constant pain under the ribs (on the right side ..in the back)

Posted , 236 users are following.

I am experiencing this pain under my ribs, on the right side and more towards my back than in the front..for about three months now and I have to take Ibuprofen almost every day

This pain is just annoying as its not as bad to prevent me from moving or do stuff, but it is very upsetting to have to endure it every day.

I am 29 years old (woman).

I went to the doctor first in February when he tested my blood. The result came back normal (he said he tested for infections). After that I went again and he gave me an X-ray in my abdominal area..well that one came back normal too.

Now, last week (30th of May) he said he would send me through the post a form or something like that.. to go with it and have an ultrasound. I waited now a week and I cant wait to receive it already as I want to see if they will see something at the Echo scan.

I would have wanted the ultrasound taken first if you ask me..as I suspect it might be something like a kidney stone..or something like that..?

I only have this pain in my back, somewhere under my ribs (and on the right side), only when I stand.

I feel better when sitting down or lying. I am thankful for that at least..I suppose it could be worse ..so I get some break from this.

The doctor as I see him is clueless and he said that if we don't find anything after all these tests..he might just blame it on a muscle that was pulled or something..

I mean..this is ridiculous as basically it would be just a guess..even leaving it like that..

what if in time it affects me more with some other consequences?

I am very concerned already and tired with this pain.

Please I would like to know your opinions about this.

I must add that I have no other symptoms..no swellings or other problems. Just this pain every day and is constant and annoying and I just want to know what it is already to treat it and get over with my life.

Just another person who read this thread thinking.... "I know how that feels!". I'm on the mend so I wanted to metion a few things that I was treated for that I see repeated over and over here...

If there's indigestion, burping, acid reflux involved with the pain.... Test for H.Pylori. It's a simple blood test and treatment. Some facilities even have a breath test for it. That was my problem. I suffered for almost a year before one doctor finally paid attention the the horrible heartburn I was having. As I began to heal, I took several trips to my chiropractor/kinesiologist. Several adjustments later, I feel almost back to normal again and definately pain free.

Hope that helps someone. Best fortunes to you all in finding some answers.

I made a mistake and put a link in my last post so I won't do that again.

I really want to make sure that people reading this know they aren't alone. My pain in my back (on the inside near my core) and under my ribs came in suddenly while I was standing up in the kitchen washing out a small pot. It was so sudden and painful and felt like my insides were having spasms, or something - I thought it was my lungs because of where the pain was, or my kidneys - but it was too high for that and it went to my front right below my ribs. Even now, 2 days later I feel sore like I was in an accident or worked out to hard or something.

I'm an American size 18/20 and I was in a play over the weekend. I ate out more, more starches, less protein, some alcohol (which is rare for me) and not enough water. AND I was wearing a waist trainer all day and in the evening.

This started 2 days after I fell asleep with one on in a chair and hadn't worn one sense. (No reason, just haven't gone anywhere).

I think my "core" muscles are weak or bruised and my diet is messing with my body. I'm going to do a colon cleanse, take some probiotics, work out my core and change my diet to remove starches and too many sugars.

I had no idea so many people are dealing with this "mysterious" yet very real pain.

I'm going to put this on my FB page too. I'm not advertising, I just found this post accidently because I was scared and looking for answers and this came up.

Please contact me if you find an answer , a medical one or if you find a natural/holistic treatment that works.

I refuse to have this never go away. This is interfering with me sleeping. My toes in my right foot feel numb, as does my the back of fingertips under the nail.

    This has to stop.

Hello. I am 26 years old and have been experiencing the ff pain:

    1. Pain on the right side under the ribs.

    2. Pain on the right side of my back. ( it feels like an extension of pain from the ribs)

    3. The first time I experienced the pain, it was like a needle pinning from my ribs to the back.

    4. The pain has now become constant like it was a tender muscle but sometimes the shooting pain can be felt.

    Actions:

I have been to 5 doctors already and they cannot see anything on the cause of the pain. However, one doctor told me that it may be a sludge of very fine sand size of gallstones that goes to my gallbladder.

    Tests done:

    1. Full abdomen ultrasound

All organs are normal/no stones found

    2. Xray (found a slight scoliosis but doctor said it was from my childhood and it do not affect the pain)

    3. Blood tests

    Here they found I have

    High cholesterol

    High uric acid

    High triglycerides

Which one doctor told me that the high uric acid might have causing the pain

    Treatments

    1. Pain reliever

Alleviates the pain only when on meds but comes back as soon as I stopped the meds and did not solve the why

    2. Liphantyl for high triglyceride and cholesterol

Still on med but the pain is still there ( tender and painful)

    My thoughts

I have been so paranoid because of the pain and where it is coming from. And sometimes I fear that it may be cancerous.

Next month I will be incorporating exercise and eat healthily and hopes the pain will subside.

I have the same pain! Had lower back surgery in June, after I was home and aware I had this horrible pain on my right side under ribs and down toward waist. 3 visits to ER and hospital stay with many test including CT. They found nothing wrong. All blood labs and CT where absolutly normal. The only thing I have had wrong is a slow digestive system waking up from back surgery. 5 specialist later have concluded the pain was from muscles being torn, pulled from surgery. The doctor told me that they move your body in positions that aren't normal and paralyze you with medication so you can't move. Put me on broad spectrum antibiotic and steroids for a week with bed rest. I do feel much better still have a slight pain at waist line up to ribs but that should heal and go away. So my point us: it could very well be a muscle. But you should follow through with test from your doctor to rule out anything going on.

Hi my name is Sun, 25 and I have the exact pain in my back it only gets worst when I smoke but when I drink water it seem to be the only thing that helps, it almost feels like gas I've been to the doctor twice for this reason both time I got no results the only thing they did was give me an ultra Sound and it was clear so I don't kno what else to do they didn't give me and thing to take for the pain either it's in the exact same spot everytime on my right side like under my ribs like u said i can't believe someone has this exact pain this is probably my 3rd time in 4 or 5yrs experiencing this pain and it may last for a week in a half or so and then leaves for a while does anyone have any home remedies for this my dad thinks it's acid gas because I don't drink water like I should, he said I should try tums or something for gas to release it im really not sure if I think that's what it is, the only reason I do think it's gas cause the doctors never see anything wrong

Hello All.. I live in Kentucky in the USA... I'm a 40 yr old woman and happily married mother of 4... I was diagnosed a year ago with pancolitis after 8 days into he ICU and 3 days more in the hospital . I have had the severe pain under my right rib cage and into my middle and lower back for at least 2 years and have had every test described above. I thought when I received the pancolitis diagnosis that it would be the diagnosis that solved the reason behind this mysterious and undiagnosable pain. However, my GI Dr has told me it's not related and he was rather rude and made the declaration that I needed to deal with it and had a low pain tolerance. In which I proceeded to tell him I gave birth naturally to 2 of my children with no pain medication, my husband then explained I had a shoulder come completely out of socket and reconstructive surgery on it and never once cried or complained. Yet this stomach pain has me bent over in tears. I'm at a loss, my diet is restricted because of the colitis, I do not drink alcohol or carbonated drinks, or eat fatty foods... Because of the colitis I am the very opposite of constipated. I find it bizarre that so many ppl (all over the world) are experiencing the same pains and symptoms and no diagnoses are available and tests are not picking up any issues. We are given lip service and marked as hypochondriacs or weak individuals. Pancreatic issues are similar as well as gall bladder and liver. Yet all of those test show nothing abnormal about these organs. I know I'm not imagining this pain and I'm not weak and unable to stand pain. There has to be an answer and hopefully by sharing our stories and being proactive about our personal health someone somewhere will find an answer... Prays and good health my fellow suffers!

After reading the responses you've had upto now I'd say for me the common factors are pain comes after running - I'm training for a 10k at the moment and running 3 times a week on average 7 km a time but once a week I run around 10k and I'm wondering if dehydration and kidney related issues and constipation are the common factor - I've had this pain only 2 days and it's worse when sitting and after eating. I have had this pain before and it went away after 4 days after plenty of fluids and sorting out the constipation. Oh the othe thing is that the night before this started I stretched up in my sleep and got a really sharp pain on my right side of abdominal but I'd say much lower than this current pain but this is also in keeping with Drs. Suspicions of something happening in the night, so last night I had a similar thing but on the left side but nowhere near as bad. Hope this helps someone - I'm hopeful this is going to be gone in a few days , it's very uncomfortable but I'm doubtful it's anything sinister having read messages above.

Hi Geox! I know you posted this a long time ago. Have you found answers? I've had similar problems and did tons of research. Have you heard of "floating kidney disease"? Also called Nephroptosis...  I mention this because you said it only hurts when you are standing up. And it is only detectable if the imaging is done while you are standing. If you haven't had any answers yet, I would talk to your doctor about this. Good luck!

Also finding out one called Ptotic Kidney where the kidney is somehow detached from where it is supposed be in your body due to blunt impact or possible birth/genetic issue.

Hi.  I was searching the web, again, and found this discussion.  So much like my symptoms and no posts in 9 months.  I'm curious to see in the last year the results of your tests.   I have also got pain in my right back, near my mid section, close to my spine.  I feel bloated under my ribcage on the right side.  Sometimes it feels like small bubbles or water over tiny pebbles.  I have tingling in my toes.  I have burning in my shoulders and back.  I rely on 1400 mg of Tylenol daily to live.  I have had CT's, MRI's, Ultrasounds, X-Rays...neurology, general surgeon - found small gall stones but can't guarantee that removing my gall bladder will take away the pain.  He asked if I was ever tested for diverticulitis.  I have been diagnosed by 2 doctors with possible IBS..no conclusive tests.  I have a cyst on a kidney that they feel is not the issue.  I have a cyst on my Uteris and will require a hysterectomy but they don't feel that is the problem.  I'm also at my wits end with this.  I have changed my diet.  I have tried probitotics and still take them.  I started taking vitamins over a year ago.  I lost 17 pounds and need to lose about 25 more.  I have been the same weight now for over 5 months...I am not under stress.  I have a wonderful and stable lifestyle - very balanced.  I occasionally drink alcohol.  I don't smoke.  I also went to 2 chiropractors and got no relief. I'm  Has ANYONE gotten any answers in the last year???   Thank you *I'm 52 in November and female...US    I know this sounds crazy but I think the doctors are clueless...there is way too much of whatever this is and NO answers....

      Hello,

I suffered with right sided pains and all my tests apart from 1 ultrasound out of 4 showed debris in my hall bladder. I recently had a HIDA scan which showed that my gallbladder isn't functioning properly and is causing me pain. I am yet to see the surgeon.

I would recommend this scan as it would show of it is your gallbladder or not. Diverticulitis is usually felt on the left side so not sure on that. Other things on the right could be ovarian, appendix or the spincter of oddi.

I hope you manage to get a diagnosis. I currently suffer with undiagnosed left sided pains sad
