clicking in hip 8 weeks after hip replacement

Posted , 19 users are following.

I am 36 years old and had a hip replacement 8 weeks ago. The op seems to have been a success and I am in no pain now and am delighted with the results. The only thing is I've noticed a slight click when I move in certain ways. Has anyone else had this and is it normal?

    Hi Lucy,

I had my THR in April of this year and yes i use to get a click when move in a certin way, now i get a clunk when walking it more in the fatty side of my bottom am sure it's coming from the hip. Hopefully it will stop in near future.

Hiya, glad it's all going well apart from the clicking? I'm almost 4 wks post op with my THR & so far I haven't experienced this problem, if u read a few posts on this site a few people have mentioned a clicking & this seems to be mainly from those fitted with the ceramic joint (not sure what joint u have?) I'd mention it to either ur GP or consultant when u next see them, good luck 😊

Thanks Carmen, that makes me feel less worried. Tom, it is ceramic hip I've been given. I'll see how it goes, no pain, so not too worried yet.

hi I had my right hip done 11 weeks today and I'm doing great, but I noticed that feeling too, I was told it could take up to two year until everything grows around the new hip, so I'm like you and glad someone else has experienced it too. good luck x

    Hi Lucy

I had my opp on third of July Im 65 and was told I was being fitted with a ceramic coated metal total hip replacment.

My old joint used to clunk so loudly you could hear it if you walked next to me!.

My new one clicks a bit but if you clench the muscles it stops. The advise from others on this foroum is keep up with the excercises and dont break the 90 degree rule and in time it will come right. My consultant advised 50% at 6 weeks 80% at 18 weeks and xmas/ new year for complete. so its still early days.

Keep up your exercises. I got the occasional click when I started moving a bit faster and not thinking so much about the way I was moving.  What I found was that if I moved the leg a few times it seemed to tighten up the muscles and all was well.  I rarely get it now - 6 months on - but I got it a few times when I started walking after my TKR and I think it was because I hadn't used the muscles for a few days.

Thanks so much for all the responses, so glad other people have experienced the same thing and that it passes eventually. I do think the exercises help enormously. Thanks for all the good advice everyone.

I had a ceramic hip replacement fitted five years ago. It has always made noises and it's still doing it but not as much as it did at first. There's no pain with it. It comes down to this as far as I can see: If something is common is it normal? I haven't been able to get an answer.

    Hi..

As many others I had this 'clicking' for around the first 12wks after which it slowly disappeared...Must admit I was very concerned something was amiss, but 6mnths on and everything is now fine, and it's.best thing I've ever done..

Now for the other hip early next year..At least I now know what to expect, not sure if that's good or bad.ha.

Again, thanks so much for everyone's advice, it really does help.

Juliette, I hope this does mean it's normal and Paulus, good luck with your other hip replacement next year!

      Thanks Lucy.

Cant pretend I'm looking forward to it,but I have full confidence in the surgeons at Wrightington hospital.

The long term benefits far outweigh the few months of pain and lack of sleep IMO.

Not sure I should mention this here, but I will anyway..My wife had to have a malignant melanoma removed at Christie hosp today, whilst there I got talking to some cancer patients, which made me realize again that my THRs are as nothing compared to the stress and suffering some people go through..

The staff at Christies are magnificent and the hospital deserves all the accolades it gets..Our NHS is the best in the world.

Well you've got yourselves under two of the best kept secrets in the North West. Wrightington's statistics are excellent (and well followed) and Christies is another world leader.

Hope you both do well with your future NHS dealings

Oh I'm so sorry Paulus, what a worry for you. One of my relatives had two removed inthe past couple of years and no further growth. I hope your wife recovers well. I know what you mean, it does put things in perspective. Good luck nonetheless.
