constant pain under the ribs (on the right side ..in the back)

Posted , 236 users are following.

I am experiencing this pain under my ribs, on the right side and more towards my back than in the front..for about three months now and I have to take Ibuprofen almost every day

This pain is just annoying as its not as bad to prevent me from moving or do stuff, but it is very upsetting to have to endure it every day.

I am 29 years old (woman).

I went to the doctor first in February when he tested my blood. The result came back normal (he said he tested for infections). After that I went again and he gave me an X-ray in my abdominal area..well that one came back normal too.

Now, last week (30th of May) he said he would send me through the post a form or something like that.. to go with it and have an ultrasound. I waited now a week and I cant wait to receive it already as I want to see if they will see something at the Echo scan.

I would have wanted the ultrasound taken first if you ask me..as I suspect it might be something like a kidney stone..or something like that..?

I only have this pain in my back, somewhere under my ribs (and on the right side), only when I stand.

I feel better when sitting down or lying. I am thankful for that at least..I suppose it could be worse ..so I get some break from this.

The doctor as I see him is clueless and he said that if we don't find anything after all these tests..he might just blame it on a muscle that was pulled or something..

I mean..this is ridiculous as basically it would be just a guess..even leaving it like that..

what if in time it affects me more with some other consequences?

I am very concerned already and tired with this pain.

Please I would like to know your opinions about this.

I must add that I have no other symptoms..no swellings or other problems. Just this pain every day and is constant and annoying and I just want to know what it is already to treat it and get over with my life.

    Hello from Cape Town Geox

About 2 weeks ago I developed a debilitating pain inside/lower right rib cage which saw me rushing off to my GP .   He prodded around the area and found that my Gallbladder was tender to the touch.  Off I went to have blood tests , ultrasound , chest X-ray which all came back negative.  No gallstones just a slight thickening of the gallbladder " skin " .   I was sent away with a bottle of painkillers which I chucked into the medicine cabinet !

Ive been into the Banting diet lifestyle for about a year and been pigging out on fats , creams , bacon , red meat usually washed down with a great wine ( usually the whole bottle )

My pain started after a lunch of oxtail , onions , garlic and peppers floating around in a sea of delicious fat laced with butter which seemed to be the trigger.

the past two weeks I've lived on fruit , veggies , chicken breast , fish and nuts .  No alchohol , no trans fats , no butter cream sugar cakes chips sweets chocolates cold drinks etc . Gallons of water and fat free milk.

    The pain is gone !

i suspect that my liver was overloaded and screaming " no more "

I listened to my body and it worked.

Your comment makes complete sense to me. I was Paleo & am a low fat vegan. I also quit drinking alcohol & am seeing improvements.

I have been having the same thing for the past few months.  it's not so much pain but it feels like a tennis ball is stuck under my right ribcage. it feels very strange and is very annoying.  I went to the doctor a few weeks after it started and they had no idea, did blood work and sent me for an ultrasound to check my galbladder, everything came back normal.  Has anyone gotten any answers yet?  At first I thought it might have been a muscle strain b/c I had been working in the yard and lifting bags of topsoil but after a few weeks when it was still there that is when I went to the doctors.

This week I experienced similar pain as discussed above on the right side of my back below my ribcage.  I went to the doctor where xrays and urine analysis did not show anything significant.  My wife suggested that I drink cranberry juice.  So over the course of two days I drank an entire 32oz bottle of 100% cranberry juice (I cut it with water so it wasn't too bitter) and for the most part my pain is gone.  Give this a try and see if it helps you.

I was a medical massage therapist for 30 years. So I have experienced a lot of pain and worked with clients who have had a lot of pain. I did deep tissue work, etc. Acid reflux has caused me to have pain in the upper back right side at times. I knew the acid reflux was organ related before the doctor told me what it was.  Lying down makes Acid Reflux worse for anyone who has it. I have to sleep propped up by pillows. I only get the acid reflux if I overeat, so I don't. I am 62 and my doctor said the rib pain is from osteoporosis. Loss of bone density. I had a scan and my upper discs are fused. That is all over rib pain and it feels different from these "attacks." My weight is thin/medium. I drink Prosecco on weekend and moderately. I am not diabetic but I did have a scan of my kidneys and was told that I don't drink enough water.  This  right upper back pain is 'break through". It happens even if I have the pain meds. This feels organ related and that is why I am alarmed and worried about it. Back pain for me is more shooting down the leg or pain that occurs when I stay in one position too long. Wear high heels for a few hours. Lift something too heavy. Physical pain in the upper right back, in the USA, where we drive on the right side, overr reaching to the back sea to get something. can cause intercostal muscle pulls and pain that is excruciating, but it hurts more when you breath. That is an injury from twisting the back. This is constant. It is not throbbing and it is deep. I looked at this site because I was looking at different possibilities and organ problems that cause attacks. I was surprised to find a dialog and that it is more common. I am 62. Tonight after I read some statements, I thought about which accupunture needles I would use and decided kidney/pancreas/Liver. I don't have needles, but I have "needled" myself at times. I learned from therapists who worked on me. I took a tennis ball and lay on the bed with the ball under the exact center (pressure point) of the right upper back pain. Approx 15 minutes. I did have to readjust it a few times. It interrupted the relaxing and breathing into the pain. What the Japanese call sweet or exquisite pain. The pain that hurts so bad, it feels good. Also like one is pressing it to release the pain or the feeling of holding an organ in place.  It was intense. Afterward, I got up and walked around. It felt more on the surface as if someone were still pressing on that point. After about 10 minutes it went away. That does not mean it won't come back, but it helped a lot. If it is physical, I wonder if it happens to right handed people who do a lot of computer scrolling. If it is organ related, I would guess in terms of accupuncture that it is kidney, pancreas or spleen related. Not stomach, liver or intestines. I am going to proceed and get my pancreas checked, to make sure I don't have pancreatitis. Also, my brother once had a motorcycle accident that hurt his spleen. That was all related to bile and caused upper back pain.

Hello, I unfortunately have the same pain!  Back in 2005, I was having this pain and found out it was an ovarian cyst on my right ovary and the doctor could not tell based on a physical exam.  She sent me home which is when I started to have discomfort while urinating and that is when my doctor told me to go to the emergency room.  They made me do a barium x-ray which is when they found the baseball sized cyst.  I had it removed then started having the pain again a few years later.  I had a transverse abdominal ultrasound that came back normal, so I let it go.  Starting in October 2014, I starting having the pains again- mostly a dull pain around my hanging/floating ribs on the right side that would sometimes radiate to the front or the back.  I also have a strange pinching sensation near the right side of my belly button.  I have had a blood test, urine test, abdominal ultrasound and transverse pelvic ultrasound that all came back normal.  My doctor said she would refer me to a gastroenterologist but I declined.  I do not wish to take any more test at this time since everything is coming back normal.  My doctor also said it most likely could be a muscle strain.

I noticed at times(not all the time), the pain would get a little more intense while urinating, bowel movements, or during sex.  Also my hanging/floating ribs on both sides are some what tender to touch.

Still baffled!  It's good to know that I'm not alone but sad we're all experiencing pain!

I had pain in my right side that radiates under my rib cage then to my back. I did every test and they all came back good. My MD now telling me maybe it’s a muscle problem but the muscle relaxers still didn’t work. May 2017 makes one years and sitill no answer

So I originally posted that I thought my symptoms were from kidney stones and diet related. After a CT scan, MRI, and 2  UA's nothing appears to be wrong. So I went to a Chiropracter and it seems I have a pinched nerve close to my spine (in the same lateral line) and the nerve pain is radiating throughout my right side (mainly in the kidney area behind and below my ribs). Seems strange they can be related but since my chiro appointment and multiple massages the pain is close to gone and I haven't had any pain flare ups since. Hope this helps.

Wow! Curious if you're still pain free? I've been dealin with it for over a year. It comes and goes but always seems to be there a little bit. 30 YO male. Thought mine was alcohol related too. Quit drinking, didn't help. CT, ultrasound, looks tests, all normal.

Hello everyone. From reading the comments and the symptoms most of you are complaining of, it sounds like gallstones. I had the sane thing and It took a year for anyone to take me seriously and think of other options as I'm only 20. I have my gallbladder out now and have no more attacks/pains.

Nope, I had my gallbladder taken out 10 years ago and 3 days earlier had a total hystorectomy, have these same symtoms still, glad that this worked for you though. Stay healthy

Had my gallbladder out in 1996, I'm 58 years old, currently. I've had pain very similar to a gallbladder attack in my right side under my ribs but not quite as intense; more constant, never really goes away for the past 7 or 8 years. It radiates into my back and causes a side "aching" feeling most of the time. It is worse when I walk for some reason. I cannot lie on my right side, either. I've had every scan and test known to man. My first GP made a guess diagnosis of Sphincer of Oddi. My newest GP says pancreatitis. Nothing to do but watch my diet. I'm so tired of living with constant pain and since it hurts more when I walk, has greatly decreased any sort of activity; even housework. Anyone been told the same?

HI All; this is the SOLUTION

I have suffered 7 years; starting with right side abdominda pain ; to date the gP's have told me IBS ; i have suffered and it has gotten WORSE.

Following a  chance meeting with a CHRISTIAN; who was in a wheelchair (and whom i told 'if i didn't steal today', i expected God (who is love) to 'heal today', in the SAME week; i 'happened across some information; which led me to something else. (This has all happened in the LAST month- jan 2015).

I read that Cranberries TOGETHER with Oregano can INHIBIT H pylori.

I read that Liquorice tablets KILL h pylori.

AND i also discovered that MILK THISTLE ; assists and Can REPAIR the Liver on a cellular level (lots of reading).

So it also came as a surpise that the LIVER pulls the stuff it needs from the BOWEL ( glutamine) and suchlike..

So if you are suffering IBS symptoms ; it may be as a result of 'bad bacteria' and ulcers, or it may be because your liver is struggling.

Now remember,i have suffered right side abdomina pain that has gotten worse ; eating some foods played, up , till there was a full blown distension,  and bowel issues..  My Gps tested with a scan, ultrasound, vaginal ultrasound, Tube (both ends) and MRI scan. What tehy didn't scan was my liver/gallbladder and what they didn't test for was 'bad bacteria'.. What tehy did was give me 'pain killers' which needed clearing out of my system; anti-oxidants; as the 'waste' products were now building up in my system.

I am now in the first week for YEARS that i can EAT without pain, and my Bowels (which also affected my NERVES ; having suffered appendicitis type pain (probably due to an inflammed gallbladder after YEARS of this right sideded abdominal pain being ignored and me being told to take pain killers & live with it)

So PLEASE; whether you believe me or not; PLEASE do

    1) Take a liquorice tablet to erradicate 'bad bacteria' and introduce a pro-biotic.

    2) Take a MILK Thistle tablet to improve the health of your Liver (and hence your gallbladder)

    3) introduce ANTi-oxidant foods and Anti-inflammatory foods.(garlic / Turmeric) [beetroots/ onions/ redgrapes etc; please look these up to find some you like)

Please also consider reading up on oregano OIL.. and consider improving your diet (red grapes are anti-oxidant).

It turns out the LIvER store 'fat's . processes toxins, and proteins, and when it struggles it starts to store fat; it is known as 'fatty liver' and can progress to more serious illnesses.. it then affects the gallbladder, & affects the bowel...

By doing these simple things; you should hopefully get rid of that right sided pain within days..and be able to inform your GP, so they can take a look at your liver/ gallbladder and perhaps test for H pylori..

So give God and Jesus thanks today; for bringing that healing information to all thsoe who have suffered the right sided abdominal pains; because detoxying your liver and takign anti-inflammatories is not what the Doctor tells us..

please do give me feedback with regards to the supplements.. and let me know how you get on. .. smile

apologies; i also forgot to mention that it is important that you take a vitamin tablet; to ensrue you are getting the right vitamins daily;  Liverhealth vitamin tablet is perhaps beneficial to some who believe that it is their liver and gallbladder.. wink
