not helping check in with your doctor or respiratory nurse.

You need to speak with your GP concerning your prescribed medication.  Oral steroids are only prescribed if needed, if your doctor has prescribed them then you will need his or her advice on continuing or stopping them, Suggest you read the information leaflet that comes with the prescribed medication.

      As I said above.......

If your inhaler medication is not working for you you need to chat with your doctor concerning this.  "

I get breathless as well. My respirologist has now given me a two breaking tests. Sleep apnea which is mild. This week he gave me mask to wear only at night where I inhale during the night. Hard to get used to but can say my breathing is better and not feeling so tired. It's distilled water set at the lowest level that I breath in. I can see the difference after just the 4 days I am trying this.

Mucodyne and drinking plenty of water to help keep the mucus thin and more easily able to cough up.  A sputum sample for the doctor to send for analysis may help determine what course of treatment your husbands doctor can prescribe.  If symptoms are severe and ongoing your doctor can refer your husband back to a specialising respiratory consultant.  In all cases discuss the problems with your husbands GP.

For your husbands other issues he needs to discuss those separately with the appropriate specialists concerned.  These being unrelated to COPD need treating separately.

Hi Vee2, I will be speaking with the Gp tomorrow. Hes due to finish his antibiotics tomorrow. Last year he had pluerisy so maybe its all come back. But I spoke to his sister who seemed to think as hes eating then its just that this Virus is a nasty one and taking a while to clear up. Sometimes I get the feeling that as my Hubby is over 60, he can get on with it. But I will fight all the way for him. And as for other issues on here I have joined the groups. Regards Amanda
