Constant bleeding - perimenopause? Hysteroscopy needed?

Posted , 121 users are following.

Hi,

I've had continuous bleeding for a few months - the period stops for a few days and then starts again, sometimes with clots.

I had hysteroscopy with biopsy about 1.5 years ago( had then some spotting between periods), didn't feel great for a month after that, and the results were ok, had an ultrasound a few days ago which is ok. Now the gynaecologist suggests another hysteroscopy. Is it necessary to have it? Will I be having them every year until it stops? Are there any other tests to make sure that its perimenopause and nothing sinister?

Thanks

Hi Everyone I was so relieved to find this thread. I have now been bleeding for 9 weeks, last week, it was no longer with clots and I was hoping that maybe it was finally going to stop, but this week, it's back with a vengeance as far as the clots are concerned, I am 51 and for the past year, my periods have been patchy, one every couple of months ago, I feel that hormones must be playing a part in this bleeding, as my breasts are really painful, and mine always got like this just prior and while on my period, have just had A mammogram and that all came back ok, as did my last smear test, I was already anaemic prior to this bleeding, I did read in this thread, that if your anaemic you may bleed more( Mother Nature, sometimes makes no sense), I have not yet seen my GP, as my husband had been going through stem cell transplant for lymphoma, and at first, I was hoping that it would stop, and then last week, I did think that it was beginning to show signs of stopping, but now it's heavy again with clots, I would much rather try medication before having anything invasive, has anyone else, had success on medication thanks Chell

I went through the heavy bleeding and had a procedure done called a uterine ablasion. The gyno uses a laser to basically burn out the lining of the uterus. It is done under light anesthesia and there was no problem with recovery. Most women never have period again and a small percentage have very light 1 to 3 days periods. You can just get by with a light days pad . I was one of the lucky one that got the light bleeding once a month! It was so easy though after the horrible life altering heavy bleeding before. I had this done about 6 years ago and am now going through menopause with some other issues but bleeding is not one of them.

Hi LMHO. I too went through the heavy bleeding and had a uterine ablasion May of 2014. You mentioned most women never have period again and a small percentage have very light 1 to 3 days periods. Well, I wished I fell in that category. The next month after the surgery, my period came back as normal and was only 3 days but over the last teargas increaeed back to 5 to 7 days . Clots also still there. Now my doctor put me on birth control. I started them the Sunday after my last cycle. I started week 3 of the pills and my cycle started then as well!! Clots and heavy bleeding. What is going on? I'm 47 and after blood test last week, was told that I've entered menopause phase. Cramping is unreal and started 4 days into this period. I thought the pills would regulate my cycle but it seems that is not the case. What else do I do? I take iron and vitamin supplements, eat healthy and exercise 3 times a week, but have not this week due to bleeding and cramps. My doctor said to finish these pills and then font take anymore then let him know how next months cycle does. In kind of frustrated. Any other suggestions?

I'm glad to read this. I've had a period for almost 3 weeks now and I'm going nuts. Im getting an ultrasound (internal), thyroid check, and possibly a biopsy of the uterine lining.  Im' glad to hear that others have had long periods too. I thought I was going nuts.

I had the exact thing happen to me at about 46 yrs old. I had completely normal periods my entire life. Then all of a sudden I just skipped a month. I was not pregnant, and the next month my period lasted for 2 weeks. It was not super heavy, but it was heavier than normal for me. The next month I was back to normal, then the next year the same thing happened again and this time it was super heavy with clots and lasted for 50 days. My blood level was very low and I had to have a unit of blood. My Dr put me on a low dose birth control pill and it did eventually work. It took a couple of weeks for it to stop completely, but it did. After that I have had very light periods with some spotting in between, but nothing major. I take the pill continuously, so I go sometimes 4 months without a period at all. The pill is very mild and I have no problem with it at all.

I bled for 50 days, before my Dr put me on a very low dose of birth control pill. I take it continuously and have no problems at all. Believe me, it is worth taking and not having to worry about bleeding constantly. My blood got so low when I was bleeding, that I had to have a unit of blood. I did have a vaginal ultra sound to make sure that nothing was wrong. My Dr told me that I can stay on the pill continuously until I'm around 52, without any issues. I love it. Sometimes I go 4 months with no period at all. When I do have a period, it is very light.

Don't give up on the pill. It took a few months for mine to really work. I take them continuously, and I do sometimes have a very light period about every 4 months. I could probably go up to a higher dose of the pill, but I don't want to do that, so I will just deal with a light period every few months. I bled for 50 days straight before I started the pill. I had to have a unit of blood. My Dr also informed me that taking the pill continuously is not harmful at all. I can take them until I'm around 52 yrs old.

Oh boy.  Im not liking this.  I have been going for 6 weeks now.  heavy then light for 2 then heavy again.  I have never had any issues before and was hoping to try birth control pills but I will be 53 in a few weeks.  I hope something can be done.  I'm in the bathroom every 15 minutes.

What ever came of this? Im having the same thing going on and it's giving me terrible anxiety. I had an ultrasound 2 days ago and was told this is just hormonal and keep taking the bc pill...which isn't helping at all. When I'm flooding heavy they tell me to take double or triple bc pills. Is this what anyone else was told to do? Isn't there anything else I can do to make this stop? I've been bleeding on and off, heavy to light, since Nov 24! It's so unpredictable that it interferes with everything. I can't live normally anymore.

Exact mirror image of me.  Except I’ve gone 5 months of spotting (including my normal period which is heavy) and about 4 days per month with nothing.  I’m seeing a Gynea next week but from this forum it seems really common.  I’ve been traumatised for 3 months about this appointment because I’m fearful in case I need a biopsy.  All my smears have been extremely painful xx

I was on continuous birth control because of prolonged and heavy bleeding in the past. After I turned 51, Dr made me stop them ( this was in April) to check my levels...FSH was 63, period never came back and I thought I was done. I turned 52 in August...then I had a light period in October, then Nov 24 started again and has been non-stop and all over the place as far as flow. This bleeding worries me. I've been taking bc pills to get it to stop, but they are having no effect. Dr said my body is fighting them and to keep taking them and it will level out. I know it's all hormonal but how much can I bleed and still be ok? Maybe it's fine and I'm overreacting....I'm a worrier and I have anxiety and panic attacks.....

My anxiety is through the roof! I just turned 48 and have had prolonged bleeding for going on 3 months now. I get a short reprieve of about 5-7 days and then it starts again. Just went for blood tests and ultrasound, which the intravaginal one was extremely uncomfortable and new to me. Have not had my next appt with doc but am nervous nothing can be done. I can't keep doing this for the next 7-10 years! I'll lose my mind and I am not an emotional person, however, "this" experience has had me an emotional wreck! I cry at least once a day! Glad to know I am not alone but still nervous about the outcome. I don't take the pill but do take supplements. Hope someone has an answer for this hormonal fury!

Can you get an ablation if you have uterine fiborids???

I have been wondering this myself. My blood tests all came out ok and my pap was good. Spoke with a surgeon who said, I "do" have a large fibroid but before he can do anything surgically, he has to do a biopsy. This makes me nervous knowing about the fibroid and also nervous about the amount of pain/discomfort from it. I have 3 more weeks to wait for this so I have put myself on a vegan diet in the hopes of helping my body to heal through good foods. Its also helping my waistline which is good because I struggle with that also. Anyhow, I will check back in a few weeks to share what I've learned.
