Constant forced belching, feeling of air stuck in chest/throat (Acid Reflux/GERD diagnosed).

Hi All,

This is my first time doing this so I want to try to be as detailed as possible, as I have gone through several doctors and am simply not satisfied with my current situation and honestly don't know what else to do.

It all started about one year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER after about 2 days I was having a hard time breathing, always feeling like I was short of breathe. He gave me a inhaler which did not help, then after a few days my symptoms went away and I had this feeling of air trapped in my chest/throat and I was constantly forcing myself to burp in order to relieve these symptoms. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, with whom essentially determined and diagnosed me with some gastritis and GERD/Acid reflux.

Tests I have done:

- upper endoscopy (showed some gastritis/inflammation and acid reflux)

- 2 stool tests to check for h. pylori and other bacterium (both negative)

- esphogeal manometry and (2) 24hour pH tests (one without nexium and second time after maxed on nexium, twice a day. showed I was swallowing a lot of air and had acid reflux)

- swallow test? forgot what it's called but I drank liquids and they saw how it went down through xray.

Nothing has helped. I was prescribed prilosec, nexium, etc with no relief. I still take 1 nexium a day now as when I stopped, the forced belching would bring acid up and burn my chest/throat.

My doctors are now trying to prescribe me Zoloft in order to "suppress" my brain and feeling these symptoms, but I am hesitant as I assume this would only mask the problem, even if it worked.

I just CANT GET THIS FEELING TO GO AWAY. I am constantly belching, my chest is extremely tight, etc. Is it anxiety? I don't feel anxious.

ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP... THANK YOU.

Tony

I think it could possibly be anxiety I also get these symptoms when I think and about it or it can come all of a sudden. It usually goes away when I am not thinking about it.

Great post and like others have said it's nice not know it's not just me that has experienced these episodes. Mine started all the way back in 1996. I was sitting on a couch over at a friend's watching a horror film and nearly fell off the sofa with what felt like chest pains in that it seemed like I'd skipped a few breaths breathing and was trying to catch up and this in turn made me clutch my heart. I literally slipped down the sofa and thought I was having a heart attack. After a few seconds of dizziness and feeling a little bit odd in myself things got back to normal but there were feelings around my heart area which just didn't feel right. The situation and what had occurred affected me and I was mulling over what it was. Could it be the fact I smoke. What about drinking since I had a few that night too. Whatever happened scared the he'll out of me and I never wanted to experience it again. After that episode , this became a regular occurrence for me over the years with breakouts occuring mainly at night whilst in bed. I'd get this happening at least 2-5 a month. Out of nowhere, from what felt like being alseep I'd next be sitting up in bed clutching my heart trying to breath. Once I burped a handful of times everything went back to normal. I thought it couldn't be a heart attack as that just doesn't happen, but why was I having to burp to get air? I visited doctors over the years and did as much research as possible but nothing was ever solved i was just told I was healthy... My episodes seem to more often than not come on the same night or the following night after having a few beers. I did also smoke a fair few but established that when id had drunk anything very fizzy or bubbly including lager i would normally get an eposide within a day ir so. Not always but most of the time so this had to have something to do with it. But at the same time there have been loads of occasions when ive drunk that i would never get this feeling around my heart.

I did find using acid reflux tablets seemed to help but after researching acid indigestion, this affects more the chest area than feelings associated with heart and not being able to breathe. After some years of not having any episodes, I have had one of the worst weeks recently for pains and feelings around my heart and having to burp to relieve pains, but this time my episodes have occurred during the day rather than evening. I currently use a vape pen as hardly ever smoke and wasn't sure if this was maybe triggering something, but I've used the same pen for over a year and havn't had any previous issues, so now I find myself wondering why these feelings have got worse. I do have a lot of stress in my life but don't go to bed worrying about things or stressed out. Life is stressful for most people and I actually thrive on stress. Just wish I could find an answer as I don't want this to lead onto further health issues the older I get.

    Hi Tony,

I have just read your story and wow it’s practically the same as what has been happening to me. Mine started a year ago I had all sorts of symptoms dizzyness headaches, chest pains, short of breathe, weird feeling in my throat like I’m being choked.  I’ve had x rays, bloods, endoscopy and echocardiogram all came back normal and they also told me it was anxiety. Now fast forward I’m still not better still having lots of symptoms but really struggling with chest pain and stomach issues and the weird feeling in my throat also my mouth gets tired when I eat and short of breathe, Ive had another echocardiogram, barium swallow and I’m hoping to get an endoscopy at my next appointment. I just don’t know what is going on and it scares me to be honest. Have you had any answers with this as I see this is quite an old post.

This stuff was happening to me for maybe a week but I managed to control it with carrot juice I loved it the first two days and absolutely hated it on the third day I’m pretty sure I have or had stomach  ulcer because it runs in the family but idk just my experience I still have it when I try highly acidic food and very hot stuff

I just started experiencing this three months ago. verbatim, all our symptoms match. I get really anxious when i can't force a burp out and its even caused me to have a lower quality of life the past three months. Having a motility and PH test done pretty soon. Hoping this is all just GERD but its looking to be like its not the case and it worries me everyday. if anyone reads this and finds a treatment, please for the love of god let us know

Hi. I had acid reflux for 5 years. Common treatment do not solve my problem. Ultimately, doctors tell me the root of your problem is nervous. I came to the psychiatrist and after treating different medications, I finally got treated with "Nortriptyline".

      Hi Alex,

I had acid reflex (GERD) for a few years, I do not believe in taking drugs. I have eventually controlled it by making and drinking kefir. Acid reflux is too little acid in the gut, doctors think it is too much and give drugs to lower acid instead of increasing.

i am having the same exact symptoms and mine started this past November. so ive been dealing with it for about 3 months. i was diagnosed with GERD a long time ago so i have taken protonix and now i currently take dexilant 60 mg. medication like that doesnt seem to work. i think im going to start weening myself off of it and try hcl supplement to see if that relieves anything. but i have tried dcl, d-limonene, mastic gum, etc. with no relief or results. i have constant burping and the burps seem to get caught in my throat or upper center part of stomach and they sit there until they decide to come up. i am a healthy 27 year old and eat pretty healthy and drink plenty of water but lately ive had to drink coca cola or pepsi in order to help me burp and clear out the air to provide me a little relief. it is an ongoing problem. over the past 6 months, i have had 2 endoscopies, a colonoscopy, ct scan, mri, esophageal manometry and tons of blood work for autoimmune, thyroid, etc. all came back normal.

however, when i had my colonoscopy done, they took a stool sample and i tested positive for giardia and cryptospordiam parasites and camplyobactor bacteria infection. i have been on 3-4 rounds of medication treatments in 2 months for all this. my symptoms are not better. i am not sure if all my infections caused this upper GI problems or not. i also regurgitate food that i ate back up to the back of my throat when i burp and i have to reswallow it. sometimes it feels like some of the food doesnt go back down, it may feel stuck in the back of my throat or chest or sit in the upper of my stomach. i am desperately trying to find answers and solutions as it is miserable going through this. i do not want to go through it forever, i want my life back! i have been thinking of seeing an esophagus specialist out of state. if there are any updates on anyones case on this thread please post!!

      Hi Tiffany,

I used to burp all the time, regurgitate, feel like something was stuck in my throat, had a feeling of sickness. I had this problem for two /three years, I knew going to a doctor would be pointless as they can only give drugs which either make it worse or create other problems and will never solve the issue.

I started making kefir and that has resolved the problem. I bought kefir grains from amazon and drink a glass everyday. Kefir is a powerful probiotic and as I used to buy a natural yogurt I thought my flora in the gut would be pretty good but no, as I drank really big glasses thinking the more the better I suffered a die off reaction after about three days which lasted for a month! I did learn you start with a tablespoon and build up slowly.

It did not take long to get into a routine of straining the grains and putting them in a clean jar, fill with full cream milk and leave for at least twenty four hours to see if it is ready. I prefer it put straight in the fridge and always keep two or three 500ml jars ready in the fridge.

This has worked for me, I have been drinking kefir for just over a year.

i will look into kiefer. ive never heard if it. i saw on amazon they only sale it by the tablespoons? is there a certain brand you buy? also, instead of regular dairy milk, can you use like cashew or almond milk? so all your symptoms went away? how long did it take for them to go away? do you take any other supplements or medications? sorry for all the questions, i'm just desperate at this point trying to get my life back.

      Hi Tiffany,

It did not take long for the GERD to resolve itself. I also had borborygmi which in laymans terms is gurgling stomach, it was really loud and I had it most of the day, it would keep me awake at night.

Kefir grains are a live organism when in full fat milk they grow and multi ply, they need the fat, it helps them ferment into a healthy natural probiotic.

You can use goats milk, reading online people have had inconsistent results with almond milk. If you do not want to use milk they sell water kefir grains, you cannot mix them. As the grains grow quickly you do not need loads of grains so a tablespoon is plenty. They should also send details on how to use them and reactivate them.

    hey all

its been a while since i posted and i know we have all been through so much. For me its been finally concluded that it is anxiety and some gastritis on the left of of my stomach. i was taking omeprazole for relief for approximately 10 months but now have stopped. i used to get chronic belching and acid reflux. I was referred to a clinical psychiatrist and he referred me to a CBT specialist after I had a ECG and a gastroscopy. i found after i had all these my belching came from my mouth breathing as i felt i was not breathing properly this is as a result of anxiety. Nose breathing helps me control the belching as i am not taking on board extra gases when they are not needed. i would urge everybody suffering the same as me to see a psychologist as only then i feel you will get better in m opinion.

      Hi hawk,

Do you panic when the burping doesn't happen or how do you managed the situation while you are eating when you need to do forced belching.

      Hawk,

I had terrible reflux, felt like I had something in my throat, felt sick, terrible loud stomach gurgling, it would keep me awake. I have controlled all these symptoms by drinking kefir everyday.

I bought some grains from Amazon read lots on the internet, it is a powerful probiotic, so powerful you need to start slowly a tablespoon per day, every two/three days build up until you are drinking a glass per day.

It takes five minutes of my day to strain put some grains in a new jar, pour on full fat milk. No tablets which I would never take anyway, just a healthy cure, with a pleasant drink.

my guess is that you are a mouth breather like me and take in excess gas which needs to be excreted from the body i.e. through belching. Try to use the nose for breathing and the mouth for eating. Also i would suggest to do some mindfulness exercises. It helps you mentally and thus your are going to be more calmer and relaxed. When your in a panic you will what i used to do and often still do is mouth breathe

Thanks Hawk, can you please suggest where can i find the mindful exercise, because we can see many websites providing mindful exercises, which one will be the best for us.

Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world by Mark Williams its available on Amazon.

i have been doing it but due to personal reasons i stopped but i started again recently.
