Colonoscopy today

I had my first colonoscopy today. I'm 20 years old and have been getting admoninal pain and blood in stools. I was very nervous to say the least, not knowing any one of my age to have this done. I was given the Moviprep to clear me out and honestly, it was horrid! tastes like lemon sherbet and salt. I took the first litre the night before my procedure and I could not stop gagging! I was on the loo for about an hour and half and I don't mean to be crude but when it starts working - its like you're weeing out of your bum lol! The day of my procedure, I took the next litre in the morning, I found it a lot easier to drink it as I knew what I was expecting.

Going into the hospital, I was even more nervous. Once I got into the room where they do it, I was shaking but the nurses was very helpful and polite. Once I was given my sedation, I honestly cannot remember a thing, I don't know if it hurt as I don't remember (which is probably a good thing) Next thing I know, I'm waking up in my bed in a little room. I felt like I had drunk quite a bit of alcohol and was very groggy. My stomach could not stop growling and I was confused to whether it was wind or just hunger after not being allowed to eat for 24 hours. Anyway, I was given some tea and toast which was heaven! My bum is a little sore still, I'm passing quite painful wind and still have a bit of water coming out my bum which I'm assuming is quite normal after having a colonoscopy and not enough food to pass down just yet!

So my experience was better than I expected, I have to wait a week for my results as biopsies was taken so I'm still a little nervous on that side but the worst of it is done! I would just say I never want to drink Moviprep again though...

Carrie I am glad your colonoscopy experience was not a bad memory.  Mine was totally the opposite unfortunately.  Your experience is the way you should feel after having one done, quite woozy for a while and no pain or memory.  I really hope your biospy results are benign and can be treated with no long lasting effects.  I agree about the Moviprep it is ghastly to take and the results do make you a little sore for a while.  Hopefully, things will settle down in the next few days for you.  I wish you the best of luck with the results.

Thank you Jenny, sorry to hear yours wasn't a very good experience. I take it you didn't response so well to your sedation then?

Yes! I wish they would make it taste nicer for us all as it's not the best situation to be in anyways hah! Thank you, hope everything with you is all sorted.

ditto jenny - mine was painful and I was fully aware for the whole thing - I actually said to them "I don't think the sedation is working" - which they poo pooed! But I'm glad to have had it done - it sets my mind at rest RE bigger bowel problems than suspected IBS and also it was a big step for me - I've got to 44 and never had to have any hospital procedures - so i was very nervous!

Hi Adam.  Sorry you suffered too with the colonoscopy.  The sedation isn't always enough for some people and I do wish they still gave a stronger one which almost put you to sleep. I didn't expect to experience such pain as I did which was unrelenting through the whole thing.  Even though I  asked them to stop more than once they didn't seem to believe I could experience such pain.  Now I know why with this sensitivity I've been diagnosed with. At least your mind is at rest Re bigger problems but IBS is a big problem in itself for some.  You are certainly lucky to have got to 44 with no procedures.  Lets hope you don't ever have to have any more either!  Take care

Good luck with the biopsy results.

Did they say that you had Polyps? You can get them at any age. Our daughter had one when she was only six. Nowadays if you have polyps they keep an eye on them every few years to make sure that they don't get a chance to turn nasty.

No I didn't have any polyps, just took about 8 lots of biopsies, didn't feel a thing!

How is your daughter now? Hope she's okay, especially knowing she's got to have check ups every now and then.

Oo that sounds better than mine! I had to have 1 litre of the stuff after lunchtime the day before (which did then casue an elephant to p*ss out my backside!) and then again the following morning - another litre. Cack!

No it was because I referred to the diarrhoea before as feeling like an elephant was urinating through you!

they said everything looked good when they did mine. But they took biopsies(don't know how many)  even though there were no Polyps.

I guess they do that akll the time.

I had to do the 4 liters, but it wasn't that bad.

The RX came with a lemon flavor packet too.

First I measuured 4 quarts into the jug, and marked it at 1 quart, 2 quarts and 4 quarts. (I cheated it down to a gallon)

Then I drank about 3/4 of the gallon the night before, and drank the rest at 4:00 AM the next AM.

The instructions said to drink half the night before, and half the next AM, but the nurse told me I would be better off to drink about 3/4 the night before, and the rest the next AM. The doctor said everything looked good, so I assume I was cleaned out well.
