73-year-old man taking Lipitor for over 20 years two months ago I quit Lipitor and my numbers have doubled total cholesterol 314 one of them is 39 the other one 202 tri. Over 300

That sounds scary.  I don't understand the numbers you're quoting but a different numbering system is used in Australia, I think that's he US and maybe UK one?

Anyway, doubling the numbers in 2 months does prove statins work, the issue is whether the side effects you were having are something you want to live with?   I know personally that's a hard choice to make between quality of life and the possible (not definite) negative effects of stains.  I feel for you!

I assume you've tried the diet/exercise way to reduce cholesterol, and/or the psyllium husks I mentioned in an earlier post?

PS:  I assume also that you've tried the lower dose statins, because that does work for some people - didn't for me, side effects were just as bad and also as bad on non-statin cholesterol reducing medication.

Taking Q10 supplements with statins reduces side effects for some people because it's an enzyme which statins deplete - that didn't work for me either, but worth a try if you haven't already done so.

WEEK  3 ... MY  DIARY THE EFFECTS OF COMING OFF  stastins..

Feeling  more like myself better sleeping habits no more weird pains no fast heart beating no more nightmares  went to A,E hospital on Sunday due to the tingling feelings in feet and hands and painfull left  foot after 3 hours waiting   was told to take pain killers and prescribed cream  ibuleve gel started applying and pains started to get better....

The lady doctor was NOT happy with me stopping stastins and said it was my choice which i told her that I would rather have my health back instead of aching joints she checked my toes and said there was a  good blood flow and that she had heard the side effects of these so called wonder drugs but insisted she would take them if she had STENTS which i laughed and said you really dont know the side effects ..

If the cream you mentioned contains ibuprofen, which it would seem it does from the name, my gp and cardiologist have told me that NO-ONE WITH A HEART CONDITION SHOULD TAKE IBUPROFEN IN ANY FORM, orally is the worst but sprays and rubs and creams are also dangerous.

Of course, that leaves a lot of us who have arthritis in pain which is virtually untreatable except with strong painkillers, which have their own side effects.

My gp prescribed panadol osteo, up to 8 a day, which I thought too many give their side effects, but when I was on the statins I was in pain all the time whether I took panadol or not.   Panadeine forte with codeine worked, but that's not allowable long term.

Now I'm off the statins I only take 2 panadol osteo in the morning plus 2000 mg fish oil - hardly any pain at all now

Getting personal, did the statins affect your libidy?  Adversely I mean and if so, has that improved too?  Mine certainly has!
