Constant forced belching, feeling of air stuck in chest/throat (Acid Reflux/GERD diagnosed).

Hi All,
This is my first time doing this so I want to try to be as detailed as possible, as I have gone through several doctors and am simply not satisfied with my current situation and honestly don't know what else to do.
It all started about one year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER after about 2 days I was having a hard time breathing, always feeling like I was short of breathe. He gave me a inhaler which did not help, then after a few days my symptoms went away and I had this feeling of air trapped in my chest/throat and I was constantly forcing myself to burp in order to relieve these symptoms. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, with whom essentially determined and diagnosed me with some gastritis and GERD/Acid reflux.
Tests I have done:
- upper endoscopy (showed some gastritis/inflammation and acid reflux)
- 2 stool tests to check for h. pylori and other bacterium (both negative)
- esphogeal manometry and (2) 24hour pH tests (one without nexium and second time after maxed on nexium, twice a day. showed I was swallowing a lot of air and had acid reflux)
- swallow test? forgot what it's called but I drank liquids and they saw how it went down through xray.
Nothing has helped. I was prescribed prilosec, nexium, etc with no relief. I still take 1 nexium a day now as when I stopped, the forced belching would bring acid up and burn my chest/throat.
My doctors are now trying to prescribe me Zoloft in order to "suppress" my brain and feeling these symptoms, but I am hesitant as I assume this would only mask the problem, even if it worked.
I just CANT GET THIS FEELING TO GO AWAY. I am constantly belching, my chest is extremely tight, etc. Is it anxiety? I don't feel anxious.
ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP... THANK YOU.
Tony

I've had this same problem for years, I wouldn't take the Zoloft if I were you, I have days its ok then get another flare with it, stress I've learned will make this worse, I wish there was a clear cut answer but I haven't found one, the only thing I found was take something like gas x this helps after about two hours. if you fine the cure I sure want you to share it with us.

This started with me May 2017 from a sore throat. It felt like I had a constantly lump in my throat that would not go away it then progressed to me experiencing a feeling of something trapped in my esophagus. I have a feeling that I have trapped wind in my chest and when I try to get wind up all I do is regurgitate food. At first it was only certain foods like chips, coleslaw and onions but now it is everything I eat, bringing up food constantly all day everyday! I can never enjoy a meal no matter what it is! My doctor prescribed me Omeprazole when I first when to see him. This did go away for a few months but has come back again worse. When I told him I only get relief sometimes now and it doesn’t fully work he prescribed me Esomeprazole. I have been taking this and have no relief at all and he told me this was stronger. I went for a meal with my mum last night and constantly brought up the food not even 15 mins after finishing the meal and to the point I was sick and it give me some relief from my chest and the exact same this morning at breakfast. The food isn’t even going to my stomach it’s just sitting in my wind pipe which makes me believe that is causing the problem. I have no heart burn at all. I need help I can’t go on like this anymore it’s driving me insane and making me upset. I am going to go back to my doctor and tell him I want test done to resolve this. I do also take peppermint oil capsules and peppermint tea which do help a bit but I need a long term solution. I did read that anxiety is a factor too. I would sometimes stress but would this cause these long term affects? Any comments or recommendations would be much appreciated. Sorry for the long post, thank you.

Hey, how did this pan out for you?
I've trawled the site for something that sounds like i'm going through - and your symptons and story is identical to mine.
i have had this for 2 years now, and like you when the Dr first put me on omeprazole - it seemed to work for months.
Then less so, they put me on stronger variants of the drug.
Nothing has been effective since.
And my symptons are now so bad, more so in the mornings, that I am fit for nothing until at least mid-day.
Whereas I used to be very fit and workout / run daily - I now can't get the energy to do anything as I feel too nauseous to even consider it.
Endoscopy carried out - no findings.

Have many of the same problems reported here, last night I had serious belching and couldn't wait to get my appointment with a GI specialist, he said the belching could be coming from breathing in too much air.
After the appointment, I reflected about this, my wife says I snore at night, throughout the day I normally breath through my mouth more than my nose, according to recent searches I've made breathing through your nose only is way more healthier.
See this Link about breathing through your nose: https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/11/24/buteyko-breathing-method.aspx[/b]
I'm not a Doctor of course but after reading this article and breathing though my nose for most of the day today my belching seams to be alleviated somewhat, in short it worth more research on my part.
Hope this helps, God Bless. Ben

If these are the signs you are having then problem is NOT GERD....its probably due to SIBO ...where you have bacteria in small intestine in excess amount which are not supposed to be in that excess and which have travelled from colon. ( Ideal number of bacteria in small intestine is less than 10 thousands per ml fluid , anything more is SIBO, colon is supposed to have 100 million bacteria per ml ).
Its relatively new disease or may be research is not enough ....its definitely hard to conquer... surprising thing is so called experts (Gastroenterologists)have difficulty to diagnose this problem. They mostly seem to miss this condition from your story of symptoms .....because GERD and SIBO both can have reflux.....in SiBo when food is fermented , gas produced in small intestine, duodenum or jejunum, forcefully travels up in stomach and then esophagus and then mouth...pushing some of the digested food with acid in small intestine with it to the upward direction....which makes you feel that gas is trapped . Hope i make you understand.....
Please do Hydrogen breath test for sibo or even more sensitive test endoscopic duodenal or jejunal fluid culture

Hi, stumbled across this reply looking for anyone who seemed to be suffering / suffered with symptons to my own.
Constant feeling of trapped gas / wind.
Constant feeling of something (like a ball) in my throat
Constant feeling of intense nausea - typically worst in the mornings
Unable to exercise - due to sick feeling in the mornings, and shortness of breath feeling
Been suffering with this for over two years - GP's at a loss to explain it and endoscopy came back fine.
I've been taking variants of omeprazole for the duration. Whilst seemed to be effective to some degree initially - they've become less and less so.
Just wondering if you think this could be SIBO too?
thanks for listening
Ben
