constant pain under the ribs (on the right side ..in the back)

I am experiencing this pain under my ribs, on the right side and more towards my back than in the front..for about three months now and I have to take Ibuprofen almost every day
This pain is just annoying as its not as bad to prevent me from moving or do stuff, but it is very upsetting to have to endure it every day.
I am 29 years old (woman).
I went to the doctor first in February when he tested my blood. The result came back normal (he said he tested for infections). After that I went again and he gave me an X-ray in my abdominal area..well that one came back normal too.
Now, last week (30th of May) he said he would send me through the post a form or something like that.. to go with it and have an ultrasound. I waited now a week and I cant wait to receive it already as I want to see if they will see something at the Echo scan.
I would have wanted the ultrasound taken first if you ask me..as I suspect it might be something like a kidney stone..or something like that..?
I only have this pain in my back, somewhere under my ribs (and on the right side), only when I stand.
I feel better when sitting down or lying. I am thankful for that at least..I suppose it could be worse ..so I get some break from this.
The doctor as I see him is clueless and he said that if we don't find anything after all these tests..he might just blame it on a muscle that was pulled or something..
I mean..this is ridiculous as basically it would be just a guess..even leaving it like that..
what if in time it affects me more with some other consequences?
I am very concerned already and tired with this pain.
Please I would like to know your opinions about this.
I must add that I have no other symptoms..no swellings or other problems. Just this pain every day and is constant and annoying and I just want to know what it is already to treat it and get over with my life.

Hi Geox
I have read your post and can't believe that someone else has almost the same symstoms as me. I am now in my third year of having this horrible sickly daily pain. Mine starts when I get up in the morning and literally start to move. It feels like it's mostly in my back on the right side and comes in waves really strong almost takes my breath away. When I lay down I get a heavy sensation from the right hand side of my belly button just under my ribs and it travels down to by groin very uncomfortable. I have passed a couple of kidney stones in the past (that is the worst pain ever!!) and I do have another one now but appartently my doctor doesn't think this is causing my symptoms. However, I am seeing a specialist in Urology tomorrow so I will let you know the outsome. I have rubbed Voltarol Emulgel on the area this morning and it has actually helped slightly. Keep in touch and let me know how your scan goes.

For anyone reading this thread.. I am NOT a doctor, but I've got a lot of experience with dealing with medical issues.
Pains in the back, sharp, throbbing, constant, intermitent, dull
These could be your kidneys, if they are your kidneys, DO NOT take Ibuprophen!!! Unless directed to do so by a doctor. Ibuprophen is filtered through the kidneys and it can unfortunately cause more kidney problems. Kidney problems are detected from symptoms, blood work, but urine testing. You need to find out what your GFR (Glomeration Filtration Rate) and Creatnine numbers are.
I am apparently unique, in that I don't normally feel the pain in my kidneys. I felt it once when I was pregnant with my second child and it felt like contractions, I thought I was in premature labor, I'd had "back" labor with my first child and all of the contraction pains were in my back, period! So when I felt that pain, and I'd miscarried between the two you can imagine my fear. I went to ER and turned out I had a MAJOR Kidney infection, but I didn't have other symptoms, pain with urination, etc...
In 2013 I went on a road trip with my two younger daughters. While on the road trip that lasted just over a month, I lost a lot of weight, and I mean a lot. I went down in 4 pant sizes, had to buy new pants/shorts. When I got home I continued to lose weight and finally went to the doctors. Turns out it was a good thing I did, I was 7 points away from needing dialysis. I was taken off of two medications I had been put on for other health issues and one of them had Ibuprophen in it. The doctor hoped at first that it was the medication that was causing the problem with my kidneys, but unfortunately it wasn't or at least it wasn't causing all of it. I am constantly having to have urinalysis done to check my GFR and creatnine, if my numbers get too low I will need dialysis.
Now, Having pain in your shoulders, this is a sign of heart problems. My mother in law had a pain in her shoulder that just kept getting worse over days. She was having a heart attack and didn't even know it. Check with your doctors!
Other pains you can have, the sides of your body, either left or right side. Sharp pains, these can be kidney stones. It doesn't matter what size the kidney stone is, it's going to cause the same intense pain. The pain comes from the Ureter contracting. The Ureter connects your kidneys, to your bladder. When a stone has left the kidney, the Ureter will contract, trying to push the stone to the bladder. Once the stone is in your bladder, it can take days, even weeks to pass through your bladder and out of your body. Some won't pass and may require surgery for removal or other procedures to break it up enough to pass through your bladder.
Pain on the right side can also be your gallbladder, which can have gallstones in it. It can also be a gallbladder attack. The gallbladder can get infected and may need to be removed. You need to tell your doctor!
Pain on the right side can be your appendix. Appendicitis can start near your navel and then move to the right side. If it is your appendix that is causing the pain, you need to see a doctor immediately!! Your appendix can burst and lead to many problems, including death. Talk to your doctor!
Pain on the sides, either side, can be caused by constipation. Most people know if they are constipated, but there are times that you may not know you are. You can have a blockage that allows some movement through your bowels, but the impacted waste can stay in the same place and may require diuretics and even surgery. Talk to your doctor!
Dull pains in the stomach and even the sides, an inability to eat much, feeling full all of or most of the time, this can be caused by so many different things, it's ridiculous, but you NEED to talk to your doctor. If your doctor isn't listening to you, you need an advocate. You need someone to go to the doctor with you and make sure the doctor is listening to you and if they aren't, finding one that will.
Not feeling hungry, feeling full a lot and you haven't eaten, it can be Gastroparesis. Gastroparesis means that your stomach isn't contracting. This means that the food you eat, it requires your stomach to not only break the food down, but it also needs to contract to push the food into your intestines. Gastroparesis can cause other problems. If the food in your stomach is not digesting because it's not contracting... well imagine the food you're eating just piling up and starting to rot in your stomach, instead of following natures path. Test to find out if this is a problem you do have, you have to go without food for a certain length of time, you then go into the doctors the next morning and you will get scanned. You will then eat some kind of food that has specific medication mixed in or injected in what you eat. The medication shows up on the scan VERY well. So an hour after you eat you are scanned again, then another hour later you are scanned again, and then two hours later (time lapse can be different) you are scanned again. This test is watching what your stomach is or isn't doing. It tracks how fast or how slow the food moves through your body.
All of these things being said, talk to your doctor!! If the pain is sudden, unbearable, NEVER felt before, DO NOT WAIT, go to the hospital, call for an ambulance. Do NOT try to self diagnose, you are not a doctor and reading some websites, posts, including mine are not going to help you become a doctor and fix yourself. It's pertinant that you seek immediate medical attention!
I have chronic Kidney Disease, partial Gastroparesis, GERD, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, "had" Kidney Stones, Meniere's Disease (causes hearing loss, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, etc), nerve damage, Lumbar Facet Syndrome, Degeneration of L4-SI, Migraines, Asthma, I could go on, but I'm not going to. If I didn't listen to myself about the weight loss (which can also be diabetes), I may have had my kidneys fail completely and could either be on dialysis or possibly even dead.
Again, listen to your body, seek medical attention and get off the damn computer, it can't diagnose you!
Good luck!
