Culture Report

i had seen my Dr. .3 days ago. She took cultures. I am in such pain today that I called to see if the results were in. The staff member told me all the cultures were negative. I was told to use NYSTATIN ointment. Since it is not a yeast infection or any other infection, can anyone recommend what I can use to stop this terrible soreness and vaginal burning. i am doing sitz baths that help for a few hours. The coconut oil is not helping. THANKS for any advice.

I'm sorry Maryann ...I use TIMODINE OINTMENT for vaginal atrophy. I find this really helps.I presumed you had vaginal atrophy. Obviously you will need some sort of oestragen if this is the case.

Hi Maryann,
I find Aquaphor ointment to be good. I use this after I go to the bathroom.

I use tea tree oil - I use it for a number of things and gave it a try as at that point (few years ago) it would'nt have made it much worse. That along with Ovestin x3 times a week works for me. i'm in the UK so get it on prescription. i always use white cotton underwear and wash them separately using hot water only, i never use soap or any other wash just hot water and i always shower never a bath. its all trial and error unfortunately as what works for one person wont for another.

So sorry to hear this. Since it isn't bacterial or yeast and to deaden the pain and burning, I use Lidocaine. I buy it at Walmart. Lidocaine 4%. And I got the idea when I went for my Mona Lisa Touch and he used Lidocaine before the procedure so I thought well, if a doctor can use lidocaine on "Old Lucy" my vag, to deaden the pain, why can't I?
Just a thought. Also an ice pack can help for temporary relief.

THANKS LINDA. I PURCHASED A TUBE OF ALOCAINE IN WALGREENS. IT HAS LIDOCAINE AND ALOE VERA. I AM HOPING IT WILL GIVE ME SOME RELIEF.

For those of you who use Lidocaine or Alocaine, are you using this internallly? I thought that was for external use only? All of my burning is internal.

Hi Julie,
I think it is just to be used on the outside. I wish there was something to use on the inside for the incessant burning.

maryanne, do be careful with tea tree oil. Clearly some women are helped by it. I ordered an essential oil combination for LS that contained it, though apprehensive (as was my gyn when she read that it contained tea tree oil). I could not stand the burning from it. My AV and LS cause no burning.

Thats what i thought so it wont help with the non stop internal burn. its been so bad that I've been tempted to try small ice chips but i fear that would set off my nerves even more. I refuse to give up though. i have to believe there is something i will be able to use that will help...even if just a little.

ive never had a problem with tea tree. i use it everyday inside and out and it stops the burning straight away. Each to their own i suppose.

and to be honest i would rather use tea tree than a cream made with pregnant mare urine aka PERMARIN

As I said, some women find it effective. I could not tolerate the burning it caused. I don't have burning as a symptom.

Hi Beverly,
Did you use a carrier oil for your tea tree oil? Just putting it on can be harsh. Put some olive oil in a container and add a few drops of tea tree into it then apply can make the tea tree less harsh on the skin.

jude, It was an ingredient in a mixture called restore which was made up by a woman with LS who claims it has put hers in remission (or whatever terms she uses). I learned about it here, read what the owner said on the web site, saw that tea tree oil was an ingredient and wondered how wise it would be to use it on such sensitive skin. Ran it by my gyn who checked the ingredients and the TTO also gave her pause. I chose to assume it would be diluted enough, tried it for several days, but I just could not deal with the burning. It was even causing the skin to shrivel somewhat. Also I found the smell overwhelming. Obviously it works for some, but not for me.
She carries a weaker product for minor cuts, etc which is less expensive, but she felt was not strong enough to affect LS (I asked her). Personally, I would not encourage anyone to invest any money in a product that contains it if you can't try a sample first.
I was hoping to avoid using steroids, if possible, but that was a blind alley for me. Between the estradiol & the steroid I seem to be (as my gyn says) "coming along fine".
I wonder if there is a difference in severity of symptoms in those who get LS before menopause and those who get it after.
