Copper coil / IUD insertion review 2015

I feel there is an unfair amount of negative reviews of coil insertions online. I had mine fitted two days ago now, but the week leading to my appointment I was torturing myself by reading every insertion review and account, especially of those childless. So come the fitting, I was extremely nervous and on the verge of changing my mind. Afterwards however, I felt extremely liberated and empowered, and realising there is an unbalance in reviews I thought I'd share my experience for anyone else that is considering the coil and or is very worried - like I certainly was! I know that every body is different and reacts in different ways and that I can not speak for every women.

The facts;

5'2", 21 years old, childless

T-Safe CU 380A QL - model of coil

Insertion two days after period

Took boots own ibuprofen and codeine tablets 1 hour prior

Numbing gel applied by doctor

The thought of pain was my main hold back, so my first question to my doctor was if a local anaesthetic could be an option (no one told me it was before in all my build up appointments). She said I'm more than welcome to one, but she would advise the numbing gel instead, and that the local anaesthetic is always there if I change my mind or becomes too painful.

I think this is extremely important, and that while we are so medically advanced we should not have to subject ourselves to pain if we do not need to.

I took her advice (she has been fitting them for years), and with the comfort of a local anaesthetic being ready to hand and full trust in my doctor, I didn't need it at all - to my surprise!

Now the pain - well, there was none. It was uncomfortable. You're held open, then numbing gel is applied so you're wet and sticky, she then held my cervix, used a long stick looking instrument to measure the length of my cervix, checked how I was coping, then swiftly interested the coil, cut the threads and I was done. Within minutes, and it was definitely only a few seconds when I had anything going up my cervix.

Don't get me wrong, I felt it, but not painfully, and it made my toes curl up, but it wasn't anything I couldn't manage again. I've a small white tattoo on my ribs, and that was much worse. As everyone describes, it's like a period cramp, but it somewhat travels up, so you can almost guess what's happening but not quite.

I just concentrated on my breathing, and told myself if most other women can do it, then so can I. However, I don't know if I would have been just as brave without the painkillers or numbing gel! But girls, you can have that too, and with a local anaesthetic if you wanted!!! - I can't stress this enough.

I was fine to drive myself home afterwards, I was aware of the cramps, like the pressure on your womb you get during a period, and a little light headed (I justified some sweets at this point haha), but again nothing I couldn't manage! I used a pad for the slight bleeding too, and didn't need any more painkillers after the first two.

I couldn't believe how easy it was, and I'm ashamed at how it isn't made abundantly clear to women that pain relief is readily available! Had I known, it wouldn't have taken me two years to pluck up the courage.

I am now hormone free (amazing!!!), free from mood swings, weight gain, spots, the list goes on! And I do not need to worry about contraception for 10 years. 10 years!! I simply check that there are two stings coming out of my cervix now and again. My boyfriend isn't bothered by them in the slightest either. He has only gone looking for them out of pure curiosity! Other than that he cannot feel them, and is just glad that I am hormone free, and happy.

It astounds me that this isn't a more widely used form of contraception. And I think that is mainly down to the idea of the insertion pain, and being squeamish of the T shape left inside. However I would rather that, than pump my body full of invisible chemicals.

I hope this helps someone, and I also hope you're as happy and as liberated as I am with a copper coil. I've already had some girlfriends convert!

    Hi Lillian!

Thank you for your post! It really gives me hope now that I am considring the copper IUD. I recently started taking the pill for the first time in my life. My doctor prescribed me Orsythia, but soon after start taking it I got really bad constant headaches and nausea. I switched to Lo Loestrin Fe, which was significantly better, but the other issue now is that completely kills my libido. I am 23 and that really bothers me, because I cannot get wet. So my question is did you experience any of these when you were taking the pill and did it improve after switching to the IUD?

    Thank you!

    Hey Lillian,

I was reading through the thread of comments and saw that you said you had a slimey kind of discharge after having the coil fitted. I had mine fitted about 6 weeks ago now. I started getting this discharge and was really concerned that I hadn’t some kind of infection as it was not like my usual discharge and had a really strange smell, almost a bit cheese like. I know that sounds gross. I went to the doctors and the swabs came back negative for any infections like bacterial vaginosis which they had warned may occur after insertion because it can upset your natural balance. It went away on it a own but I just had my second period since having the coil and the weird discharge is back again. Do you think it’s just my body adapting to the coil? I might go back to the clinic where I had it fitted and just check everything’s ok. Just wondering if you had reoccurring discharge or whether it was just at first?

This feed isn’t super helpful! Other than the discharge I’ve had no side affects, my periods have been normal, slightly heavier for the first day but they don’t tend to last very long. I have super small hands so I can’t feel the strings myself so I guess I should go and get it checked to make sure it’s still in place as it’s been around 6 weeks now since I got it

Hi samantha! When I got my coil fitted I noticed I was getting a lot wetter during sex, sorry for the tmi but we’re all women here haha I was happy about it though bc I was on the pill and I was so dry.  Every now and then I get a thick discharge but I think it’s normal. I googled it and there are all types of discharges.  https://www.google.es/amp/s/www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/advice/gmp2666/vaginal-discharge[/b]/

Hopefully that helps! Have you tried squatting and feeling for the strings? That might make it easier. I went and got mine checked 6months later bc she said it was low when she put it in but everything’s been ok so far!!

I had my copper coil inserted two days ago now, the week following up to my appointment was horrible I was stressing all the time and just thought I would deal with it on the day. I knew I couldn’t turn back now and I didn’t like the idea of any other contraception so I knees I had to do this because I didn’t want to get pregnant again on the pill. I when I got there I was shaking and so nervous I told the nurse and explained to her that I have had different people tell me different things and I was literally feeling sick. She told me that most people feel a slight cramp and that was it, she never told me step by step what she was going to do or it was going to still at all even though I asked her and she said no. She did a pregnancy test for me just to make sure that I wasn’t pregnant. I laid down on the bed and I was very nervous and she told me she was going to give me an anaesthetic and that probably hurt more than the actual fitting it stung like s**t. The procedure took probably around 5 minuites but took so much longer for me as I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I am going to say now that it does feel like a period cramp at times but most of the time it feels horrendous, I thought labour would feel like that. But I guess it is worth the pain and lay there for 5 minutes and deal with it for it to be there and protect you for 5 years. Now I have had it done I am dreading it getting it took out because I don’t think I can go through the pain again.

I'm 24 and got the copper coil inserted 2 months ago. I had previously been on the pill since I was 18 and decided my body needed a break from hormones. I am in a serious relationship so it seemed the best option for effectiveness and fertility in the future. So before the insertion I got two tablets to put up my vagina to open it up. She measured to see what size would be best suitable and picked the 5 year one . getting it put in was very painful I won't lie but only lasts one minute . afterwards I had really bad cramps for about a week . after getting it done I read a lot of terrible reviews and I'm really glad I didn't read them before hand as it would have totally put me off. I'm due to go back for my checkup and so far so good. The only side effect I've gotten was bad cramping after insertion and my first period . I got strong pain killers to east the pain. I'm hoping the pain will ease over time but its not unbearable as ive always had crampy periods anyways. Ive had some brown discharge but that is normal. My advise would be don't focus too much on people's negative experiences because everyone is different . looking back I'm glad I did it. Its non hormonal with the only side effect being cramps . if you read the pills side effects there a mile long . of course every woman is different but my experience has been positive so I would recommend it to anyone. Hope this helped someone make a decision.

I had to give it up after a year of being fine, suddenly developed constant frightening bleeding! Coil placement was fine, (scan) just for some reason all went wrong. Doc said nothing else they could do except remove as I was becoming dangerously anaemic. Disappointed as it had been great to be hormone free, back to barrier methods 😩😔. Anyone else experience this?
