Day 49 and Counting

I'm a 57 yr. Old female who had never broken any body part in her life. I was attempting to get into my sisters truck as I've done a thousand times. One minute I was up, the next minute I was laying on the ground in excruciating pain. I heard the crack as I was going down. Arrived at the hospital was given a CAT scan because I had hit my head twice and an ankle x-ray. Emergency room orthopedic doc came in said I had broker my ankle in two places and I'd be down six to eight weeks. Was almost hysterical until they have me something morphine in my drip. Fronds see my foot-, it was all laying on the right. Pressure was 134/108. Had to wait for me to calm down to put the splint on. Had to set my foot using his hands as I refused the needle. Stayed in the hospital two days-was sent home. I was scared to death. Thanks God my children are grown and we live together. Scared to do anything. Splint came off in two weeks on 2/5, had surgery on 2/13, went into boot, keep it on 24/7, went to post-op on 2/26, doc said healing nicely but still keep boot on still non-weight bearing. Praying that on 3/26 I can start putting some weight on foot. I wanna go back to work but I really just want to stand and walk!!!??

What bad luck! I'm glad that you have family with you to help. I had my ankle broken in three places a year and a half ago. Hang in there! Good luck with full healing.

Thank you Yvonne for your best wishes. This journey is unlike any I've been on in my life (and trust me I've been on some doozies!!!)

    Beatrice,

My condolences on your traumatic accident. It sounds like you had rough going for a while. I also hope there was no concussion from your head trauma.

You came to the right place for information and reassurance. Many of us have had been through a lot too with ankle injuries.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thank you kpower. This is most taxing on my spirit. I had a slight concussion so was kept overnight for observation. Never in my wildest dreams would I have placed myself here in this place. Truly mind boggling.

So so sorry Beatrice... sounds like a horrid accident.  I think we all take for granted our walking.  Work for me has been out for over a year. I'm in retail management and there is no way I can stand that long on my feet.

You'll get there! Keep doing what your doing and I hope your recovery goes a bit more quickly!

Thank you Rose. I'm going to have to rethink work as I work with children in wheelchairs. I fear if I'm not able to walk good enough soon I won't be able to do that.

Beatrice, I am 73 years old and have never been off my feet.   I have major arthritis in my subtalar joint and have to have 3 fusions.   I’ve been in a boot for 6 months because it hurts so bad.   I am concerned because the recovery time is so long.  I cannot imagine laying around every day for 2 months.   Also I have been practicing with crutches but it is not going well.   I did get a knee scooter that works very well but it needs lots of space.

So as I read your story I thought what bad luck you didn’t get a chance to,prepare for your surgery.   It’s a big thing and I’m sure lots  people were counting on you.    It’s kinda like you drop out of your life for 3 months.

Thanks Kathy I really do feel like I have fallen out of my life for three months. You are absolutely right: I didn't get to prepare for this. Totally turned my world upside down. I'm now thinking I'm going to have to rethink my job duties as I work with children in wheelchairs. I refused the crutches because I've fallen on them before. I don't have enough space for a scooter or wide wheelchair. ?I pray the best for you.

Hi everybody it's Beatrice. Thank you for the replies-it really helps to know that I am not alone. I just remembered a few points. The initial injury happened on 1/26. I was given the plaster cast/splint. On 2/5 I had the boot until the surgery on 2/15. after surgery went back in boot total non-weight bearing still. The bedpan I use is right next to the bed. Yes I use a bed pan never got the potty chair. Was so hoping that I would be able to make it up my stairs to the bathroom. That hasn't happened yet because I explained to the doctor that my shower is two floors up and I just couldn't make it that far. I haven't tried to bump up the steps yet. I have these 3 little steps to conquer first. I'm feeling a little more motivated this week. Oh yes, the concussion was a slight one that's why I had to stay in the hospital for observation. Best wishes to all!

Hi everybody-it's Beatrice. It's day 61 and I have a praise and progress reportcheesygrin?. Went to the doctor on yesterday and nothing but good news. Everything is healing as it should be( that awful 60 days of solitary confinement paid off) and I'm currently full weight bearing with the boot as needed for the next two weeks and have been cleared to go back to work on April the 9th woo! woo! Now the hard part: not to over do it and put myself back at square one cry?. My mind, however, is in one place and my body isn't getting all the signals or even responding. I also have three PT sessions scheduled. However, I now think I know why my left leg isn't responding as it should-this was my "bad" leg prior to this incident and I really relied on my right leg for everything. So I'm praying that while I'm in PT they can help me with that. My doctor is/was fantastic who listened and answered all my questionslol?.I was given home exercises that I'll start today and gradually build up to a full session. My pain level is like not an issue but I feel some discomfort on the ankle. I feel like singing "no more elevation, no more sore butttt.....lol'. Still gonna take my time and wishing everyone all the best. If someone would be so kind to let me know what to expect now I would greatly appreciate it! Blessings always!
