Cold sensation when breathing in!

Hi all
PLEASE PLEASE I need some advice if anyone has experienced these symptoms.....
For the last 6 months or so I have been coughing more so at night during my sleep and it wakes me up. Initially when I went to the Dr she thought I had acid reflux (which I have suffered from in the past), she put me on lansaprasole for 12 weeks and the cough has not stopped. I then saw another Dr whom said they need to do a chest xray so I had this done 10 days ago, the result is clear. The Dr gave me an reliever inhaler.
My symptoms are ~
Coughing that wakes me at night, dry and unproductive
Clearing throat all day
Tight feeling around the thyroid area
Blocked sound by throat when I breathe in (not a chest wheeze)
Scratch in my throat when I breathe in which provokes the cough
Cold air sensation when I inhale, this is constant
The Dr has referred me for a Spirometry and Reversability lung function test which is in 3 weeks. My son has extreme asthma and my grandmother had asthma which she developed in her 40's.
I used to be a smoker for 17 years, recently stopped 8 weeks ago.
The throat condition has been going on since last year, I had a clear xray Jan 2016 including a clear scope down the nose into my voicebox and lyranx together with an endoscopy to check for acid reflux - all clear! Series of 5 lots of FBC's & CA125 tests and thyroid blood tests - normal!
I am petrified I have an undetected lung cancer now, but the Dr thinks I have nocturnal & seasonal asthma. I use the inhaler when I feel blocked but it only last for a few hours where I feel some relief! At times it feels like I am breathing through a straw or piece of cloth!
ANY advice is very welcomed, this is driving me mad...........
Thank you

i have had tightness around my throat and a few other symptoms you mentioned (difficulty breathing in - mostly while exercising, but sometimes at other times) for years, and doctors always told me it was asthma. More recently, however, I was tested for vocal cord dysfunction, which can cause the similar symptoms and is often mistaken for asthma. Turns out I have some hyper-sensitive vocal cords! Asthma may be a coexisting condition, but not always. Hope you've been able to fond some answers!

is there any treatments to help with your vocal cord issue? I'm having the same problems after covid. I'm getting a constant cold sensation in my throat and chest, feels like bronchial tubes. a tightness feeling in my throat, short of breath after exercising.

I suffer from the cold sensation when breathing in every day sometimes around same time where i have to breathe through a scarf or blanket and feel the warmth. constantly clearing my throat, coughing and mainly in am coughing bad to bring up mucus. on a regular inhaler, shots every 2 wks and 3 pills a day! all this and i dont feel like my old self....still not 100%

Hey there
Sorry to read that you are experiencing the same issue
To be honest, this sensation has probably happened to me less and less - I have stopped smoking and its got so much better plus I did away with the inhalers and it much better
question is do you smoke at all?

hey kay,
i have had this cold sensation when breathing in for almost 5 years now. i never knew what it was and i searched it up on google. i went to the doctor and they were very confused because all seemed to be normal. they asked if i had asthma or any smokers in my family which i don't. they also stuck a camera down my throat and took some chest and throat x-ray. the feeling is like drinking toothpaste or having ice water continuously. the only times i can sleep well is if i put my blanket to my nose to "warm up" the air i breathe. i asked my doctor if it was acid reflux and they said not likely. i don't have any allergies and no pets as well. anyone feeling the same things i do? is there a fix?

I've been trying to explain the breathing sensation I get while breathing in.. I've explained it as if my nose and throat are "too" clear.. then throat tickles.. and it feels like there is something in my throat... no cough.. no hurt..... all tests.. xrays and scans including nuclear tests of chest of thyroid of lungs of kidneys all clear.. no lumps anywhere... no swelling in neck... not one doctor has looked in my mouth at my throat... one doctor in the emergency room(went because I have had blood clots in my lung from a surgery and was having that feeling) get a bit rude me... he came in and said all of your tests and scans are all clear... I'm sure I looked at him perplexed.. in which he said to me.."Are you disappointed there isn't anything wrong with you?" I replied .."No" just wish I knew what was going on... now I'm being treated for ulcers until I can see a gastroenterologist on March 17th.... and still waiting on appointment to be set with an neurologist to rule out MS.... it is not a settling feeling waiting to see if its something that needs immediate treatment or if its something that could have a simple fix

Hey everyone, Kay, et al...
I have been dealing with a lot of the same symptoms from this thread for just about 10 days now. It's nice to know that its not all just in my head lol.
I'm 28 years old, dealing with some vascular issues. It started with just dry mouth during the night, to to then a stuffy nose, to then having a random panic attack, then having one or two acid reflux episodes, and now I have the constant cold sensation in my nose and throat when I breathe in. I have had mild anxiety before, but now with these new symptoms my anxiety has gone through the ROOF!
I've noticed that when I cough a bit, the cool sensation goes away temporarily, but it does come back a bit later. I've been having insomnia lately, so I don't know if that might be causing this cool air feeling too?
what gives me most comfort is just breathing in through my nose. the cool air sensation becomes much more mild, but not totally gone. I think both anxiety, lack of sleep, and heavy weight loss has contributed to the cool air sensation, but again not fully sure.
I'm trying EVERYTHING to help improve the symptoms (air purifier, humidifier, essential oils, candles, etc.) but nothing has had a direct effect yet. Did anybody try the Walmart oils method from a previous post a few pages ago? that person said that they had a actual results.
