constipation again

Posted , 7 users are following.

I'm really almost at the end of my tether. My constipation stuff - constella and pico liquid - isn't working and I have terrible cramping pains. Called 111 and hopefully a dr is coming out although I don't know what he can do. It's really frightening as I'm not sure if my system has completely seized up. I'm at the stage when I really don't want to go on as life isn't worth living like this. Any idea how I can end this would be welcome

There is a lot you can do long term.

Short term the Dr should be able to give you something to resolve the issue.

1st drink more but not with caffeine.

2nd eating peanuts or raisins usually gets me going more if blocked up.

3rd invest in a Centrifugal juicer. Takes out the complex fibres that aggravate ibs but leaves in less complex fibres to help you go regularly.

3rd take a walk each day. Exercise helps bowel movement.

Probiotics help. I found the wheat based one better.

Possibly reduce your dairy intake. This can block you up.

Find a way to reduce stress. I crochet and Knit but you can also try mindfulness, ti-chi, yoga etc.

Get a goods nights sleep. Sleep helps the bowels to work correctly.

If you are female look at getting the depo contraception injection. Ibs can be hormonal.

    Hope this helps.

      Hello Susan,

I appreciate the time you have taken to reply butI'm afraid I have tried your suggestions over the years to no avail. I had a congenital issue - deformity is too strong - which necessitated surgery as a baby. This worked satisfactorily while I was younger - I'm now 69 years - but things get difficult as you age!  I do have a consulant colorectal surgeon hence the use of constella but as I mentioned before, this isn't working properly now. But I really do appreciate your response.

      Thank you

I am so sorry you are in such distress...it is really hard and frustrating to have chronic digestive issues and not find relief...However, I am going to begin praying each day that you will find some solutions and relief...I believe that we can heal....this is my hope for you.

I am so sorry you are in such distress.  It does not sound like you are in the USA.  Have you tried Amitiza or Linzess?  Didn't really help me, personally, but I know many have had good results.  Have you tried Magnesium? My doctor told me to try Magnesium Chloride and that helped.  My doctor at Stanford suggested I try Ibergast.  It seemed to help but you have to give it a week or two.  You can order it through Amazon.  I hope you can get some relief. 🙏🙏

You're right, I'm in England. I haven't heard of any of the items you mention apart from Magnesium Chloride which I've tried to no avail. I will try to find the others. Thank you for your reply.

Amitiza and Linzess are prescription drugs.  Iberogast us natural but you need to give it a week or two. Does not taste the best but you can mix it in anything.

Thank you Margot. I've just found out myself that Linzess is linaclotide which I'm already taking - it's known as Constella here in the UK. I'll mention Amitozoa when I next see my consultant. I've found Iberogast on the Amazon uk site and I'll give it a try.

      Thanks again,

      Pat

Amitiza.  Yes, try the Iberogast but give it a week or two.  I had cut down to once a day.

I recorded constipation in here of over 20 days once and whilst uncomfortable my system did not seize up. By about day 16 I started to eat prunes regularly and that kickstarted me. It was not instant but did work.

Thank you for replying.  I already eat prunes almost every day with my breakfast muesli and I'm afraid they don't have any effect on my system. In fact, none of the usual natural remedies do - drinking plenty of water, chia seeds, flax seeds, eating vegetables etc I do have a long colon and slow transit time which don't help. Thanks again

PS 111 very limited. Not so long ago called 111 for a bleed and they said apply a little pressure. It culminated with A&E and surgery to stop the bleeding. Do not rely on 111.

Prune juice and oranges helped me.  Perhaps try your laxative with it.  This also helped me.

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, prunes and oranges are already part of my diet. Foods and supplements don't have any effect - it's medication or nothing!

I have also tried Movicol which is effective but you need to take several doses.  When you start feeling your stools are getting too loose, ease off the medication. If this is still not working, maybe your doctor can suggest a different laxative from the one you are trying.

I do have a pot of Movicol which I was able to get through Amazon's uk site. I've only tried it once with no results but I'll give it another try. When you say several doses, do you mean the standard dose over several days or one mega dose? I ask this as Dulcoease's pico liquid - sodium picosulfate - sometimes works for me but only after a large dose which results in diarrhoea - better than nothing of course!

Thank you again Pippa,I do appreciate your advice

I took the standard dose twice daily until I got results. If you have severe constipation (fecal impaction), you can dissolve eight sachets in 1 litre of water.

Merry Christmas to you too Pippa. I'm feeling better having people to share thoughts with - these aren't subjects yoy can discuss with just anyone!
