Coronavirus, let's all talk !

As a COPD patient, the Coronavirus has me very frightened. I'm frightened for myself, my family, as well as my fellow COPD challenged posters. I've started this discussion to provide a new place for information, opinions, comforting words, and common sense.
I'm already very homebound, but will need to shop for my groceries. I have a few face mask, a small supply of hand sanitiser and paper towels. I look to increase these supplies. Also, I hope to stock up on pantry supplies should the virus go crazy in my area.
I look forward to reading all your post on this subject.
All the best, Larry

Venting our feelings/concerns is certainly valid. Bad behavior can't be avoided in some cases and as for others, their behavior will be remembered with the next election.
America and other countries may have not taken this virus as seriously a few months back, but they appear to be working to "cover their a** "now. Not all have yet to put partisan politics aside, but let's hope that they will soon.
I've lived through different flu and virus seasons, but this is new ground for me. 144 countries affected and no effective medicine to treat /fight this virus. The best protection is not to get exposed to this virus. Clean your homes/work areas. Practice social distancing if you must go out in public. Wear a mask/cloth over your nose and mouth. Don't touch your face. Wear rubber gloves if you have them. Wash/sanitise your hands frequently and especially after returning from the grocery store/pharmacy.
I can't make others behave as they should. All I can do is be an example of good behavior for others to see/follow. Let's try to look out for each other as we all face this trying time. Look out for your neighbors/friends and don't assume that they don't need help because they did not ask for help. Some are too proud to ask for help, but would greatly appreciate any help offered. use good common sense, but let's not be cold hearted either.
To those that are feeling down/lonely/depressed, we are here to help support each other. Post your questions, fears, opinions, etc. here. Let's all be safe and good to each other.

The UK is only just now starting to react after dear Boris broadcast that they would kick Covid in three months,if people were just sensible !! he has been made to look the fool that he is and has been forced to act, he is still not being forceful enough but I can't really see a lot of the Brits taking any notice. Even here on strict lock down one woman was caught walking in a town with her child that had the virus; think they got arrested.

In America, reports show people still using the beaches in places like Florida and California. With snow skiing resorts shut down, people are parked on the sides of the roads outside and skiing the mountains anyway.
I don't know what penalties can be served for those breaking the emergency statues. Arrest may be to stern, but something like a parking ticket or jaywalking ticket might be the dish of the day.
Industries here in America are just beginning to pitch in, yet in my opinion the national government could have gotten then in war mood many weeks ago. I hope that they can produce enough to supply America's needs and have the supply surge to help our friends around the world.
Everyone, even if you have been isolated, I say clean your homes and yourselves. Look out for your neighbors. Watch a movie, read a book, cook a great pot of soup, but don't allow this world crisis to keep us from growing as people. Call your family/friends and stay in touch through your phones/internet.
We can get through this together and shame those not doing their part. It's easy to point fingers and place blame, but it's more noble to to be the solid soldier and hold your ground with honor.

Have just finished listening to Boris's instructions. I agree with everyone here: it is all very worrying, and the outcome is unknown for many of us. One question persists in my own mind. Unfortunately the NHS Helpline and 111 services are so busy I can not reach either of them to ask the following -
Is there a means available yet to test for Covid-19 antibodies?
I was extremely ill with the recognised symptoms between 30 January and 21 February. Added to which there was violent vomiting and weakness for 2 - 3 days. The coughing was uncontrollable for a week, and coughing fits continued into the third week. The final fourth week was spent recovering stamina with 3+ mile walks. I was back at work the beginning of March. (I managed to avoid dialling 999, although quite close to doing so several times.)
So we have now been given clear instructions to protect ourselves and, more importantly, to consider the welfare of others. Despite age I need to continue working but would be happier if I do not present a threat to others.

If you are in lockdown you will not be able to work unless you are in one of the key groups Boris's lock down is a carbon copy of ours that has been in force since the 12th. If you did have the virus you should be safe by now, as I believe 5 days after recovery is the time, if worried wear a mask as they are designed to keep your germs in but unfortunately can't keep germs out. If you haven't got any you can always make one out of baking parchement. and elastic bands, you need a stapler too.
I just wonder if the UK public will obey lock down, announced 8.30 this evening, not so sure. Even here in the cities fines are getting a lot higher for any one caught out side without their legal document signed that day so new one on each excursion to the shops, chemist etc. if caught a 2nd time the fine is 1,350€ then 3,700€, a habitual residivist will be then sent to prison for 6 months. So far the fines total 12 million€ and this county is pretty obedient.

You should be tested and you most definitely should stay away from people. Go to some doctor, any doctor, and ask them to test for influenza antibodies. if those aren't found, you may then get tested for COVID-19. I'm not 100% but i think the test is a test for antibodies.
Everybody needs money all around the world. if everybody sick keeps working, the world is screwed. You can show the virus still at 40 days, per the Chinese. Does that mean you could still be shedding it on others? We just do not know.

As far as I know you now cannot just go to a doctor, country is on lock down and no tests are being done at the moment except in key places.

Hi David1942,
As I recall, from seeing the News and Information given out, on TV, they are at a stage in the development of an anti-body test, where it will be purchased in bulk at the point where it is confirmed as being adequate to confirm or deny, if a person has had Covid 19.
Boris spoke of purchasing hundreds of thousands of tests, in order that they could find an antidote, Only when the anti-body test is ready for using on the public. He was hopeful, at that point on TV, that this Test could be developed fairly soon.
It was strange that you should ask that question, and mention your previous symptoms, because I had a similar experience. I was very poorly for a couple of months, had lots of antibiotics and steroids courses, as usual for chest infections, although I was too unwell to visit my doctor, for check-ups, so these were issued without being examined for them. My doctor was unhappy to do that, but could tell how unwell I was on the phone. I had the flu vaccine earlier in 2019, as usual, and when Christmas came I wasn't too good. This continued into the New Year, and throughout January and February. I don't leave the house often, so hardly saw anyone except family. None of them has been ill since, or beforehand. But, I did not consider it to be the flu although I did call it that from the aching and pains I had. The chest infection part was unusual too, I was barking a lot, without the usual settling-down after taking the antibiotics and steroids. I had 5 courses in total, which is why my Doctor was so unhappy.
It would be wrong of me to assume this, but I did purchase a number of items from China on eBay, where the products were supposedly in the UK already. It did involve a lengthy arrival time for some, and others would arrive in 2-3 days, which I put down to the bulk Christmas Postal problems.
The virus might not be able to survive on surfaces for long, yet I was forced to think it, when I became ill. That was before this problem came about, and we were told about it, on TV, so in my own mind I did just wonder if I had caught something from these deliveries. I would be interested, like you, in finding out when the test is available, for checking on anti-bodies to the virus Covid 19. If I do hear more, I will of course, let you know. I haven't heard of anyone else having these kind of symptoms, prior to it becoming common knowledge the virus was in China. At that time, I did say to my family, how the symptoms sounded like those I had experienced. The fever had involved a lot of washing of bedding! I was barely able to leave my bed and so when I did, I couldn't help my husband with changing the bedding. I could not take a shower, either and that made me feel terrible.
My GP had insisted that I have a check-up at the first opportunity when I felt more able to, and on doing that it was discovered my chest was clear. This seemed odd to me, as it doesn't happen very often with COPD.
Another thing which I read recently was about one of the medications I take, for another condition, which has been shown to have a beneficial effect with this virus. I take Hydroxychloroquine daily for this other condition, and that name was mentioned. After reading about it, I did think it could have been that which got me through the previous illness, and out the other side!
However, a lot of what is said here, is only based on what I've heard or read on TV, in the News or the Internet. There is no proof of it, with the medication, and some of what I have written is based on what I can recall from TV. At the same time, my assumptions about the Postal deliveries prior to Christmas is purely a coincidental thought in my own mind.
This area is extremely useful for airing our views, and as such, I do hope you will not feel obliged to think I have all the answers. I do not.
If you do find it possible to get tested for the antibodies, it would be very useful to read how you got on, so please keep us all informed. I, for one, would be interested to know.
In the meantime, I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed for us ALL to steer clear of catching this dreadful virus, and may my wishes be granted in that. Sadly, without the cure, I cannot offer more to anyone, although I do so wish I could.
Quality of Life is an important factor, for us all, rather than quantity. As such, I am hoping everyone can find something to keep them from stewing too deeply on negative things. Lots of Repeat TV programmes are always a good bet, so remember to practice and rehearse those repeats, as who knows, you might be required to do a Quiz!
GOOD LUCK to ALL.

Thank you for your post.
Testing is to identify the sick and to help reduce the Covid-19. As yet no drugs have been certified to prevent or to cure this virus. I'm confident that a maximum effort is taking place to find one or both. Until such a drug is internationally certified, we should be very sceptical of "miracle" cures. Like a bank check, a cure is not real until it is safely in the bank vault.
Now I'd like to address the shameful hoarding of food, paper products, cleaning supplies, etc. Purchasing needed supplies is to be expected, but being selfish greedy pigs is still another. The true nature of our primal survival instinct is on display as you might see before the arrival of a hurricane or snow storm. Yes people want to cut down on the trips to shop, but let's show some restraint. Wholesale distributors in America say they have plenty in their warehouses, but restocking the local stores is it new challenge. Please let's all try to behave with some consideration for others as well.
We must all remember that when this Pandemic is officially ended, many will have much to answer for. Don't be one of these that will need to placed on the naughty list.
Love is always the best policy.

Hi Larry 49o33,
Thank you for hi-lighting some points made on these messages above. Although I did not send some of them, it is always good to have them pointed out.
Here, in the UK, panic-buying has gone beyond a joke, so our hospital and other medical staff have found it very difficult to purchase even the basic essentials. This is grossly unfair, particularly since these are the people who put their lives on the line, to care for those with the Virus, among other things, and daily they will return for more of the same. To find a grocery store has sold out of the very basic products cannot be forgiven under any circumstances. These people might struggle to cope with this emotionally/psychologically but must still consider those who cannot get to the shelves in time. So many of these incidents have occurred now, and I can only see the word Greed staring at me, no other explanation sits comfortably with me.
Regarding the Testing of Patients, we have not got enough evidence to warrant everyone being checked urgently, and this can only happen at a pace suitable to need by medical teams, or when there is a particular doubt. I have no desire to be checked currently, and only would agree when I knew all of the people with the exacting symptoms had been checked first. Otherwise there is no urgency. Just as you have mentioned on both these subjects, we must be fair and giving towards those less fortunate than ourselves.
You have been very kind in your words about these particular subjects, and I have noticed you have a lot more tolerance towards them, than I feel, is in me at this current time.
Thank You once again, for hi-lighting these major points, and what a pity it is not you, who can make these points happen, with the people who abuse them. I would happily support you if you chose to do that as an Ambassador for Good.
With Best Wishes to You,
And, in Avoiding this Horror of all Horrors, Covid.19. I Wish You GOOD LUCK.
GEORGY0.

Hello all.
To start with I live in the USA, but it should not matter as the basic good sense rules to deal with Covid-19 seem to be universal.
Next, if you have survived Covid-19, your body may contain the build up of the naturally produced immune cells that researchers might need. If you want to help, contact a medical professional to find out if your cells could help find a cure.
With COPD I too am fearful. However this morning I donned surgical gloves and braved a trip to my local grocery store. Without hoarding on any items, I selected and purchased enough supplies to last me at least a month and perhaps longer. I was very careful and was aware of those around me. Additionally, I was careful to tough as little as possible. I'm home now and I feel fine, but I do intend to monitor myself for any new unwanted symptoms. Shortness of breath has been a part of my life for years now, but I will be most aware over the next few days. I feel that I should be ok, but only time will tell. I had to go and shop as my megar monthly income can't afford an extra 30 to 40 % to have groceries delivered.
Last, if you can have someone to shop for you or can afford home grocery delivery, then do what's best for you. Remembering your neighbor and picking up a few items for them would show your best character.

Maintaining social contact online is in my humble opinion a very good thing. I for sure don't have all the Covid-19 answers and I've not yet heard anyone that does. Protect yourself/family. Check on your neighbors to ensure they are not in need. Do what you can to not spread this any further.
Express yourselves here if you like, as fellow COPD patients we share similar concerns as getting this virus could be fatal Let's stand together weather its in the UK or America or Australia.
