Constant forced belching, feeling of air stuck in chest/throat (Acid Reflux/GERD diagnosed).

Hi All,

This is my first time doing this so I want to try to be as detailed as possible, as I have gone through several doctors and am simply not satisfied with my current situation and honestly don't know what else to do.

It all started about one year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER after about 2 days I was having a hard time breathing, always feeling like I was short of breathe. He gave me a inhaler which did not help, then after a few days my symptoms went away and I had this feeling of air trapped in my chest/throat and I was constantly forcing myself to burp in order to relieve these symptoms. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, with whom essentially determined and diagnosed me with some gastritis and GERD/Acid reflux.

Tests I have done:

- upper endoscopy (showed some gastritis/inflammation and acid reflux)

- 2 stool tests to check for h. pylori and other bacterium (both negative)

- esphogeal manometry and (2) 24hour pH tests (one without nexium and second time after maxed on nexium, twice a day. showed I was swallowing a lot of air and had acid reflux)

- swallow test? forgot what it's called but I drank liquids and they saw how it went down through xray.

Nothing has helped. I was prescribed prilosec, nexium, etc with no relief. I still take 1 nexium a day now as when I stopped, the forced belching would bring acid up and burn my chest/throat.

My doctors are now trying to prescribe me Zoloft in order to "suppress" my brain and feeling these symptoms, but I am hesitant as I assume this would only mask the problem, even if it worked.

I just CANT GET THIS FEELING TO GO AWAY. I am constantly belching, my chest is extremely tight, etc. Is it anxiety? I don't feel anxious.

ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP... THANK YOU.

Tony

I have found stress and digestion (and how well we breathe then) are all interconnected. Caffeine can affect/exhaust adrenal glands. Coffee and carbonated drinks (pop or alcoholic beverages) will sometimes set me off with the burping/difficulty breathing or acid reflux thing when I am already feeling more stressed than usual or sleep deprived. I squeeze half a lemon in water every morning for a while (alkalizes and cleanses the body) and omit caffeinated/carbonated drinks for a while and then have decaf if I really want that coffee taste on occasion. And slow down a little. Mentally relax for a minute or so before eating. No need to panic...you may want to consider a high quality vitamin D, magnesium and L-Theanine from a health food store to cope with this. Good luck!

    Hi tony,

I am having the same symptoms and wanted to know if you are feeling any better and if you determined what the cause was. Do you feel a pressure feeling in your breastbone? I get that and the lump in my throat and I am constantly burping. All the doctors keep saying it’s anxiety and depression and want to put me on medication to treat that but I feel like the physical symptoms happened first and then I got the anxiety.

    Hi Tony,

I get the extreme belching throughout the day and i am omeprazole. I got the the uncomfortable breating where its like i need to breathe more. Omeprazole gives me good days although i do have bad days in which i struggle. Its interesting to see that many people are suffering from the same.

I find my self thinking about it a lot but i believe anxiety is a part of the problem. I think when i have good days i am less focussed on the breathing aspect which is like the main concern for me. Omeprazole does help the belching but like it has been discussed there a certain triggers. The food aspect is also a hard one as i find myself hungry but not being totally free and eating.

Its also interesting that someone has mentioned that the breathing could be hyperventilation and adding to the symptoms of belching by taking in too much air. I am due to give a stool sample 2 weeks after my omeprazole but also feel a gastroscopy could help with the anxiety aspect.

Has anyone been successful at elimanting all the symptoms all together?

Hi, stumbled across this reply looking for anyone who seemed to be suffering / suffered with symptons to my own.

Constant feeling of trapped gas / wind.

Constant feeling of something (like a ball) in my throat

Constant feeling of intense nausea - typically worst in the mornings

Unable to exercise - due to sick feeling in the mornings, and shortness of breath feeling

Been suffering with this for over two years - GP's at a loss to explain it and endoscopy came back fine.

I've been taking variants of omeprazole for the duration. Whilst seemed to be effective to some degree initially - they've become less and less so.

      thanks for listening

      Ben

I have been suffering with this on a daily basis. The only thing I have found to help is raw carrots (leave the skin on), and Kombucha. Relives my bloating and gas.

Hi Tonyjyoo, have you heard of or tried traditional chinese medicine (TCM)? I experience similar symptoms in terms of the burping and a weird feeling the throat and chest. I went to see a TCM and gave me some herbal medicines to take. TCM is base on the principals of 'balancing' the organs functionality and dealing with the root cause of the problem.

I feel that my symptoms improved greatly and although I am still having these symptoms, I am able to deal with them better. Maybe you can give it a try (if it is available in your country or region).

Btw I am from Singapore. Hope that this can help you in dealing with the tight feeling in chest. All the best!

    Hallo Tony,

I am Vikranth. I have the same symptoms. I have also having pain in neck. I am afraid whether it might be lung cancer.

Can you give me suggestions to solve this problem and some signs to find what it is?

Hi everyone, I have had so many of the  same Symptoms everyone is talking about. All the meds and the Dr. visits and test. I know everyone needs help and this is not the way to live. I want to share what has helped me the most. I am a Christian first of all and believe in healing. I have mistreated my body over the years with fast food and I have allowed stress to enter into my life. I have searched for all the answers Naturally and Spiritually. I must say it has been a fight!!! I have found peace through it all by getting into Gods word and claiming wisdom and understanding into what is going on with my body! I have found when I feel the worst if I will pray and speak the word over myself I will get relief... I know how this must sound goofy to people who don’t believe but I feel your pain and anxiety and I feel the need to help! The word says “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind”.  I have found in my own life when I feel like there is no hope and I will have to live like this the rest of my life, FEAR will creep in and anxiety is not far behind. But I no longer have to deal with this spirit and I take control of my mind and negative thoughts and I get through it every time! I am listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit which is God’s words and I am making better decisions. We should not have to live life like this! The devil comes to kill, steal and destroy and I call him out on this now and say no more!!! It’s time to fight back and take what Christ has done for us and that is Healing and Wholeness in our bodies. I pray this will help someone! Remember, the things that are seen are temporary and the things that are not seen are forever.  Speak to your mountain!!! God Bless,

Hello, I think I have found the solution.

I have the exact same symptoms that everyone is describing here and I wasn't sure what the problem was.

I am a fit and healthy 30 year old who drinks plenty of water, exercises 5 days a week, gets 8 hours sleep every night and is not stressed but have the same problems.

I too was frantically googling and looking for answers and I've heard a lot of people getting ambiguous answers from their doctors.

All you need to know is FODMAP (google it).

They are sugars in foods that are poorly absorbed by the small intestine and ferment by bacteria producing gas. (Hence the urge to burp or release air)

Basically, for 2 months I went on the 'low FODMAP' diet, or not eating any trigger foods, and the symptoms disappeared.

Then I slowly reintroduced each food category over 6 weeks to know what makes me react.

It has honestly changed my life.

For a lot of people the triggers are onion and garlic amongst other foods but everyone is different. A lot of it seems bizzare at first eg Brocolli is fine but cauliflower can be bad. So it's not just to do with healthy eating.

There are some great books out there and a great app by Monash University.

    Anyway, I hope this helps.
