Constant forced belching, feeling of air stuck in chest/throat (Acid Reflux/GERD diagnosed).

Hi All,
This is my first time doing this so I want to try to be as detailed as possible, as I have gone through several doctors and am simply not satisfied with my current situation and honestly don't know what else to do.
It all started about one year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER after about 2 days I was having a hard time breathing, always feeling like I was short of breathe. He gave me a inhaler which did not help, then after a few days my symptoms went away and I had this feeling of air trapped in my chest/throat and I was constantly forcing myself to burp in order to relieve these symptoms. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, with whom essentially determined and diagnosed me with some gastritis and GERD/Acid reflux.
Tests I have done:
- upper endoscopy (showed some gastritis/inflammation and acid reflux)
- 2 stool tests to check for h. pylori and other bacterium (both negative)
- esphogeal manometry and (2) 24hour pH tests (one without nexium and second time after maxed on nexium, twice a day. showed I was swallowing a lot of air and had acid reflux)
- swallow test? forgot what it's called but I drank liquids and they saw how it went down through xray.
Nothing has helped. I was prescribed prilosec, nexium, etc with no relief. I still take 1 nexium a day now as when I stopped, the forced belching would bring acid up and burn my chest/throat.
My doctors are now trying to prescribe me Zoloft in order to "suppress" my brain and feeling these symptoms, but I am hesitant as I assume this would only mask the problem, even if it worked.
I just CANT GET THIS FEELING TO GO AWAY. I am constantly belching, my chest is extremely tight, etc. Is it anxiety? I don't feel anxious.
ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP... THANK YOU.
Tony

sorry didn't finish! i was giving life to vain imaginations. i was in soo much fear and then anxiety would set in. what was nothing became something or what was little became big. if i just changed my diet and watched what i ate and did not allow my negative thoughts to take over when i felt something then it would go away! i started taking control of my thoughts and realized i was FINE! i gradually saw less and less symptoms. Fear is not good! WE WERE not created to live in fear! F. E. A. R. - False, Evidence, Appearing, Real...
ALL I can say is I Trust GOD and took control of my my life!

Hi,
I am wondering if this could be the same issue and if anyone has had any luck with stopping it?
At first i thought i had shortness of breath, because of the feeling like i couldnt get enough air/ my regular breathing wasnt satisfying me and then feeling like i need to burp and trying to force myself to do one, which can take a while trying to get one. This would never be a big gassy type burp, just a small silent one but it would always give me the relief, sometimes just for a few mins, sometimes longer. This seems to be happening a few times daily right now and its so uncomfortable not feeling like im not getting enough air.
breathing tests came back fine, blood test were 'satisfactory'. no correlation to exercise, time of day, feeling anxious. its completely random and in fact stopped for a year and its just recently came back.
i dont feel any pain in my chest or throat like some of you mention. help! 😦

Hey Tony,
I know it's been a long time since your original post, but I too have some of these symptoms. How have you been doing? Have you found the cause? I have acid reflux and IBS, but I also have a jaw problem that causes me to not chew my food well enough and I know I swallow a lot of air which causes a lot of discomfort. I have to force myself to burp, which as a woman I'm always worried someone will hear me and could be quite embarrassing! I'm always worried that by me forcing the air out that I might injure my stomach or diaphragm. I also have sleep apnea, so I'm sure that doesn't help matters any!
Hope you're doing better!
Kind regards,
Wendy

hi Denise, you have described perfectly what I am currently going through for the last 6 months, with the addition of a cough which happens more after eating or talking. does anyone else have the cough along with the forced burping. anxiety was also suggested to me, I dont feel anxious but under the current circumstances with covid maybe unconsciously I am!

Hi @tonyjyoo , May I ask if you are still feeling the discomfort in your chest? I've recently started feeling like I have a persistent ball of air stuck in my chest and I've forced myself to burp so much that I think I've caused some bleeding my throat.
If you have managed to mke it go away, can you share how long it took and what you did?

Wow!
This thread is amazing! I literally read it through last night.
My story is that I've been having this awful burping issue ever since I had my gallbladder removed last year.
Basically, as soon as I eat/drink anything, I burp. That's the easy part. Then comes the feeling of bloating and fullness and these small little burps that drag on for hours. I get the gurgling noise in my throat too and feel like air is working its way up. Sometimes, I force the burps to come out by trying to massage my chest/throat or trying to contract my abdominal muscles. That usually only ends up aggravating my acid reflux.
I had an upper endoscopy after the op so presume if I had a hiatal hernia that I would have been told. My diagnoses are bile reflux gastritis and functional dyspepsia. The burping issue is absolutely miserable and is ruining my quality of life.
Oh - one more thing that I haven't seen mentioned. Whenever I eat or drink something I feel as if the liquid/food is just kind of sitting there in my stomach. This precedes the fullness and the burping. I've been tested for gastroparesis. I haven't officially received the results yet but looking at the images on the CD they gave me I'm pretty sure the emptying study was negative. My feeling is also that my motility issues are in my esophagus or at the entrance to my stomach. My gastro has mentioned that he thinks I have impaired gastric accommodation which he describes as a problem that the stomach has trying to "receive" food. He thinks it's vagal mediated and related to damage I experienced during my surgery.

I had the same symptoms but probably worse, which went on for more than a year. I had to leave business meetings due to shortness of breath, went to urgent care for nebulizer treatments, used inhalers and saline nose spray constantly, took all the antacids available and NOTHING worked. I then tried several different diets - Whole 30, Acid Watcher's, etc.. Some helped a bit and offered limited relief until I had lunch with a friend suffering from IBS. He suggested I try the low FODMAP diet (commonly prescribed to IBS patients but not LPR or GERD) which gave me significant relief after about a week and completely solved the problem over the course of the next few months. No idea why it works and no doctor suggested I try it but it totally worked for me. I went from constant misery to symptom free within a few months. I may be the only one out there but I tend to doubt it. Please try it and let me know. It takes about a week to start feeling any different but if you stick to the diet it may work for you as well as it has worked for me.

i have a similar problem! ITS BEEN 7 MONTHS nearly that ive been dealing with this. HERE IS MY SYMPTOMS: My main one is constantly having a tightness in my throat, which causes me to swallow ALL THE TIME, self-consciously "clearing it". When i swallow i feel something in my throat which worries me that i wont be able to swallow again. This is a constant cycle that I do all day everyday, since day 1. My throat feels dry and my vocal chords also stress when i talk or try to sing. I do belch often as a way to relieve the tightness too. Ive been drinking only water now for weeks and taking omeprazole for about a week, with no relief yet.
Ive had a swallow study and an endoscopy, as well as seen a vocal chord specialist. They've all narrowed it down to Acid Reflux. However, I dont have heartburn or any chest pains. Sometimes I do feel short of breath. AND I ONLY GET ANXIOUS WHEN THE SWALLOWING GETS DIFFICULT for obvious reasons. Its really worrisome and i just want to feel good again. Im 24 and havent ever had this problem before.
If anyone has anymore details of how to treat or even better diagnose it, PLEASE let me know as well. Its taking over my daily life at this point and ill gladly welcome ANY HELP and advice.

I have had the same issues and what you were diagnosed with sounds right. I have and deal with the same issues as yourself. I get it bad in the middle of eating and it makes me start to panic some as i feel like i cant breath or catch a breath. I would say you do the same which makes it seem worse as you start giving yourself anxiety or even a panic attack. Years ago when i had it I took medication and it went away for the most part and stayed gone for some time. It has returned and Im now starting my second month of medication and Ive started noticing a difference. I would suggest asking your doctor for Teva-Pantoprazole magnesium "Tecta" and seeing how you feel after a couple months. Also, try to keep the stress down when having an episode and you may find they dont last as long Hope this helps

I too have recently started burping constantly. Have the tightness in my chest and a knot type feeling in my throat. Also get the shortness of breath alot. The burping wakes me up at night and is constant throughout the day. I have found any certain foods doing this. Happens randomly.

You will more than likely find this is acid reflux. I put a quarter teaspoon of
bi-carbonate in a small glass of water, it works, far better than taking PPI's.
