Depressed and stressed

Posted , 13 users are following.

I broke my ankle 19/08/16 had surgery on 20/08/16 then I had to give birth to my son 24/08/16.

It was 3 weeks yesterday since my op and I've been so down because I haven't been able to walk and obviously with a newborn it's been really stressful.

Doc originally said two weeks non weight bearing then hopefully a boot. I have a follow up tomorrow so I just want to know if it's likely il get a boot?

I just feel like I'm never going to get better and missing out on so much with my newborn and my eldest starts her new school and I need to go back to work 😰

Your story is one of the toughest I've heard.  The ankle is tough enough without having to give birth and have a newborn.  Being depressed would be totally normal.  You will get past this and get back to normal.  This is temporary and you have done the hardest part.  Blessings to you and your family.

    Hi Mandy,

Your situation seems similar to mine. I slipped while cleaning the kitchen and I fell in about two seconds. Rushed to the hospital. Have had three surgeries in four months. I found this forum for support. I'm a single mom, with a child starting high school. I have been homebound and depressed.

Now you have a newborn. That is tough. In four months I have lost a lot of weight and the depression started to set in. Not being mobile has been a real challenge. The constant pain and discomfort has been terrible.

I feel terrible for you since that is a very difficult situation that you are in. However, things will begin to improve! From research, anything related to the ankle or feet is delicate since we have the nerve endings there. The lifesaver for me has been putting gel packs in the freezer ( two portions water and one portion rubbing alcohol) and elevating my foot in Ziploc bags double bag them. Wrap a towel so they don't slip. If you have cheap shampoo or dishwashing detergent they work just as well.

I wish you all the best! I do have an air cast boot and a cane. Which do help substantially. But the burning sensations and pins and needles are constant.

Let me know if you need any more tips on anything. Yours truly, Monika

Thanks for all your replies 😀

Well I didn't get a boot today surgeon said that I broke it badly and that I need to be non weight baring for another three weeks 😰 It's sinking in now and I've done 3 weeks already so need to look forward to another 3 weeks.

They changed my cast today so at least I've got a pink one now!

    Roll on 3 weeks!

I feel for you having the break and a newborn! I broke my tibia & Fibula and screws and plates. 6 weeks non weight bearing ( only a bandage). Gradually weaned off the crutches over 3 weeks. Walking now but slow and painful. i need more physio for range of movement.

I strayed on anti imflammatories too long and got an ulcer and a bad internal bleed so have been in and out of emergency / hospital with transfusions of blood + iron.. + now have the flu.. Hence I think my rehab is a little behind where it should be.

4 months and 1 week mark now - I can cycle 20kms + kayak but walking slow..mostly the rest of my foot rather than the break area. The ankle has been given the ok go hard verdict from the specialist.

It sounds like breaks vary a lot in their severity- I'm surprised to hear people walking at 3 weeks!

Ps - I have  slowly walked 6kms on it though...I broke it bushwalking and was very fit before it happened..hard to handle being overtaken by people in their 70's! ( I'm 56..lol's)

Yes I shouldn't say that.. I GPS speedwindsurf with some 73 year olds and I can't catch the buggers! Likewise there are plenty of people in the bushwalking club who are into harder walks than I used to be able to do..

Just trying to get the impression across...( don't let the truth get in the way of a good story..lol's)
