Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

Just updating incase it can help me or someone else. I went to the ER on Thursday night because the pain had gotten to severe I was throwing up. I was given morphine & Zofran for the pain and GI cocktail (Maaloz Plus Extra Strenght suspension, Viscous Lidocaine liquid, and phenobarbital-belladonna, IVP pepcid, NS and Dilaudid. They did x-rays and cscan and nothing. He said I had GERD & constipation! I am on Colace, Miralax and Pepcid for treatment. I've had to minor signs of pain since then, but nothing major. I hope it was that, but I never felt constipated nor felt the acid reflex signs. I hope it cures it all, I've lost 5 pounds since then, I've only ate a little and I am scared to eat stuff. Lets see how much my bill is going to be since I didn't have insurance. I was just in too much pain to sit at home & take it anymore. Pain level was way, way above 10

oh, sooo sorry to hear that Gloria. I'm not getting the intense pain any more but I've found with the other pain if I hold an ice pack to the area it helps ease it. Also, when I got an attack on Friday night I grabbed 2 popsicles and ate them...worked like a miracle. Eased the burning feeling from the acid reflex and numbed everything else. Might be worth a try. Hope someone helps you soon.

Yes, I have those symtoms also. I had my gallbladder out about 6 yrs. ago. I have the pain and I cramp up under my ribs also. I am going this Friday to a Gastro Specialists to find out what the problem is!

Hi Angela please let us know what Gastro specialist says!  I am under a general surgeon still, different one that did the GB removal in January.  My GP won't wend me to a Gasto consultant just gives me more pain meds!  Which are now helping with the pain since the Gabapentin was brought in but I feel not me and swollen and sickly.  I have found out that porridge and eating a small amount does stop being sick though! Good luck Friday

I needed to have my GB removed when I was 16, but put it off worrying scars could ruin my modeling career, got it removed around 18. I am 24 now. I don't really have digustive issues either, I mean I go more frequently than I used to but its not bad or anything. Maybe a year after I kept having stomach pains, in the same place where my GB pain was, it will move to my back under my shourlder blade and down. The severe pain will come and go from day to day. Sometimes It will be a month before I have it, nothing has seam to set it off, its always random. And by far the worst pain ever. Everytime I want to go to the ER. I still have daily issuses, stomach cramps/pains they arent serve but they are thier and sometimes make it hard for me to do my daily tasks. I just want to lay down since my stomach hurts. Lately I haven't been able to eat too much and when I do I get sick. (the past two weeks). I always want to know what is going on. Why did I even get it removed if I still have terriable pains. I can't afford to go to the doctors. So I have no medical advice for ya.

Not sure if this will help any of you, but I just want to update you all on my progress. So, since May 1st, I have changed my eating habbits & taken my pills and I haven't had an episode! I am hopeing that it doesn't come back and that it was only a lot of acid build up. But, I think eating healthier & not drinking as much coffee and red meat really helped.

It may be a rogue gall stone in your bile duct. Had mine out two weeks ago and was readmitted last night in severe pain with nausea. They think that was the cause

Hi. I had my GB out and was still in pain for years. I was told by my GI that 2% of all GB patience still experience pain. Nope, not acceptable. I know my body and something is wrong. So then I was told that when the surgeon put the trocar through my abdominal wall just below my ribcage that it damage the nerves. I thought plausible, but still something else is going on.

I went to Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC and saw a specialist. I finally found someone who understood what I was going though and said I had Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction

(the sphincter muscle in the bile duct of the pancreas is too tight) and will not open to release bile needed to digest food and so I needed to have Sphincterotomy. They snip the muscle.  Well it unfortunately can have a side effects which is Chronic Pancreatitis and this will last for the rest of your life. I was in the hospital for months and to this day 7 years later I still am bent over in pain every time I eat or drink anything. The only treatment for me is opiate narcotic medication or to remove my pancreas and become a diabetic.

So proceed with caution. It may fix what you have or it may make your life a living hell. I wish you good luck and good health

    Namaste.

I had my GB removed 01/14/2014 and never experienced anything til last Thursday 06/19/2014. I was told on Tuesday 06/17/2014 at the ER that i had the stomach virus and i followed the rules to feeling better and by Thursday night around 11:30pm i had an episode...I SWEAR it was the same episode i would have when i had my GB atacks. I have no clue what it could be and where the hecks it came from but i am terrified. I am going to see my Dr. On Wednesday....lets see what is next! Has anyone experienced the same pain after having the GB removed?
