Constant bleeding - perimenopause? Hysteroscopy needed?
Posted , 121 users are following.
Hi,
I've had continuous bleeding for a few months - the period stops for a few days and then starts again, sometimes with clots.
I had hysteroscopy with biopsy about 1.5 years ago( had then some spotting between periods), didn't feel great for a month after that, and the results were ok, had an ultrasound a few days ago which is ok. Now the gynaecologist suggests another hysteroscopy. Is it necessary to have it? Will I be having them every year until it stops? Are there any other tests to make sure that its perimenopause and nothing sinister?
Thanks

The time of perimenopause is a difficult for every woman. To manage this problem you need to take some advice from your doctor. Apart from this you can include the healthy diet that contains fibers, calcium; you can also have some exercise that can help you to have good sleep and thus elevates your mood.

Until about a week ago, I bled for well over a month...complete with nasty clots. Pelvic US showed a 6 cm mass in my uterus so I had a biopsy done which thankfully, came back okay, as did the pap smear. My Hematocrit (colloquially known as red blood count for laypersons, so forgive my medical jargon lol as I am a healthcare person) is critically low, so with the constant bleeding, I literally felt like I was dying from fatigue, heart palpitations, and would become short of breath from the simplest of things. I started taking a slow release iron supplement about a month ago, along with vitamin C (which increases Iron absorption when you take them together) and it has only been in about that past four days that I have begun to feel even remotely better. Still very tired, but less short of breath and my energy is better than it was. Of course it helps not to be BLEEDING for weeks straight lol.
So for now, everything is a little better....but I fear the day I start bleeding again, because I can't afford to go another damn month straight....I may not even make it this time
Are you American? I know this is a British website but I'm American as well, and it seems the fear wrought by having no insurance is distinctly, an American problem. Other countries do a better job or caring for their citizens than this one does.
BTW, I'm 48. I am now facing the likely possibility of surgery as the only means to correct this problem if the prolonged bleeding starts again, and with my other health issues, I am scared to death of surgery
Sending good thoughts your way

My main symptom is shortness of breath which started more or less at the same time.As far as bleeding is concerned - its been going on and off for a few years. I usually go to the doctors once a year or so, and every time they suggest new hysteroscopy - I had one but am reluctant to have more as I had stomach aches for a month after the first one.

I don't want to take medications or have an ablation. The bleeding isn't super heavy, it just lasts for almost a week, then lingers very lightly for a few days more. I could wait this out if I was sure it was peri to blame.
I don't know what else to do to rule out any kind of malignancy. Should I do a hysteroscopy or D&C?

As I mentioned in reply to Polly, I had similar issues with heavy periods and ended up having a D& C which found I had a couple of fibroids that was one of the main causes of my heavy periods..I was also fitted with Mirena which also helped. My Dr said that due to my age ( at the time I was nearly 48, am now 50, soon to be 51) I was starting to go through Perimenopause, but also did blood tests to check hormone levels which were ok. At the moment since the symptome of Peri have kicked in my period sometimes lasts a week or on /off for 2 -3 weeks, but they re no way as bad as they used to be, they are pretty light. I don't regret having the D & C procedure done, as the Gynaecologist said it was the best decision I made..but in saying that everyone is different and what works for one may not work for everyone. Speak to your Dr / Gynaecologist and voice your concerns. Let us know how you go.
Hugs x
Anna

I had a simiar issue with very heavy periods, at one stage constant bleeding for nearly 4 months, I was dianosed with Endometriosis at 26. My Doctor said that I was starting Perimenopause, did blood tests tto check hormone levels that came back ok, gave me a referal for a Gynaecologstand suggested I have an ultrasound which showed some thickening of the Endometrium and my Gynaecologist suggested a D&C and the Mirena implant..After the proceedure she told me that I had made the right decision to have the proceedure & Mirena as there was so much blood & scarred tissue she had removed, she didn't think she was ever going to finish. That was back in 2013 and for a while my periods were alot lighter, still pretty regular but ok, it's only been around the last 6 months that the Peri symptoms have ramped up abit, my period recently has been on/off for the last 3 weeks, I'm tired all the time, moody, crying for no reason etc.
When you see the Dr next ask about Mirena, it did help me with my heavy periods, it may do the same for you.
Sending hugs
Anna
