Constant bleeding - perimenopause? Hysteroscopy needed?

Posted , 121 users are following.

Hi,

I've had continuous bleeding for a few months - the period stops for a few days and then starts again, sometimes with clots.

I had hysteroscopy with biopsy about 1.5 years ago( had then some spotting between periods), didn't feel great for a month after that, and the results were ok, had an ultrasound a few days ago which is ok. Now the gynaecologist suggests another hysteroscopy. Is it necessary to have it? Will I be having them every year until it stops? Are there any other tests to make sure that its perimenopause and nothing sinister?

Thanks

I'm thankful to have found this thread and to read stories that are similar to my own.  We just moved to Alaska about a month ago, and during all the packing for the move, I found myself bleeding VERY heavily and passing clots for 10 straight days.  My doc gave me an Rx for progesterone, which I started taking when my next period began, some 3 weeks ago.  I've been bleeding and passing clots on and off now for about 3 weeks.  Of note, I'm already severely anemic (last Hct was 26) so I was hoping the progesterone would make this period short and sweet.  It hasn't helped the way I'd hoped.  I had a pelvic US done Friday and am going to the GYN in the am for an endometrial biopsy.  I'm scared out of my mind because I have several risk factors for endometrial cancer, but after reading all these posts, I am beginning to be hopeful that this heavy bleeding coupled with severe anemia is just an unfortunate part of perimenopause.  At 48, I'm in the right age range.  I did not ask how my US looked because it done by techs.  Figured the doctor will tell me tomorrow.  Please wish me luck sad

Hi Rhianon, I'm sorry to hear you are having these problems. It does sound very much like it could be perimenopause causing this. I have been bleeding for 5 weeks now slowly getting heavier and passing clots. I had same thing last year and bleeding continued for 9 mth with very little break in between. Tests showed nothing nasty. I am back at doc's this afternoon as I've had enough of feeling like crap and being tired all the time. Hope your appt goes well, hugs ☺

Thank you for your well wishes.  It seems super heavy bleeding coupled with anemia and complete loss of energy is a rather common phenomenon during perimenopause.  But if this is something even worse (the big C, for example), I have to know asap.  I have a 7 yo son at home and a wonderful husband, neither of which I want to leave behind!

Hi there, I know exactly how you are feeling and I feel the same. Worry is an understatement. I feel so much for anyone going through this as it knocks the legs from under you. I hope we can all get some proper answers, I certainly don't feel I have yet x

I'm going to find out today how the US looked...and get the biopsy.  Hope they don't have to put me under because I have to bring my little boy with me to the appt.

You've been cleared of anything super scary, right?

Hiya, my docs never did a pap smear as it was 2 years since my last one so I feel concerned about that and after my internal scan my doctors said they never received the report only the pictures which apparently shouldn't of been, they seemed content with that but I was not so I still have a doubt about things. I now want a smear but am bleeding heavy 😕

stephanie, are you anemic as well?  My last hematocrit was done in June, and that one was critically low

Hiya they not done a blood test to check yet. I just come from docs now and they send g me for another ultrasound and give me 2 mth of norethisterone to get me through my holiday abroad ( should hopefully stop it) whilst on that. If it comes back with a vengeance they going probably refer me to a gyni. I taking spatone at min which is a natural iron supplement from boots chemist. X

With all your bleeding, a simple test to check for anemia hasn't been done?  That seems so odd.

Hiya, I had a blood test done last year when I had been bleeding for a couple of months but was suprised they never repeated it as I kept going for another seven month. I did have a blood count done for something else before my bleeding started again so I think they giving it longer before doing another blood count as I only been going 5 weeks this time, slowly getting heavier. Don't know how long it takes to become anaemic but I'm tired 😕

      I understand sad

Today's appt revealed I have a 6cm mass in my uterus the radiologist interpreted as a "likely fibroid" but I won't know the results until sometime wednesday.  Consequently, I'm very nervous and scared sad

Hiya Rhianon , oh my you poor thing such a worry as well having to wait. Stay positive it is most likely a fibroid as they say. It's good you are close to an answer as worrying and not knowing anything is terrible. Let us know what happens on Wednesday. Hugs to you x

Sending you good vibes for a fibroid, Rhiannon! I am hoping for good news for you.

Thank you so much.  My husband is still in another state finishing up preparations to sell the old house.  He's not able to come up here all that much because of his training coming up.  Thus, I am alone here in Alaska with my 7yo son, and the prospect of dealing with the results being bad just has my stomach in knots and my heart racing.  I've had lots of heart palpitations today alone, which may be caused by the anxiety or the fact my blood count is already very low.  I desperately cling to the idea I am less likely to have Cancer than I am to have a Fibroid, but I can't shake that mortal fear.  Realize also that I have an advanced medical background as a registered nurse who initially trained 3 years to become a physician before changing my mind.  I know WAY too much about all the potential things this could be and it scares the crap out of me sad  You ladies have been very kind.

Thank you sabrina.  I want very much to believe in the power of positive thinking...but I've seen some real crap happen to people.  I watched my own father turn his WHOLE LIFE around after getting distressing news from his doctor back in his mid 40s.  He went out and changed everything.  Within a few years he was in the best health of his life by age 50 than he had been some 20 years before.  This is man who was a former 4pack a day smoker (this means 80 cigs!) who wound up running a 26mile marathon at age 50!  We were all so impressed by his will to overcome.  But as it turned out, he got the brain cancer diagnosis when he was 51 years old and was dead 7 months later.  Despite all his hard work, he died anyway sad  I was 18 when that happened, and watching what happened to my father as a young girl really had a horrible impact on me.  My dad died young for all the work he put forth on behalf of his health, while my mother smokes, never exercises, drinks every day....and will probably live to her 90s.  Life isn't fair and it has made me wonder how much good I can possibly do for my own health when I'll likely get the short end of the stick just like my dad.  Sorry for this rant, but these are things I can't tell everyone else... sad

I understand. sad I feel like I'm doomed to be riddled with heart disease like my dad, or doomed to be riddled with cancer any time now and die way too early like my aunt. It's so easy to not think about the worst case scenario when we're younger, but it's all I think of these days. I need to see a doctor and just too scared! At least you are facing the issue whatever it may be, and able to make your move from there on. I need to get to that state as in this state I am just wasting my life and it's quite depressing. sad

Sorry for the hijack. It's a bad day today. sad let us know your news when you can.

Well the biopsy came back okay as did the pap.  However, I bled for over a month and the doc wants to get a Pelvic MRI to better visualize the area and see if putting in an IUD would be possible.

I have no desire to get an IUD, because with the mass already there, I tend to feel full down there and easily crampy.  Plus I have some real continence problems and I feel all of this would be made worse by an IUD.

That leaves endometrial ablation or hysterectomy.  But for now I'm blowing it all off until the bleeding starts again (I stopped about 5 days ago finally).

This whole thing has been EXTREMELY scary!!

Hi Mel did you find out the reasons for this ?

      Was it heavy bleeding ?

      I'm going through something similar

    • Posted

      I had a smear normal .

Had an ultrasound and I do have a small fibroid which could be the cause.

They said everything else looked normal.

This month I'm a week late so far !

      Not pregnant !

I am 52. My periods stopped for about 7 months. Then started again last month. I had what seemed a normal period then 2 days later it started again. I have now been bleeding for around 3 weeks. It is not too heavy but goes from light some days to heavier. I have no pain but a slight backache. I am feeling super anxious . I haven't seen a doctor in years. We moved to a foreign country and I kept putting off getting my regular health checks because of the language barrier. Then because I left it do long I was terrified to go. I was relived to come across this site as I have gained some reassurances. I see I'm not the only one going through this scarey bleeding.

I am sending a hug. I am scared too. Have been having the irregular bleeding spotting for months. I am going in today for a check up . Didn't want to but the anxiety over the whole thing is making me crazy.

I feel for you. Hang in there. What country are you in?

Thank you priska.sending a hug to you too. I'm in southern Spain. Maybe we can support each other through this. I can't get an appointment until next Friday.like you I'm crazy with anxiety. But I feel reassured by others stories. It's most likely our hormones on a crazy trip

    • Posted

Yes absolutely we can support each other. I think just being able to give our fears a voice helps.

I have read so much over the last few days Re this crazy bleeding. Myself I haven't even missed any periods yet but over the last few years they have def gotten heavier and in the last two mon the I have had a couple flooding incidents-what an eye opener THAT was.

Anyway from what I read since you haven't bled for a long time it seems that if another period shows up it it could be extra heavy and long. It's good you got an appointment for next week but I know the waiting is so hard.

I will check back in after I get done with mine later today.

. Yes looking at other replies when it shows up again it's with a vengeance. Yours seems very like some other ladies in here. Maybe hormones going a bit haywire and causing heavy periods and spotting. Like you I have read so much over last few days. sending you hugs for your clinic visit

Hi...I am turing 47 next month. Had regular periods always...then skipped a few a couple months back. Now Im goin on 4 plus weeks of constant bleeding. I finally called and asked my doctors office and without even asking who i was the receptionist tells me we usually dont see you until your having bleeding for 3 months. So that got me no where! Thank goodness for this site and all the info.

How are you doing? Has your bleeding stopped? Hope all is wellsmile

Hi I'm noticing all these replies are12 months plus ago but am so glad I've read them.....i now consider myself fortunate to be only2 weeks into bleed!! And not yet aneamic(although taking measures to combat this along the way). I hope you are now enjoying stress free post menopause in Alaska!...onward with the delights of perimenopause😕??

Hi Andrea! I just found this site, thread and I am going through the same thing. Just wanted to let you know there was someone current on here. smile I am guessing since no one else came back, it was all fine in the end! I hope you are doing well!!!

Hello, can anyone tell me how long this continuous bleeding lasts before it finally stops? One girl said 21 months, I can not take 21 months of this......

      Hi All!

I wanted to come back and update. I ahve been to the doctor who said all of this is normal. I have started on a nightly dose of progesterone cream that has helped with the bleeding as well as the sleepnessless and anxiety. I have also started to diligently take a multivitamin. I have found a definite correlation/causation between how much stress I am under and when I bleed. I will spontaneously start bleeding during the same meeting every week so I have really been trying to manage stress. The doctor also said exercise will help even out the stress emotions so my son and I have started mountain biking again. I don't want to be a ray of sunshine while everyone else is still suffering but last week I thought I was dying so hopeful this will help someone out there have hope smile

I'm new on this discussion but I'm glad you feel better. I'm 51 and since 3 weeks now I've experienced very light bleeding and I don't have proper period like before ! I started to worry until I found your stories that sounds like mine.

I m French and we don't have as good forums as yours in my country.

I'm seeing my gyne on July

Glad you are feeling better, can you tell me what cream you are using please? I hate docs but need to visit one again just tobesafe. I had every test possible a while back and they found nothing but I bleed all the time tbh it's probably been about two years now with just a few short breaks. I took transamic acid last time it was heavy and came off for two weeks then started up again and since then haven't stopped. It's pretty worrying and annoying.
