Considering HRT

Hi I am seeing my go on Monday as have had enough!  I last had a period 7 years ago (am 57) and have been suffering for the last 2 years with terrible anxiety (for no reason) , hot flushes, thinning hair and low mood.

i always said I would never take HRT but have changed my mind - I think quality of life is more important!  Would welcome comments from anyone who thinks HRT will help - thanks.

Hi I totally sympathise with you there comes a point where you're just not enjoying your twilight years like you should. Once you've tried the alternatives sometimes you're only left with Hrt.It certainly made me feel like my old self if not better as I would have grumpy moods before Menopause.

A suitable low dose might be your best bet to start. Everyday is a risk in my opinion as accidents and illnesses happen regardless of Hrt.

    Hope you find something :-)

    Hi Sue,

I have been on HRT for 2 months and the anxiety and hit flashes are gone and I sleep again. My mood is still sad at times but I am hoping that will get better.

It stinks we have to go through this change and it is hard to lose sleep and have that anxiety where you feel your world is out of your control.

There was no other choice for me either. One down fall is the weight gain.

Caroline you do not feel like that anymore right from taking the HRT?

How long have you been on HRT?

    Hi Sue

There are so many different types of HRT, IE pills, pessaries, gel and patches etc that you will need to speak to your GP about your symptoms and if he/she is any good they will explain all options and possible side effects. I was lucky, after using an alternative, black cohosh for a while with good results, when it became ineffective the GP prescribed Premique low dose which worked within 4 days. Unfortunately it keeps being out of stock so was prescribed Kliovance which is just as good. Some ladies however go through several types of HRT before striking lucky. Let the forum know how you get on and good luck.

I did when I stopped taking my HRT for a short period. It's a very weird feeling.

Same here - I've been wringing wet with sweat and shivering.  Your body does some strange things withour hormones.

    Hi Sue,

Go for it. I have been on HRT for 9 years, I am 56.. I did come off last year for a couple of months but all the symptoms came back. As you say why suffer? I am on a low dose and feel great. I know I will have to come off eventually but while I am active and have a good quality of life I will keep taking them and my Doctor agrees.

      Hi Maureen

Thanks for your positive words!  Stuck the patch on last night (was worried it would come off in the bath but was ok!) - feel a bit "spaced out" today but apart from that, fine.  Hoping for good results!

You'll soon become an expert in finding the best spot to apply your patches.  Once in place, you can bath, shower, swim, anything you like without problems.  Give yourself a week or so for your body to get used to the hormones and you should start feeling a whole lot better.  Good luck.

Hello nina. I stopped taking my HRT last year after many years following a hysterectomy and oophorectomy. I was 62. Like you I suffered horrendous symptoms and regularly had to change the bedding on a morning. I was depressed, anxious and bad tempered. At the time I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and in a lot of pain. I went to see my lovely GP who without me asking asked if I wanted to be prescribed HRT again and obviously I said yes. Within 2 days I felt so much better and now I have no menopausal symptoms but the best thing of all is the pain in my joints has improved 100%. I agree, why should we suffer. I'm so pleased to hear your story and how it's improved your life.
