compression stockings

I guess this would have been discussed a thousand times, just wondered if 6 wks is the norm for keeping the compression stockings on for as that is what I have been told. I am quite active now 4 wks after partial knee op , on the static bike for 15mins walking without crutches for 30 mins.

Sleeping still a problem though I usually wake up every 2 hrs.

That's reassuring to know...because at the moment it neither looks or feels like my own leg

    Hi Robert

in my part of the country and under my Consultant, I didn't have to wear compression stockings. Had and was discharged with injections that I had for about a week. Had initial problems with bruising but nothing too dramatic and lots of swelling. Keep up the good work, sounds like you're cracking on

robert ... i am very envious!  you seem to be doing amazingly well.  i am also 4 weeks plus 3 and i can't do the bike yet as i don't have enough bend on the knee.  i do walk around at the office and at home without crutches but 30 mins?  ermmmm ... i don't think i would feel comfortable.

as for the sexy stockings ... if this is the result you get, keep wearing them.  i stopped after 3 weeks but still have to take a blood thinning tablet every night which works for me.

    good luck!

Britta, have you tried the bike with the seat a little higher so you can get a rotation, I started on the stationery bike cycling backwards first as it is easier then gradually managed to go forwards as the knee got used to the bend

hi robert -- thanks for the tip, my physio hasn't suggested it but good idea, perhaps i should ask him if i can give it a try?  i need to move progress forward, mainly for my own self-confidence.  i see him on monday, will have a chat with him.  he is rather conservative but i need to push myself as my 6 week meeting with my surgeon is looming.  this is when we discuss bending the knee manually under anesthetic.  GROAN!

    Hi Robert,

im in portsmouth and they told me to keep them on for six weeks too.

in my case, I do have varicose veins in the operated leg so I can see the added risk of clotting there.

having said that, though, I was told by my surgeon that my tibia wouldn't stop bleeding during the op, even with a tourniquet, so aim now undergoing clotting factor tests.

the great thing from this was that I didn't have to have the injections because they didn't want to encourage further bleeding.

Thanks for that John I am resigned to the 6 weeks now, not a big deal we hen I read of some of the other problems. At least I know what is coming when I have my other knee done, which I now intend to leave as long as possible. Hopefully get another year out of it.

Hi Robert, I had tkr 10 week ago I have been discharged from the hospital for 12 months, with no signs of dvt and 0 to 110 range , I only wore the stocking for 10 days as they were cutting the circulation off in my leg lol I've been fine  and have been quite active throughout, just the normal not sleeping very well,  but fine now I still sleep with a pillow under my leg as I find I sleep better , going back to work in three weeks xx
