Consultants instructions 17 days post op
Posted , 12 users are following.
I have to walk half an hour twice a day.
I have two crutches for one more week, then
1 for the unoperated side. I have to do the hospital
exercises including the leg slide to the side.
As I am 79, I was hoping for a gentle approach,
but no such luck! I wonder what advice is
given when it's a 90 year old!

i have had two hip replacement. on my second hip replacement I am 17 days post operative too and had my first physio post op appointment yesterday. I have had a completely different approach this time. I wasnt happy with my first physio but happier with this new one.He has said to me the key is to walk well i.e. quality not quantity. instead of giving me hundred of exercises and making you walk long distances he suggests to get the muscles active again first and the walking will come naturally. also not to do more than the pain barrier. stop when in pain and rest. the exercise he gave me was one simple one which lift the operated knee to waist and then slowly put leg downwards and move the leg sideways slowly without touching the floor and then move leg back and then behind and then back and finish. he said dont worry about opening legs too wide that would come. what I hated last timewas they mademe stretch soo much it really caused me pain. Hoping this works and it just shows there are so many different schools of thought. good luck cathie and dont over do it.

physio as my 1st hip op came about by an over
zealous physio pressing my piriformis area, causing
trauma to my sciatic nerve, and on to not being able
to put weighton my leg. I know I must have had an
underlying hip problem, like many of us, but I'd
rather have found out some other way. Your present
physio sounds as if she's got the right approach.
I am wondering if my surgeon said two 30 minutes per
day 'tinge in cheek' or if being Portuguese he got his20minutes
mixed up with 30 minutes!
Here's to getting back to hitting a golf ball!

I was the other op on the 5th of October if you remember. I havent posted much since my op mostly because my progress is very slow. I am going through this recovery without any pain relief. I only take Tramadol when Its time to sleep as it acts like a sleeping draught. This gives me about 3 hours uninterrupted sleep which is a Godsend. Before my op it was my i ability to take pain relief that worried me the most and my fears have come to fruition. They did try everything again in the hospital bit I was constantly throwing up bile and being light headed .. Wouldnt be too bad if I actually got some relief but my receptors must be messed up as nothing even takes the edge off. I cannot take NSAIDs either.
Sorry if that comes over as a moan, I am trying to l my self as much as anything that that is why my progress is so slow,
There is no way I could manage more than 5 minutes on my two crutches at one time. I can go down and make myself a cup of tea in my flask then walk back to a chair in the lounge. Sitting is very uncomfortable, I bought a higher armchair but this hasnt worked out too well for me, wish I had gone for a recliner now.. But hey hindsight especially 20/20 is useless
on Wednesday last, at 17 days, I decided to try and push myself. So I walked up and down our driveway 3 times, starting at 6:30am. By dinner time I couldnt weight bear on my operated side at all and ended up having to bed rest for 2 days. That was my lowest day, if I am frank, I ended up in tears and actually told my husband I wished I had never had the op. I think its because I had in my mind that I just needed to get throught the first 2 weeks, advice I read on here, and when I found myself still in constant pain and not walking much it all built up and gushed out.
I am still pretty low about how slow things are going, but I am trying to see that as my lowest point and focus on things getting better. There are times when I'll bite my arm off for an hour without pain but it doesnt get me anywhere so that when my focus kicks in again.
Till now I havent arranged any physio, I was waiting until I was a bit more mobile. but I still do the exercises given to me in hospital.
I hope you are both recovering well.
Hugs x

lovley to hear from you as was wondering how you were getting on.
sorry to hear about your pain problems. Its such a shame you havent been able to take the pain killers. I had trouble in hospital with the morphine and was sick but they gave me an anti sickness jab and I was ok after that. I have been taking cocodomal and ibroprofen but just stopped today as 3 weeks on and just feel the pain from scar is going.
I had my first physio on thursday and had a new guy for this hip who i prefer he has just given me one simple exercise involving 3 movements which is easier to remember and hopefully it will strengthen the muscles back up and i wont see him again for 3 weeks. I have been told to use one crutch now but your pain will have held up your recovery but hoping it will get better for you now and you will catch us all up remember the tortoise and the hare! keep going and dont worry we all have our tearful session. I have had plenty too!!! its like going through menopause again my husband says. let us know how you get on.

a positive thing. I thought it was Kikeena on the
same day, and have probably sent her a confusing
post!
I have also found it harder this time, with lots of things
getting me down, even though my surgeon is pleased.
I can't take painkillers, and rely on half of a 1 mg lorenin
to sleep. It is all very emotional, and noone seems to know
how to react to our tears and fears.
have you seen your consultant yet since you left
hospital? What did they say when you had your stitches
out?
from her posts MaggieF seems to be doing well.
I think a lot depends on what state our hips were in
when we had our ops..I think it's been harder for me
because I was bone onbone for a long time.
please write about your daily trials,or triumphs, being
the same day ops I share your journey.

Thanks for the support. No I do not see my surgeon again until 1st December. My wound was glued so I havent seen anyone re stitches. I havent bothered my GP either. I will probably phone at 6 weeks to see if I can ditch the ted stockings. Six weeks is enough imo
Sorry to hear you also cannot take pain relief. Hard isnt it?
I will try and post more often.
take care x

Oh dear ...I am so sorry to hear that ... and how awful that there is nothing that can relief your pain ... how about patches? medicinal marihuana?
what kind of pain is it - can you describe it ?
have you called and talked to your surgeon recently? I so wish I could help you -
Cathy, is this your 2nd THR too - I know Maggie's is ... I am now in my 6th week from 2nd THR and feel as if it is getting a bit more challenging - pains in my and around my knees and upper thighs - I know that this is because I am or try to be more active - sort of forgotten that the old new hip has not healed 100% either and is making over time right now ,,,
Let go of expectations Kristin and try not to compare, okay? do whatever you feel up to - ease in to the day ... it is not easy darling -
warm big hug

What part of the world are you?
how is your relationship with your gp?
did your consultant give you any number
to contact him if you are worried?
Do you feel any stronger physically yet.
we are all up and down, do you feel you are
extra 'up and down?
if in doubt 'shout out'
let us know, sorry I'm firing so many question.

lovely to hear from you too. yes walking with one crutch at the moment since thursday but not sure how far. tends to be round the house or supermarket or shops with my husband. must try and do a special walk soon. my physio gave me exercise to strengthen the muscles and wanted me to concentrate on that first. you sound like you are doing well. keep going too. maggiex

the op. We might have more to recover from.
If you walk up slopes it is harder on the knees.
But in Holland it is mainly flat? I find it's harder
walking on calçada so I keep to asphalt.
Re painkillers and anti inflams, I know I'm not
normal but they don't kill my pain, just upset my
liver enzymes.
so glad to hear from Kristin again, sometimes
people just opt out of the forum.

the aisles! My husband said I was limping, but it might
be my swollen hip side which makes it look like I have an extra
hip. Anyway I have decided to walk more slowly from now on.
I am also trying to resist just one crutch, unless absolutely
necessary i.e. Carrying a cup of tea in the other hand. How
are you coping with your new physio exercises?

and thought I would tell you my comfort position in bed.
One pillow each side, and a small pillow between my knees.
I am now able to sleep on my side as well as my back.

Just laughed at charlie chaplin. I feel like a penguin as I waddle around the kitchen. I am on one crutch outside now I am at six weeks post op.
Must share this with someone - I managed to cut my toenils today. So excited!!!!
As someone else said, it is all small steps back to recovery.

ooh I cant wait to cut my toenails. I remember I couldnt do it until 6 weeks on my last hip. That must be wonderful. My husband is not very keen to do it as worried about cutting me and think I would be nervous too so cant wait for another few weeks. Also to shave my legs too....

My hip will be six weeks old on Thursday.,
It has been well-behaved today. Reckon I might as well hang on to it now.
There have been times this last six weeks when I felt like scrapping it.
