Clunking hip

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hey all.

Im still plugging along....8 weeks post op now. I am hearing a "clunking" in my hip once in a while. No pain. Otherwise everything is going great. My surgeon lifted the 90° rule but no leg crossing or twisting still. Im wondering if bending forward is causing the "clunk". Any thoughts?

Cheers?

    Dear Yabut

I would be very careful as what you are describing sounds as if the ball of your new hip is not being held tight into the cup. If this is so then you are at risk of a dislocation. Building up your muscle strength would normally help the situation.

Clunking is not good. It could indicate that the ball is loose. I would notify your doctor.

It is very unlikely that the ball is loose as it is fixed to the stem on what is usually called a morse taper.

Clunking does not sound good, I had squeaking in hot weather which is very different, fairly common, and nothing to worry about.  Clunking, as Richard says, implies something loose, the good news is that rebuilding muscle strength should sort it out. If in ANY doubt, ask your surgeon/hospital/GP.

I’m 3.5 months post op THP. No sounds. Seen surgeon early this week had X-ray and need no return visits with him. restrictions were lifted at 6 wk check up told to gradually do things ,no forcing. One permanent restriction,no training for or running races. Lol Then again I’m a female senior who never ran🙂

Yes I got the no running rule...but I hate running too so no worries!! Haha!

My surgeon says only run when being chased! Heehee.

    Hi,

I was your surprised your surgeon lifted the 90° rule. I was told 12 weeks by the surgeon and physio, then to be careful for another 6 months. It is interesting to see the way different surgeons approach protecting the hip after surgery.

Yes the approach the surgeon preforms your surgery makes a differences with restrictions. I had Lateral and had the normal restrictions for 6 Wks and slowly returning to a normal for me lifestyle.

Oh Anterior approach patients have no restrictions from day 1,i’ve been told.???

Minimal restrictions. Not supposed to swing THR leg backwards. My surgeon wanted me to use regular walker for 2 weeks and then cane. I had some at-home exercises to do. No PT.

Of course, there were the "leg is heavy" issue in the beginning and the meds that needed to be taken.

      No 90 degree rule.

Maybe it depends which approach? Mine is posterior.

Thankyou all. I will be asking some questions. I'll call my surgery navigator today.

I will continue my strengthening, walking and stretching. You are all so great!! ?

I should add that the x ray showed my hip to be in good shape at the time my surgeon released the 90° rule.

I am enjoying shaving my leg again!! Haha!
