constant pain under the ribs (on the right side ..in the back)

I am experiencing this pain under my ribs, on the right side and more towards my back than in the front..for about three months now and I have to take Ibuprofen almost every day

This pain is just annoying as its not as bad to prevent me from moving or do stuff, but it is very upsetting to have to endure it every day.

I am 29 years old (woman).

I went to the doctor first in February when he tested my blood. The result came back normal (he said he tested for infections). After that I went again and he gave me an X-ray in my abdominal area..well that one came back normal too.

Now, last week (30th of May) he said he would send me through the post a form or something like that.. to go with it and have an ultrasound. I waited now a week and I cant wait to receive it already as I want to see if they will see something at the Echo scan.

I would have wanted the ultrasound taken first if you ask me..as I suspect it might be something like a kidney stone..or something like that..?

I only have this pain in my back, somewhere under my ribs (and on the right side), only when I stand.

I feel better when sitting down or lying. I am thankful for that at least..I suppose it could be worse ..so I get some break from this.

The doctor as I see him is clueless and he said that if we don't find anything after all these tests..he might just blame it on a muscle that was pulled or something..

I mean..this is ridiculous as basically it would be just a guess..even leaving it like that..

what if in time it affects me more with some other consequences?

I am very concerned already and tired with this pain.

Please I would like to know your opinions about this.

I must add that I have no other symptoms..no swellings or other problems. Just this pain every day and is constant and annoying and I just want to know what it is already to treat it and get over with my life.

I been having the same things but mine started on my left side, just a few months ago it moved to my right side. I been having them for 3yrs, so far every doc I have seen can't seem to figure out what's wrong, it's like all in my head

      Hi Cecilia,

Did the pain move to the right side or do you still have it in the left side?

I'm only asking because my pain was only in my right side for the first year or so and then now when it gets really bad, the left side flairs up as well.

      Thanks.

I am Indian and having this problem since last 3 years. My age is now 59. I did not find any medical reason for this pain and so I started doing the following things to get it almost 75% cured-

1- I do regular mild exercises by stretching my hands and my feet, the way the back and hip muscles may become flexible and a bit strong.

2- I have got a small ball or a small plastic cane. I search the area in the back (except spine) where the pain is acute on ribs and put it there and lay by pressing the area for 5 minutes or so. I roll over this ball to other nearby areas where I find pain. But I have found that though this pain is felt in ribs but its main source is muscles in soldiers. I press that part too.

3- I do deep breathing yoga exercises here in India called Pranayam and Anulom Vilom. In these the breath is filled in the chest (not in abdomen) and then blown out slowly. You may search and learn these exercises from net but please do it in the right way only as suggested.

If you wanna try all this please try slowly and with soft pressing of ribs and in case you find relief then only extend it for 15 minutes otherwise leave it. These things have no doctor advice or medical place but I do it since I get relief in my pain. So you should start it with all care and must take Doctor's advice before doing it as a precautionery measure. Also first get your body fully scanned to find that there is no specific reason for this pain, as was in my case.

Hi Geox, were you able to find any remedy for your back pain. My hubby has something similar and hence wanted to know. Thanks in advance

Hi Geox, what you describe is the same as what I experience currently. My back (and some place inside my right lower ribs) hurts the most when I am at push-up position. And it also hurts when I do knee-ups and leg-ups, and sit-ups. It hurts very badly at night when changing position during sleep. Interestingly, when I lift a heavy weight at bent-over position (stiff-legged deadlifts), it does not hurt. So, what gerryp says below makes a lot of sense. Probably, it is the result of straining quadratus lumborum.

    Hello from Wales.

I have this pain for 3 years. Male 54. It varies in intensity and is very faint sometimes. It's currently a nightmare though. When it is hurting bad it means I have to take painkillers all the time. Lying on my right side makes it worse. It hurts the most in bed and when getting in and out of chairs.

Hi, after seraching google I stumbled across your discussion. I have to say I have the exact same problem. Look up Nsaids and toxicity to the liver and stomach liner! I chewed 3 ibruprofin for back pain recovery after told it was what my chiropractic did and now I have suffered with inflamation in the liver area,( I know I should never listened to a chiropractic) Ibruprofin along with other Nsaids like aspirin or naproxen is Toxic to the body over time. I have to eat certain foods and eliminate Alcohol, soda, spicy, processed foods, chocolate, caffiene, pizza, tomato pastes acidic fruits and stress. Need to Eat fruits and green veggies and lean meats. went to urgent care and a doctor said I have "gastritis" and put me on some omeprazole generic for prilosec, that too is bad for your stomach and creates problems like acid reflux after you get off it! look up Dr.Ted Broer he is naturpath Dr and really has info you will be glad you heard, Youtube him. I am med free currently and have been using inflammatory herbs like Tumeric supplement or making a tea with the powder to help with the inflamation-it really does help calm the pain in the liver area that you all are having the same problems with,(Next time it flares up see what you did and make a note so you know the cause!) Its horrible I know you guys and the american medical doctors do not know the leading cause or cure but eventual you will figure out the causes and I been praying for God to cure us!

Hi , I hope you are feeling better. I had the same problem you had and I had pain on the same spot. I had gone to the hospital because of the pain and I got checked for any infections but everything was  ok. Months passed and the pain got worse. I had visited the hospital again and it turned out I had liquid in my lungs. I have lupus so I was having a flare and my lupus was attacking my organs. Everything is ok now but I thought I should share my story just in case you havent checked your lungs again then I encourage you to do so. Just to make sure  you are ok smile I hope everything turns out great.

I really hope everyone here is ok or will be ok as I read your stories and feel that maybe because everyone shared their experiences it might have helped someone to check for particular things or mention it to doctors and rule some things out of the way.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and I really hope everyone will be ok.
