Hey guys I was diagnosed with UC in January after having a flexible sigmoidoscopy

They now want to do a colonoscopy

I didn't have any sedation for my sigmoidoscopy and just wondering how you all coped with the colonoscopy ? I am going to take sedation of they offer me it

Thankyou x

I recommend that you have the sedation, definitely. Will be over before you know it! You should have someone to take you home after just to be safe, however my experience was fine and I had no after effect whatsoever. Good luck with it 😀

I mentioned before the Guy's and St Thomas diet recommended for UC sufferers, it' s on their website. I find that really works for me.

What I discovered was that my 'healthy' diet was actually just about killing me. I ate everything I was supposed to, more than covered my 5 a day! Muesli, fruits, vegs, nuts, seeds, loads of fibre, brown bread, salads, brown rice - you name it and all of that was simply adding to my problems. Everything above was irritating my condition. Now I've switched to a low fibre diet, no seeds or nuts, no brown bread or brown rice. No pulses . All veg and fruit peeled and pureed and I feel so much better! I make sure any nutrients I might be missing are subsidised in another way. I also drink V8 veg juice each day. Infact, I'm enjoying eating a lot of things I thought I shouldn't ! Long my that continue!

Yes, all the foods you mentioned that added to your problems had the same effect on me.  I think I may take your advice to millie1986 about pureed food.  I just eat things I know dont irrate me which means poached egg, salmon, plain chicken, rice, pasta and the jacket potato without the skin!....gets a little boring

I've just had a colonoscopy a coupe of weeks ago following previous sigmoidoscopies / recent diagnosis.

They do recommend you take sedation (or they did to me). The colonoscopy is 45 mins ish where the sigmoidoscopy was only about 10-15.

The sedation is only "to make you foget" and doesn't completely knock you out.

    Hope it goes well. x

You are normally are given sedation, you can have it without but isn't recommended, I had it once without because I had to drive after, wasn't nice at all. The flexiscope does the lower part of the bowel so isn't as intrusive or uncomfortable but the colonoscopy goes high into the colon so you get more discomfort and if biopsies are taken it can be painful, but you won't recall any of it after sedation, the prep isn't nice but will be over pretty quick but you wont get a good sleep, unfortunately you will be drowsy then awake and its all done, no long sleep or dreaming!!

      Thankyou Steph

I'm a big scary cat the flex I actually pulled the sheet over my head

Take care snd thankyou for replying x

Take sedation......It is much more painful than the flexi as they need to pass the camera/tube around the bends of the colon and this is where it becomes painful.  Hope it goes well
