Coping Mechanisms for Anxiety??

Posted , 11 users are following.

I need recommendations for coping with anxiety, such as supplements, dietary habits, drugs and general advice. My anxiety has been getting worse and I am out of control. I've been relying on prescription pills, alcohol and emotional eating which only makes it worse in the long run. I think my anxiety is really brought on by high levels of cortisol and/or sugar imbalance but I cannot seem to get a hang on either. I'm desperate for help right about now.

In all the things you list as doing for anxiety, you don't mention therapy - which is the most likely thing to make a proper change, all the rest are short term if they work at all

I would love to go for CBT or other therapies but I can't afford it and I'm currently on the NHS waiting list for counselling/talking therapy. I also tried meditation/yoga but it was a waste

Psychotherapy is free on the nhs, CBT and counseling is not the same as therapy, meditation and yoga likewise are not even close to the effectiveness of psychotherapy

You need CBT before you have therapy

Because CBT is the calming and mindfulness to control it then therapy,

My wife and mother in law are both psychotherapist's and I've taken there advice.

You cant really rely on things outside of you. You have to rely on you. Sounds scary but its the only way to forge through this. Therapy, eating balanced, meds if needed but not to rely on, yoga and self calming tools and knowledge. Lots of knowledge because many do go thru this and have had it a long time and some have mastered it so they write books and they have workbooks and all kinds of different therapies to teach you what has worked for them and for many. Theres no magic. And sometimes illness can trigger it and the cycle begins. Sometimes a situation can trigger it all well. All you can do is self talk and know at some point it will pass and is always does. But if you start believing drinking or what have you is your answer is are completly on the wrong path to managing anything. I do not have the magical answers or fix i wish i did i would tell you it. It is coming because science is finally working on it but they think will take a decade to figure it out. So in the interim try what i noted and or anything that resinates with you but feels good and can better you as a person.

the best place to start is with a therapist. It really is especially when you cant think clearly to help yourself. You break a bone you go to a doctor right..right now your mind is having issues then you go to a therapist. They can help you make sense out of this.

    Hang in there

I think you should try and cut out on alcohol and rubbish food as it can really affect your anxiety levels! when you say prescription pills, did anyone prescribe you anti depressants or something? pills are ineffective in some cases or effective in the short term providing that you'll be trying to find the root of your anxiety in the meantime! Don't get yourself dependent on all the wrong things! try some breathing techniques, meditation, some exercise (natural serotonin boost),read some books, anything to distract your mind until you get to an appointment with a counsellor! Until then,be patient! Best of luck and keep us updated!

Thank you. I've tried those things but lost motivation. And now I don't know how to get back into living mindfully. I guess I just have to fight for it

Initially talk with your GP and explain your problems.

Some people learn Breathing Exercises, you can get those of the internet, or our GP.

Also you can try Relaxation Techniques, you can get instruction on Mindfulness on Amazon or again your GP

    Make that appointment

All I can suggest is try and explain you would like to try the above to see if they will work. You could ask for some CBT, so they can explain Mindfulness and Breathing Techniques to you as a form of self help.

Are you still taking your medications

Tried replying last night but the moderater took it off. I have been in therapy and it really helps a lot. I also do meditation online with a man from India. He's a doctor but Im not allowed to tell you who it is or my post will be deleted again.Im going for bloodwork to check my cortisol levels and also adrenals. I was just put on librax by my doctor for the stomach pings and pangs that I get. Librax also calms you because it has xanax in it along with an antispasmodic for the stomach. I was told by my doctor that I WILL NOT become addicted to it..

Hi. Yeah, I've noticed they removed other people's comments which were actually very helpful, pretty weird. You're lucky you've found something that works for you. What type of meditation or just any? I'll take a look into Librax. Thanksbiggrin
