Constant forced belching, feeling of air stuck in chest/throat (Acid Reflux/GERD diagnosed).

Hi All,
This is my first time doing this so I want to try to be as detailed as possible, as I have gone through several doctors and am simply not satisfied with my current situation and honestly don't know what else to do.
It all started about one year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER after about 2 days I was having a hard time breathing, always feeling like I was short of breathe. He gave me a inhaler which did not help, then after a few days my symptoms went away and I had this feeling of air trapped in my chest/throat and I was constantly forcing myself to burp in order to relieve these symptoms. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, with whom essentially determined and diagnosed me with some gastritis and GERD/Acid reflux.
Tests I have done:
- upper endoscopy (showed some gastritis/inflammation and acid reflux)
- 2 stool tests to check for h. pylori and other bacterium (both negative)
- esphogeal manometry and (2) 24hour pH tests (one without nexium and second time after maxed on nexium, twice a day. showed I was swallowing a lot of air and had acid reflux)
- swallow test? forgot what it's called but I drank liquids and they saw how it went down through xray.
Nothing has helped. I was prescribed prilosec, nexium, etc with no relief. I still take 1 nexium a day now as when I stopped, the forced belching would bring acid up and burn my chest/throat.
My doctors are now trying to prescribe me Zoloft in order to "suppress" my brain and feeling these symptoms, but I am hesitant as I assume this would only mask the problem, even if it worked.
I just CANT GET THIS FEELING TO GO AWAY. I am constantly belching, my chest is extremely tight, etc. Is it anxiety? I don't feel anxious.
ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP... THANK YOU.
Tony

Try drinking cod liver oil. I do not mean drink like beer, but drink in low amounts of CLO.

Tonyjyoo,
I drink a quarter to half a teaspoon of bi-carbonate in a small glass of water for my reflux, it works and is safer then PPI's. Please do not drink anymore than two teaspoons (10 ml), of cod liver oil.

Hi Tony,
You may want to check out retrograde crycopharyngeus dysfunction (RCP-D). The esophageal sphincter works when you swallow, but it stiffens and won't allow air out when you have to burp. Hope that helps!

Hi, you might find this surprising but I believe it can be anxiety related / induced or muscle spasm / nerves related as well. I have had this very same symptoms often, even very acidic taste in my mouth but usually only when I think I have them and I focus on them for a little while. Try to break out of it and see if its correlated in any way to your mood, notice if you feel it more when you might think you're having them, or when your mood is down (especially if you are generally worried about it and you know the symptoms that people feel normally). You probably don't have this when your mood is up or when you do something that gives you positive emotions. I often try to fight it with my brain by forcing myself to believe that I don't have anything and that I am making it up and in a couple of seconds the symptoms go away fully, or I try to redirect the pain and imagine I am feeling it somewhere else in the body. This made the go away completely as it seems that your brain is inducing either muscles spasms in muscles or it triggers the nerves around that side of your body that produces the sensation of pain. So notice if that makes it go way, if it its that then its anxiety related, I know it feels very real but there's actual studies that show how you body becomes more sensitive (mentally) and then gives you these sensations or triggers some of the nerves/ muscles that make you feel this way. But please do the necessary medical investigations either way, even for your piece of mind! Please try it, its been quite a revelation for me! All the best!

I am having the same problem since yesterday. I feel like some food is stuck in my throat. I can breathe just fine but I keep swallowing a lot because of that feeling. I have mild gastritis so swallowing saliva immediately causes me to burp. So I find myself burping a lot, sometimes forcefully too. How do I get rid of this?

I am currently going through the same exact thing. I switched from Lexapro to prozac and the issue started. First with shortness of breath and not these burps or air bubbles that get stuck. I already take prilosec and pepcid. I have also been under a great deal of stress. It is beyond frustrating. Have you had an resolve?

Thank u for sharing this information here, really opened my eyes to see tht all this excessive burping tht I have been having for over 10 years could possibly be due to anxiety, I'm now 25. I sometime suffer from heart burn when I eat greasy foods but I live in 🇯🇲 and never been to therapy or anything like that but I do think tht I may need some, Thanks for ur feedback though, will be doing some breathing exercises, I'm happy someone understands🙏

my name is grace and I'm only 12 but have been having kind of similiar problems.
for example: sometimes when i burp it feels like it comes through my heart, whenever i eat instead of it coming back up it just feels like it goes to my lungs. if i told my parents they would think i am overreacting. it is becoming really painful. some websites say i have Esophageal* cancer, while others say things like heartburn. i have no idea what it is or what is causing it. can someone help me?
ANYTHING is appreciated

Hi Grace. Sorry you feel so rubbish but please don't worry. problems with the stomach like this are incredibly common ! Google always provides results with the very very worse case scenario and even in those worst case scenarios almost never happen in someone so young. So the first thing to do is not panic and stop googling symptoms. The internet is a brilliant source of knowledge but not for medical stuff. i think its worth talking to your parents and say you feel like air is trapped in your chest and that its painful. If they don't think its worth speaking to a doctor about perhaps there is someone at school that can help? Even though its going to be nothing serious, its a horrible feeling so it would be good to find a way to make it go away. in the meantime, try and stay away from fizzy drinks (and the internet!)
. i hope you find an answer!x

I am having this same exact issue. I've been trying to get into see the Gastro doctor but unable due to my crazy medical insurance. Trying to get me to fork out $1,100 to have an endoscopy done. Anyways, Do you think you may have a hiatel hernia. That can have issues on your GI Tract and be forcing air into your stomach lining. I am not a doctor but just comparing symptoms. It can cause shortness of breath, anxiety, acid reflex, but you in a constant fight or flight if your vagus nervous system is constantly reacting to the stress. Try having your allergies tested to because if you are eating something and body does not agree with it than can cause stomach problems. These are all just recommended suggestions but I am also fighting this so you ARE NOT ALONE! I have an appointment to see a Asthma and Allergy doctor on the 22nd of this month. I will see if I am allergic to anything.

i have been having this for the last few months. I have had GERD sense i was 20 and i am now 43. I get that feeling a lot especially when i have not ate all day and i then eat! it always feels like a lot of pressure in my chest and then i feel like i am having to belch and most of the time it feels like food is coming back up and also like there is mucus in my throat. I also feel like i cannot take in a deep breath or that I have food stuck in my throat! I am not sure if it is anxiety induced or GERD. it usually gets better when i take an antacid but it still scary sometimes.

Hello, did stopping sertraline or reducing at 25 mg change anything ?… I have the same issues with sertraline (50mg). How did you manage these symptoms?

I know this is an old post; but still commenting on it to keep it on top. This is a common problem that afflicts a lot of people. The feeling of fullness and belching is very annoying and worrisome. Medications don’t work all the time and even exercising proves detrimental. I also found this post; hope it helps some of you: https://patient.info/forums/discuss/how-i-cured-my-acid-reflux-naturally--402930
