Cyclizine - Very Dangerous Side Effects

Posted , 33 users are following.

I was taken into hospital with severely painful kidneys, and given morphine as pain relief. Unfortunately this gave me terrible nausea so I was given Cyclizine via IV. Within 10 seconds I went into anaphalactic shock and couldn't breath unassisted. I had to be given adrenalin and was on oxygen for a considerable time. For the next two days I couldn't urinate and had to be catheturised. It was a frightening and stressful experience. The attending doctor told me that it was unheard of for anyone to be allergic to this drug, and that my inability to pee was not connected. I am still trying to recover. More research needs to be done. I believe this drug is dangerous.

I suspect you take it in tablet form which does not cause adverse affects. The issues are when it is given introveniously under five minutes, I have spoken to many doctors and the drug supplyer and they pretty much all agree that this can be very dangerous althouth the drug company will not document this.Amdipharm have changed the report from one pacient from denying it had an effect to probably causing the pacient paralassis causing the loss of use in the pacients legs for up to six months. This drug is dangerous and nurses are not trained in how to administer it, infact in my experiance of research, every nurse that administered it had no idea that it had to be administered over five minuites until it was to late.

Gosh Angry, it seems that several of us have had Cyclizine administered

by uninformed Nurses in under 5 mins, for me personally it was around

eight seconds. This was yesterday. I thought I was going to die. The

hospital doctor seemed not overly concerned and called it an intolerance

rather than allergic reaction. I wish I had declined the drug.

Yes, same old story, the Doctor does not want to say that they are in the wrong and that the staff are not trained in this procedure so they have to make something up. If you ask for it to be investergated, they will write you a nice statment where the nurse says she did it over five minutes once she has been called in and told to do so... I personally was even warned off for trying to speak to a nurse who did this after a bad event who then misteriously got sacked a couple of days later which somehow removers her from being able to be accountable/investergateed further. Its not the nurses fault, its a dangerous drug and the Doctors/hospitals are not educating the nurses. I was given word from Amdipharm that the bottles would now contain a label stating the dangers however I don't think this has happened so more people will suffer.

This is shocking. Same thing happened to me with the nurse I honestly thought I was dying. I was one coma watch for 48 hrs, my friend who is a nurse says it is a miracle I'm still here. There are too many of us on here who have suffered. Surely we could make a petition to Amdipharm? I'm still having problems with my speech and spasms in my leg 5 years on.

I too have experienced life threatening side effects from this drug.   I was hospitalised with a mystery virus and was constantly vomiting so was administered cyclizine via IV while I was being assessed in A&E.  At the time there seemed to be no adverse reaction but the following night I had another bout of constant vomiting and was again administered cyclizine via IV.  Within 30 seconds I had horrendous pain in all my joints and lower back together with violent shaking and my heart and head felt as if they were going to explode.  Then my throat went into spasms and I couldn't breathe.  I managed to press the emergency button and the nurse came rushing in and I gasped to her that I couldn't breathe and that it must have been the injection.  Her reaction was appalling...instead of getting me immediate help she abruptly told me that it couldn't be as I had been fine on it when I was admitted.  She put me on oxygen and a saline drip and said she would get the on call doctor to come and see me...he never did so I assume she never called him.  Thankfully my breathing returned to normal and the pain and violent shaking eased off.  However the next day I overheard the nurses discussing my case and they said that I must have taken something myself that had caused the reaction! During the rest of my stay the nurses only spoke to me when they had to...I put in a complaint but never received an apology.

My daughter had flue and nausea, she was given cyclizine for nausea. Just after 30 minutes of administering the medication she started jerking . The doctor told us it was the side effects of cyclizine but the Neurologist denied it after admitting her for 4 days. She did MRI scan and EEG scan but nothng was found. It has been 3 yrs now since we've been battling with her condition. When she is too stressed, she can't control her enxiety and have seizures, sometimes she becomes paralysed for days. We have been seeing different Psychologist and Psychriatist, but they can't seem to control her enxiety levels which leads to seizures. I also wish something can be done with this drug because it has ruin our lives big time.

Another nice cover up pretending they have no idea what happened and putting it down to an alergic reaction. The facts are, you would of been given Cyclizine by IV quickly (it should be administered over five minuites) this causes this reaction. The nurses are not trained no know the dangers of Cyclizine and due to the hospital not wanting to get in trouble, they go down this route treating people as if they are stupid. To prove my point, ask them to write down how it was administered to you and they will write slowly overfive minutes, although you know this was not the case. This again proves they know they made a mistake. Amdipharm make this drug and also cover up all the bad reactions to make sure they do not get logged as it is bad for buisness. To prove my point, look through this forum alone to see the amount of reported cases that would of been logged and yet officially there are only seven cases, one of those cases took me two years to get logged and had to go to goverment to make it so. MHRA did nothing, investergated and audited the company but did nothing. Yellow crd scheme never gets there, they all get dropped on a technicality of the pacient could of had an underling unknown issue. Its all money and polatics.

Everyone gives up the fight with the PAWS, Ombudsman, Amdipharm after the first two years of fighting which is a shame as strength in numbers and all that.

Not sure if you guys who replied recently saw my comment in this discussion last July (2017):

This is really interesting reading all these posts! I has cyclizine via IV today and my heart rate went up immediately, i felt totally out of it and my pupils and eyes were large, i couldnt use my legs and i found it hard to speak, its like i couldnt get my words out, my HR went up 200 and then i struggled to breath and my chest was so tight, i honestly thought that was it. It was thee most horrendous experience of my life. Reminded me of when i was in my 20s when i dabbled and it was like i was tripping. It did wear off after about 2 hours but its left me quite traumatised tbh. x

Since the above experience, ive had these weird anxiety episodes that have not been like anything ive previously had. Thos drug is clearly being used incorrectly across the NHS. I spoke to a psychiatrist recently and she said these type of side effects are common and it should be administered carefully but that IV 50mg shouldnt really be given at all like that - i was just having mild nausea so they shoudl have given tablets at a much lower dose. x

Hi all, I was pregnant and couldn't stop being sick so went to hospital and they gave me cyclizine through iv and my god with in a matter of seconds I could tell something was wrong I felt so high it was horrible and them my heart rate started to go crazy! I was already had heart rate monitor on and my heart spiked up to 160 the nurse became so worried he kept whispering to the other nurse about me being tachycardic I actually thought I was going to die. If anyone else is ever offered this drug say no there are much more safer anti nausea meds out there this one is so dangerous.
