Did anyone improve on thyroxine?

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone went on thyroxine to find the lichen sclerosis improved. I know that low iodine, selenium etc can cause hypothyroidism but some of us have unidentified thyroid problems that aren't related to iodine deficiency. eek

Hi Lula I  had never made the connection before but I had my thyroid removed last winter and I am now on thyroxin and that must be about the time the itch had

stopped !   Still can't say if that was the problem all along but it does make for

an interesting thought.  Another slip up by our medical people

Thanks for your helpful reply Sheila,

If it makes you feel better my great aunt had her thyroid removed at 40 and is still going at 95. She had lots of energy and got a lot done even in old age. My relatives on one side have lupus but I am not sure how that lead to their thyroids being removed as they won't discuss their health. No question there are some genetics involved there. smile

    h!i lula

thanks for this! i'm generally imbalanced at the mo hormone wise and have a low thyroid. my body has reached its saturation point with chemicals and junk and i'm just working thro everything. i got my TSH down to 2.5 i think it was with thyroxin but had addressed my main symptoms of LS by going gluten free....all these intolerances and so on however tell me to pay attention to detoxing (on one at the mo) and to working to lower my heavy metal load  too which has whacked my thyroid .....makes me tired just thinking about the mess i'm in !!

How are you? sounds like you're going great !! are you symptom free now?

      Hi Marey

Sounds like you have very similar things going on to me. My skin is worse affected by dairy but my guts don't handle much wheat. My immunologist explained to me that the immune system itself is partly responsible for recognising and dealing with toxins. If immunity is weak the body can't handle them nearly as well. Selenium and iodine are really good for getting metals out but they are toxic if too much is taken. They are also thyroid nutrients. I am much better on itrazole because I think the LS was triggered by a fungus. The itching I had all the time is gone. The LS is only active when the skin is irritated like a koebner thing. As far as I know, I am still missing parts of my immune system. I wonder how much of that is tied up with an underactive pituitary gland but I can't get that tested here. smile

absolutely agreed ...max 400 mg of selenium per day can be got from a couple of brazil nuts...which is a great blessing. the iodine thing i'm just reading about ...don't know if i have hashis but seems best to keep away from iodine whilst there is any inflammation and raised antibodies....whereafter once the inflam has settled and the antibody numbers dropped its then ok to re-introduce very small amounts of iodine orally...til higher levels are tolerated. i had been putting iodine on my skin to limit absorption...but will try this...once TSH is down again.

due for antibody and iodine testing soon hopefully.

what parts of your immune sys are missing and is your TSH high that you think your pit gland is underactive?

at mo my TSH is 5.1 ....so am going back onto thyroxin which had reduced the level to 2.1 previously...and will try again to get this right. makes sense that the lowered TSH also helps with LS inflam and itch.

really good to talk to you x

Hi Marey, yes you are right, too much iodine can actually supress the thyroid.

I think my pituitary function is low because all of my hormones are at the low end including the stimulating hormones from the pituitary. I had problems with growth but it could be the CVID that stunted my growth.

I should mention the upper limit for selenium is about 400 micrograms, milligrams would knock out a herd of horses. I know of people who have made themselves very sick with too much selenium. I personally wouldn't want to go over 200 micrograms a day. 2 Brazil nuts depending on size would probably be under 200mcg. Not having enough is almost as bad though. NZ has a very high cancer rate related to selenium deficiency because the soil is very low in minerals. I believe something like 1 in 2 people get it here. Iodine deficiency is also common as people avoid salt. I became iodine deficient when I stopped using iodised salt and replaced it with kelp salt. Turns out that kelp salt had way less iodine than claimed on packet.

Great to chat to you also Marey X

      Brain fog!

Wow Marey a TSH of 5.1 is very high it should ideally be under 1.5 or nearer to 1 to be pretty symptom free.

      absolutely it is!!

Did get it down to 1.5 I think it was...but been experimenting. You know that ireesistible temptation!! Well back on the thyroxin ...heading for the lower numbers. Thanks for being there kellie! I notice you too x

    Lula,

I have a thyroid condition long before LS.  Has been treated for many years with some form of thyroxin.  Not till my adrenals were treated as well did my body restore to 'normal'.  Somewhere in between I think the LS started, but offcial detection of LS is only since a year and a half.

A bit like the chicken and the egg kind of thing.

Thanks Hanny, do you think the adrenal problems were related to stress?

How did you fix them? I had a problem with low cortisol myself but that improved a bit with my thyroid when I took iodine. I still fall in the low range of normal but I can get out of bed and move. I was sleeping all the time when it was only moderately out of range. I think the reference ranges are too low.

Not sure Lula, whether the adreanal problems were related to stress.  I think I was actually born with this problem since I was unable to handle stress at a young age already.  However, what showed around age 35 that my thyroid was overactive.  At the time they considered RAI (Radio Active Iodine) treatment the best solution.  And what did I know.  It changed the thyroid from being active to underactive and had to take medication.  Much later, I think about 4 years ago, it was discovered that the adrenal weren't functioning well.  The reason why the thyroid never really was balanced with the medication.  About 6 years ago I switched to dessicated thyroid meds, which already started to make a big differenc. After the Adrenal glands were balanced with the thyroid I finally could live like a normal human being.  That only some four years ago.  I'm 64 now.

Stress was something I never could handle.  My immunity wasn't worth anything either.  Every flue bug,  all the time earinfections,  I was in my bed a lot.  Was doing so well, I thought.  Then came the new kid on the block - LS.

Forgot to mention: Adrenals are supported with Isocord and a bundle of vitamins:  B's, C, D

Hope I have answered all you were asking.

Thanks Hanny, you have. Great that you are keeping the nutrients up. I am not very good at remembering-but that is a low thyroid sign smile
