Culture Report

i had seen my Dr. .3 days ago. She took cultures. I am in such pain today that I called to see if the results were in. The staff member told me all the cultures were negative. I was told to use NYSTATIN ointment. Since it is not a yeast infection or any other infection, can anyone recommend what I can use to stop this terrible soreness and vaginal burning. i am doing sitz baths that help for a few hours. The coconut oil is not helping. THANKS for any advice.

    HI Maryann,

I've been following your discussions on your continued vaginal discomfort. My personal opinion is you are suffering from lack of estrogen in these sensitive tissues and will continue to suffer unless you replenish on the inside and out to get it healed. The Nystatin you are using is a anti fungal cream. I don't see how this is going to help you and if anything is making these delicate tissues even more raw. General Doctors do not know how to treat menopause related issues because they just haven't had the education in it. I would seek a alternative or holistic approach by a doctor that has studied what happens to women and how to treat things. Now that your tests have confirmed there is no infections there, that is reassuring, but now the problem still remains. Your body continues to lack the estrogen that use to keep your tissues healthy. I would personally go to a compounded estriol cream to insert inside at bedtime and another compounded cream called bi-est which is a mixture of estrodial and estriol to rub on the outside. Being you have been suffering so long it may take some time to heal these tissues but if you do get it feeling better it is something you will have to maintain to keep this at bay. If you stop using the creams it will come back because your body is just not going to make the estrogen it needs to keep these tissues healthy. Bio Identical creams under the supervision of a good doctor is safe and effective. I have been on creams for almost three years, post menopause and have now went to the bio identical pellets. Another option for women that really don't want to go the estrogen route is to just get on compounded testosterone cream or pellets. Some women that cannot use estrogen for various reasons have had success with just testosterone. Women need testosterone too. I've been on it along with my estrogen and progesterone. I hope you find help with this. It is no way for a woman to have to live day in and day out in pain. Good luck to you.

      Hi Jude,

I HAD HORMONES TESTED THRU BLOOD WORK A FEW MONTHS AGO. THE TEST RESULTS WERE FINE. IF THIS IS TRUE, WHY WOULD I NEED ESTROGEN? FORGIVE MY IGNORANCE. I AM JUST SO CONFUSED.

      Maryann,

Same reason my husbands doctor said his testosterone was just fine at 299 when the normal range is 300-1100. He was low and it was obvious. Feeling down in the dumps, not wanting to do anything go anywhere, intimate life gone and thinking now that our kids are raised and gone whats left for us in life but the end. This was at 60 yrs old! He is now on testosterone therapy. Playing golf 2-3 times a week. Intimacy is back in our marriage and he is LIVING life again to the fullest. My own general dr was looking at it the same way. These "normal" ranges are normal for some but maybe not others. Some people might feel good at the low end of this spectrum where others don't feel good unless their at the higher end. It is not unusual for a mainstream doctor to tell you all is good, your in the normal range. Obviously, you are having issues and again, my personal opinion only, it is the lack of hormones to these areas causing you this grief. In your profile you have said you have been having a lot of UTI's, this is the same issue. Lack of estrogen is causing thinning in this critical area by the bladder allowing bacteria to cause havoc. I'm not a dr, but have read pretty extensively on the issues for women from lack of our good estrogen.

Hi Maryann Yes unfortunately it is an awful condition without much to look forward to. There isn't much i haven't wasted my money on including coconut oil. The ointment you have been prescribed should really help used 3 times a day to start with ...rub it in thinly and gently everywhere and then twice a day as your symptoms improve. Don't use any soaps or shower gels that are perfumed. In fact i only use hydromol ointment to wash with prescribed by my doctor. Have you been prescribed oestragen ... Vagifem pessaries or cream? The pessaries i started on every night for 2 weeks and then twice a week. There is a moisturiser you can get on prescription in the UK called YES and this helps... they also do a lubrication for intimate times. Diet is important and no smoking for the blood circulation. Good luck ... will answer your questions anytime if i can ...regards Joanne

could be a few things. How old are you? if you entered menopause it could be atrophic vaginitis.

If a sitzbath with baking soda works it could be bacterial vaginosis. That won't show up in a culture because it happens when you have too much of the good bacteria. they produce lactic acid and too much of that makes you burn. Baking soda will neutralize the acid.

If it's not that... than it could be vulvodynia. Do you have a tight pelvic floor? triggerpoint massage of the pelvic floor and the surounding muscles (adducores, obliques etc...) should help the pain.

      Hi Yolanda,

I would like to send you a private message regarding Dr. in NJ. i am using estrogen replacement cream as well as Clobetasol for soreness and burning. I do not see an envelope icon to private message you. Please let me know if you instruct me how to use the private message. THANKS!

i notice Yolanda and I are unable to receive private messages but everyone else seems to have the message envelope underneath their names. Does anyone know why this is?

julie, you have the envelope now. I think the moderator explained why it sometimes doesn't appear, but who can remember? Technology is beyond me. Go to an old message of yolanda's and I am sure you will find one with an envelope.

maryanne, I do think what jude has to say is probably correct re the need for hormones, but I don't know your history re any reasons you may have to avoid them. Obviously you would have to get a doctor to prescribe those hormones.

However, I want to mention to you that a poster named Shirley was suffering terribly with UTIs and seemed at her wits end. She was finally given Trimethoprim (sp?) for bladder infections and to my knowledge the problem stopped. I haven't seen another post from her. She told me she posted the info re the med as a separate post, but there are so many I didn't see it and don't follow UTI issues specifically.

Maybe you can look up the med and/or Shirley's post.

    Good luck.
