Copper coil / IUD insertion review 2015

I feel there is an unfair amount of negative reviews of coil insertions online. I had mine fitted two days ago now, but the week leading to my appointment I was torturing myself by reading every insertion review and account, especially of those childless. So come the fitting, I was extremely nervous and on the verge of changing my mind. Afterwards however, I felt extremely liberated and empowered, and realising there is an unbalance in reviews I thought I'd share my experience for anyone else that is considering the coil and or is very worried - like I certainly was! I know that every body is different and reacts in different ways and that I can not speak for every women.
The facts;
5'2", 21 years old, childless
T-Safe CU 380A QL - model of coil
Insertion two days after period
Took boots own ibuprofen and codeine tablets 1 hour prior
Numbing gel applied by doctor
The thought of pain was my main hold back, so my first question to my doctor was if a local anaesthetic could be an option (no one told me it was before in all my build up appointments). She said I'm more than welcome to one, but she would advise the numbing gel instead, and that the local anaesthetic is always there if I change my mind or becomes too painful.
I think this is extremely important, and that while we are so medically advanced we should not have to subject ourselves to pain if we do not need to.
I took her advice (she has been fitting them for years), and with the comfort of a local anaesthetic being ready to hand and full trust in my doctor, I didn't need it at all - to my surprise!
Now the pain - well, there was none. It was uncomfortable. You're held open, then numbing gel is applied so you're wet and sticky, she then held my cervix, used a long stick looking instrument to measure the length of my cervix, checked how I was coping, then swiftly interested the coil, cut the threads and I was done. Within minutes, and it was definitely only a few seconds when I had anything going up my cervix.
Don't get me wrong, I felt it, but not painfully, and it made my toes curl up, but it wasn't anything I couldn't manage again. I've a small white tattoo on my ribs, and that was much worse. As everyone describes, it's like a period cramp, but it somewhat travels up, so you can almost guess what's happening but not quite.
I just concentrated on my breathing, and told myself if most other women can do it, then so can I. However, I don't know if I would have been just as brave without the painkillers or numbing gel! But girls, you can have that too, and with a local anaesthetic if you wanted!!! - I can't stress this enough.
I was fine to drive myself home afterwards, I was aware of the cramps, like the pressure on your womb you get during a period, and a little light headed (I justified some sweets at this point haha), but again nothing I couldn't manage! I used a pad for the slight bleeding too, and didn't need any more painkillers after the first two.
I couldn't believe how easy it was, and I'm ashamed at how it isn't made abundantly clear to women that pain relief is readily available! Had I known, it wouldn't have taken me two years to pluck up the courage.
I am now hormone free (amazing!!!), free from mood swings, weight gain, spots, the list goes on! And I do not need to worry about contraception for 10 years. 10 years!! I simply check that there are two stings coming out of my cervix now and again. My boyfriend isn't bothered by them in the slightest either. He has only gone looking for them out of pure curiosity! Other than that he cannot feel them, and is just glad that I am hormone free, and happy.
It astounds me that this isn't a more widely used form of contraception. And I think that is mainly down to the idea of the insertion pain, and being squeamish of the T shape left inside. However I would rather that, than pump my body full of invisible chemicals.
I hope this helps someone, and I also hope you're as happy and as liberated as I am with a copper coil. I've already had some girlfriends convert!

Thank You!!!
I agree, having had awful times on depo and pills I was not made aware of this hormone free coil! I have never birthed and was worried it would be awful having it put in. I am so going to book an appointment to get the ball rolling on this! I am on here to find info like yours on the copper coil! So thank you! Out of interest, you've had it a year now, any update on how it's doing??

Hi. So I've had the Nexplanon implant in for almost 3 years. Due to be out this January. I was planning on having it put back in, until I recently got a permanant doctor. She has suggested that I should try and IUD because of the very long periods that I've been having....sometimes a MONTH long. Ugh. I have noticed weight gain, lack of motivation, tiredness. So she suggested Mirena, Skyla or Paraguard. I'm really tired of having periods and of course am not ready for childeren. She suggested Paraguar out of the three for me, but I recall having pretty bad cramps on a normal period cycle before the Nexplanon. I've come to the internet to ready reviews. Boy, that's away to scare anyone. WOW! Nightmare stories over and over again. So now I'm scared, worried and so confused on what I should do. I have talked with 3 girls that I know and each one has Mirena, each one saying they liked it and had no periods at all. My question is....does Mirena have the same hormone as Nexplanon and if it does...won't I have the same sympotons that I already have then? How would the period lessen? I've also heard Paraguard is suppose to go back to your normal cycle bu I've also read that it gets heavier? Ahhhh I'm sooooo lost!

Hi thanks son much for your post. I have just come back from having mine fitted, my experience "was that it?"
37,
no children,
copper neo safe T cu 380
Fitted by GP
She did a pregnancy test first and STD swabs. The swabs were the worst bit!
I took 800mg ibuprofen 45 mins before and cocodomol immediately before I entered the office. The Dr used numbing gel.
I think they were quite surprised I didn't flinch.
I didn't feel any significant cramping or uncomfortable one bit.
Hopefully it continues to go this smoothly!

Hello all!
I'm really happy to have found this thread as I will be going for a third try at insertion near the end of January, and I'm having quite a bit of anxiety about that. I have one child and had the Mirena IUD for five years, absolutely no issues with insertion at my six week checkup. When the five years was up I went to get it taken out and a new one put in, and I had a doctor and student poking around for twenty minutes or so before they decided it wasn't going to happen that day. It was very painful and I was lightheaded for a half hour afterwards, then had cramps for about a week. I was given a new appointment date and a prescription for medication to soften my cervix for the next try, about a month later. Went again, they did an internal ultrasound and discovered I have a tilted uterus (my uterus is tilted towards the back of my body) which makes IUD insertion more difficult. They still couldn't get the IUD in, and again I experienced a decent amount of pain as well as about a week of cramps. At this point I'm feeling pretty hopeless. They told me I would have to be seen by a specialist, who deals with difficult cases and performs surgeries. In the meantime I've been on the progesterone only birth control pill and have been dealing with extreme side effects. I have become depressed, moodier than ever, gained weight, and it has made my skin insanely oily. I'm going to try for Paragard, but I am wondering if anyone in this thread has uterine prolapse (a tilted uterus) or has had to see a specialist for insertion, and what their experience was like. I am extremely nervous and will be devastated if this third try doesn't work out, as hormonal methods have been just awful for me

I had my copper coil fitted yesterday. I was waiting for the appointment for like 4 weeks and like you I did some research.. and some people told me some horror story's =\ so I was very nervous on the day!
So I got there the nurses asked me lots of questions and just informed me of the horror stories that could happen but are very rare.
Then I went into a room with a doctor and nurse had my mum there for moral support! Anyways I had to put my feet together and knees apart.. quiet embarrassing, but this man had delivered thousands of babies and fitted loads of coils so that was some what comforting! I had local, I took ibuprofen before hand, I felt the injection, and when he measured my cervix that did hurt..
When I say hurt I don't mean unbearable pain but it was very uncomfortable which make me think maybe that injection wasn't instant.. my legs started to hurt being that wide so I was really tense which probably didn't help at all. When he put the coil in it just felt like a really dull and instant period pain, and I'm not going to lie that was uncomfortable! And then it was done, I bled for a bit after in a pad, and I spent the whole day in bed taking ibuprofen all day so next time I think I'll be taking stronger pain relief.
Today I woke up and my pain has subsided a lot so back to normality so far! I really would recommend the copper coil purely because it's natural, you still.have periods but no more worrying if you forget a pill etc.
Hope this helps as everyone is different!
I will defo take your advice and take stronger pain medicine haha.
Also I am 26 years old no children, and it was 4 or 5 days after my period!

Finally Went for my copper coil fitting, I was very nervous but the doctor & Nurse were really reassuring and talked me through it all.
The fitting itself went fine, they used some local anaesthetic & it was only a little painful but not unbearable or terrible! If anything it mostly felt a bit strange! The doctor & nurse chatted away to me which was a good distraction & it was all over with very quickly. I was told to let it 'settle in' for week. (They call you back for a check up in six weeks.)
I had a bit of bleeding but no pain afterwards.
I've since had two period cycles, they are not any longer just heavier for two of the days & then it settles as usual. No pain or cramps though.
It is easy to check the strings, best way is to crouch down & check when you're in the shower.
As a person who would like a completely non-hormone contraceptive choice this is option is working well for me.
I have 3 children, & endometriosis (I've had a lot of treatment for endometriosis in the past).
I am very pleased to have finally gone for this option!

If it wasn't for you review I would not have done it, had my copper T inserted yesterday and even though it is not a fun experience but like you said, nothing one can't handle.
Experiencing a little bit of pain and discomfort at the moment but not dying...going to give this 6 months and see how it goes but me and hormones are not friend so hope this works 99.99%.
I first had the injection but that just ruined me completely, I was permenantly bleeding but not heavily just very annoyingly and also had the implant for a year and insantly stopped having my period but that did come back once or twice and very regualar strangely enough but the hormones made me extremely moody and also extra deppressive so exactly a year later I went to my Gynie and asked her to remove it...had enough of that.
Thanks for your review and I will also comment later on about my experiences.

I'm so glad I found this thread!
I've been on hormonal birth control (pills and ring) for a little over a year and I hate it. Nothing has changed much nutrition and excercise wise but I've slowly, but surely, gained weight, specially on my upper body. I have water retention. I now am perpetually constipated. It sucks!
I started on bith control pills and switched to the nuvaring hoping that the lower dose of hormones would have less side effects, but no. Before switching to the nuvaring I had considered the copper IUD but decided against it since my, then, gynecologist said it wasn't recommeded for women who hadn't given birth. But I have been doing research and it seems he's not up to date at all!
So I've decided to get the copper IUD and this thread makes me feel a lot better about it! I'm not really worried about the pain of inserting it, however I am a bit worried about bleeding and heavy periods. But I figure, since everyone is different, I might as well try it and see how it goes. I'll definitely write here about my experience once I get the procedure done.
I have a question: has anyone had the IUD inserted while they were on their period? The gyno who did the procedure on a friend of mine said something like , since your cervix is more dilated during your period insertion might be less painful.

I Have just came across this post and wanted to ask a question . I am really interested in having the copper coil fitted, I've been reading scary stories about it and te one that annoys me the mos is the weight gain some people have went from a size 8 to a 16-18.
Just wanted to know if you have gained any weight after insertion .
Thanks

Hi,
I've had the copper coil about 4 months now, no weight gain! just slightly longer periods which are heavier for a couple of days.
I think weight gain is associated with the mirena coil as that one contains hormone.
I'm glad I finally went for the copper one, hormone free contraception 👍

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was so confused because every review I have read mentioned about people gaining weight. I suppose if there are no hormones I don't understand why some people say they still have gained weight. Surely can always try and if not happy they will hopefully remove it for me .
